[Algorithms for diagnosis and therapy of sleep disorders in general practice].
Complaints of insomnia, i.e. problems to fall asleep or maintain asleep and/or non-restorative sleep are very common in general practice. This article presents the clinical algorithm non-restorative sleep which was devised by the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine. [Sleep disturbances in Parkinson's disease].
Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system. Degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons is the main cause of the disease. The basic symptoms of Parkinson's disease are bradykinesia, rigidity and resting tremor. Disturbances of the autonomous nervous system, depression, dementia and sleep disorders are common, too. People with Parkinson's disease suffer from insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, "sleep attacks", nightmares, REM sleep behaviour disorder, periodic limb movement in sleep, restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea syndrome. The main cause of sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease are age-connected changes in sleep architecture, disturbances of neurotransmission, movement disturbances in sleep, medications and concomitant diseases. The authors present the current state of knowledge on sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease, especially, the role of dopaminergic therapy, methods of diagnostics and treatment as well as the influence of sleep disturbances on patient's quality of life.

Sleep disorders and depression with atypical features: response to valproate.
Symptoms of so-called atypical depression, such as hypersomnia and lethargy, may accompany specific sleep disorders. It is often difficult to determine which disorder is "primary". The authors examine three cases of depression with atypical features associated with specific sleep disorders and report a favorable response to valproate. Some clinical features of the cases suggest a primary sleep disorder with secondary affective symptoms. However, valproate may have direct mood-altering effects as well as effects on sleep physiology. The implications of these findings for diagnosis and treatment are discussed.
Non-rapid-eye-movement parasomnia with behavior disorder.
I have presented a case of NREM parasomnia with violent aggression against another person. Treatment with clonazepam failed, but imipramine therapy was successful.
Movement disorders during sleep in cats and dogs.
Spontaneous sleep movement disorders in 5 cats and 3 dogs were studied. Objective abnormalities during sleep were confirmed by electrographic or behavioral monitoring techniques in all animals. The cause of the disorder was CNS disease in 3 animals. A cause was not discovered in the other 5 animals, although at necropsy, 2 were found to have thyroid tumors. Many pharmacologic treatments were ineffectual, but trials with the benzodiazepine tranquilizer, clonazepam, suggested it will prove useful in controlling violent movements during rapid-eye-movement sleep.
