Informative signs for classification of disorders of consciousness were distinguished on the basis of clinico-physiological comparisons. Coma is characterized by failure of attempts to wake the patient, deep coma by muscular atonia, and protective inhibition coma by bilateral mydriasis. Opening of the eyes in response to a sound or pain is characteristic for the apallic syndrome, carrying out of instructions for deep stunning, answering questions for stunning. Clear consciousness is characterized by the patient's ability to orientate. Protective inhibition coma is always characterized by coarse changes of short latent evoked potentials in response to acoustic stimulation.
In order to elucidate the nature of intestinal flora affecting the immunological and physiological parameters of the intestine, we produced several kinds of ex-germfree mice associated with fecal organisms and their chloroform-resistant variants derived from mice, rats, and humans. The phenotypes of intraepithelial lymphocytes were changed to those in conventional mice, particularly the increased positive percentage of alpha beta T-cell-receptor and Thy-1-bearing T cells, on association of the microorganisms (MF) and their chloroform resistant variants (MChl) derived from mice, but not rats and humans, with germfree mice. The cytolytic activity of intraepithelial lymphocytes was expressed only in the MF and MChl groups. The induction of the synthesis of fucosyl asialo GM1 glycolipid, the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II molecule, an increase in the mitotic indices of colonic epithelial cells, and a decrease in lactase activity of the small intestinal epithelial cells also occurred only in the two groups. On the other hand, the cecal size (cecal weight/body weight ratio) was reduced in the mice of all groups examined here, there being approximately the same amount and composition of organic acids, such as acetic acid, butyric acid, and propionic acid, in the cecal contents. Taken together, the results suggest that mouse-specific and chloroform-resistant microorganisms, which are difficult to cultivate at present, may contribute to alteration of the immunological and epithelial characteristics of the mouse intestine. Another factor derived from the intestinal flora, for example, bacterial metabolites such as organic acids, may also affect the cecal size.
This study is an attempt to detect the most important modifications of physiological parameters occurring during pressure immobility in rabbits and to compare them with those recorded during animal hypnosis. Like the latter, pressure immobility is characterized by the development of high voltage slow waves in the EEG, reduction in frequency and amount of rhythmic slow activity in the hippocampus (RSA) and depression of spinal polysynaptic reflexes. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures are not modified. Duration of two types of immobility is positively correlated within individuals. Treatment by a single dose of morphine (1 mg/kg) potentiates the duration and this effect is antagonized by naloxone (1 mg/kg). Repeated morphine injection up to tolerance reduces duration. Pressure immobility may also be produced under persistent nociceptive stimulation and is characterized by the development of high voltage slow waves in the EEG, as is typical in the absence of pain. Naloxone, (5 mg/kg) injected in a condition of persistent noxious stimulation, reduces immobility duration. In contrast to animal hypnosis, the duration of pressure immobility is neither potentiated by pain nor reduced by naloxone (1,5 or 20 mg/kg). It is suggested that the two immobilities are controlled by several mechanisms, some similar, some different.
OBJECTIVE: Through a comparison between F1 and its' parents on the growth, chemical components and physiology, this study aims to find the possibility of selecting new dendrobium hybrids with high yield and good quality. METHOD: To determinate the growth, chemical components, photosynthesis, hormones and isoenzyme in the plants. RESULT: Photosynthetic area, content of chlorophyll, net photosynthesis and yield of F1 generation are higher than those of the parents; chla/b rate is lower; growth is almost the same as in Dendrobium moniliforme; content of chemical components are the same as in D. huoshanense. F1 is approaching of advantages of parents. CONCLUSION: Physiological characters, yield and quality of F1 are greatly improved by hybridization.
The author reviews some literature data available on discovery, morphology and physiology of the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) with special emphasis on the morphology of specific ANF granules, mechanisms of secretion and deposition in cardiomyocytes. The granules formation during embryogenesis, ANF structure and physiologic effect on the kidney, smooth muscles, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system are analysed. Molecular mechanisms of ANF action are suggested. Current knowledge about ANF system significance in the genesis of some disorders, arterial hypertension in particular, is evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: The steady-state somatosensory evoked potentials (S-SEPs) to vibratory stimulation were recorded to characterize their physiological properties. METHODS: Vibratory stimuli were applied to the right palmar surface in 10 normal subjects. A total of 200 responses were recorded from electrodes at 2 cm posterior to C3, Cz and C4 and 2 cm anterior to C3. All responses were Fourier analyzed and the amplitudes of the first (1F) and second (2F) harmonic components were thus obtained. The effects of modulation frequency (5-30 Hz) and stimulus intensity (0.001-0.1 Newton (N)) on S-SEPs were studied. RESULTS: The amplitudes of 1F and 2F were greatest at the electrode 2 cm posterior to C3, 1F being predominant. The mean 1F amplitudes as a function of modulation frequency showed a bimodal distribution with a trough at 14 Hz and a peak at 21 Hz. The mean 1F amplitudes showed a linear increase of up to 0.05 N and thereafter reached a plateau against the logarithmic stimulus intensity axis. CONCLUSION: Vibratory S-SEPs may originate from the primary somatosensory cortex and provide information on the fast-adapting mechanoreceptive afferents. The temporal resonance at 21 Hz places the somatosensory system between the visual and auditory systems.
In this study, the formation of the corticotectal projection of the rat in organotypic slice culture was investigated, using both anatomical and physiological approaches. The establishment of fibre connections from visual cortex to superior colliculus explants was monitored after 3, 6, 14, 20 and 30 days in vitro by cortical injections of Dil. As in cortical cultures without cocultured colliculus, fibres anterogradely labelled by this procedure spread radially from the injection site into the surroundings of the explant, without displaying any directional preference. Especially, layer V pyramidal cells could be seen to extend processes not only to the collicular target, but also in the opposite direction, suggesting that no axonal guidance was exerted by the projection target. The total number of fibres projecting in the direction of the colliculus was not higher than of those projecting in the opposite direction. However, fibres projecting into the colliculus were significantly longer. This was also the case when the colliculus was placed next to the pial side of the cortical explant, indicating that outgrowth direction was not related to this observation. We therefore assume a chemotrophic rather than a chemotactic influence of the projection target on cortical axons, which is based on direct contact of axons to the target tissue. It cannot be excluded, however, that the failure to detect chemotactic guidance was caused by the lack of diffusion gradients in our culture system. Innervation of the collicular slice exclusively originated from layer V pyramidal cells, irrespective of the position of the collicular target. Fibre courses suggested that discrimination of the projection target was achieved upon encounter with the collicular surface by direct membrane contact. Inside the collicular tissue, fibre arborizations occurred preferredly in up to three layers perpendicular to the surface. Even after the smallest tracer injections, termination fields were diffusely distributed over the collicular slice. Also, the spatial distribution of retrogradely stained projection neurons did not differ statistically from an equal distribution. Thus, a high degree of convergence and divergence was observed anatomically in the corticotectal projection formed in vitro, corresponding to the immature state in vivo. The functionality of the corticotectal projection was assessed by intracellular recordings from collicular neurons. Electrophysiological properties, such as membrane potential (-68 +/- 11 mV), membrane resistance (35.4 +/- 27.7 M omega) and the time constant (3.0 +/- 2.1 ms) were comparable to reference values, confirming the viability of our culture preparation. The functionality of corticotectal transmission was revealed by intracellularly recorded responses of collicular cells to extracellular cortical stimulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
Sixteen male Australian paraplegic and tetraplegic subjects competing at the 1977 FESPIC games underwent a physiological assessment. The assessment included a neurological examination, anthropometry, spirometry, maximum oxygen consumption using a wheelchair and motor driven treadmill and a 5 minute post exercise blood lactate. Eight subjects had won gold medals at international competitions for the disabled, and, at the time of testing, two of the subjects were world record holders in track and field events. Spirometry was consistent with other reported values with FVC and FEV1.0 being 4.94 and 4.25 l respectively. The cardiorespiratory data revealed a mean VO2max 2.04+/-0.64 l min-1, and 33.0+/-9.4 ml kg-1 min-1; VE STPD, 60.75+/-22.64 l min-1; maximum heart rate 179+/-20 b min-1 and post exercise lactate 11.73+/-1.94 mM. It was concluded that many physiological variables measured on the Australian subjects at rest and during maximum work were comparable to other trained disabled athletes.

307 cultures of staphylococci and micrococci were isolated from clinical sources and were subjected to 8 different physiological tests for the recognition of pathogentic strains. These tests were as follows; catalase, oxidase, fermentation and oxidation of glucose and mannitol, v.p. and coagulase activity, heat resistance endonuclease, and lipase production. From the results obtained it can be concluded that for the recognition of pathogenicity of staphylococci, coagulase, heat resistance endonuclease and fermentation of mannitol should be carried out.
Success in biathlon involves skiing fast and shooting accurately. The purpose of this study was to determine whether physiological laboratory test results relate to success in biathlon. Tests included treadmill run and double-pole lactate profile and VO2peak tests, and a double-pole peak power test (UBP). 1993 National Points Rank (NR), racing ski time (ST), and shooting percentage (SP) from 1993 World Team Trials and laboratory test results (1993; N = 11 males, 10 females) were examined. Of athletes tested, six males and six females were top 10 U.S. ranked. Significance was identified between NR and ST (males, r = -0.88; females, r = -0.91). NR and SP were related for females (r = 0.75). Maximum run time during the VO2peak test was the only parameter related to NR (r = 0.72) or ST (r = -0.80) for males. Significance was identified for an uphill 1 km on snow double-pole time trial to NR (r = -0.84) and SP (r = -0.79) (subgroup; N = 8 males). For females, NR was related to running VO2peak (r = 0.81) and UBP (r = 0.95). Double-pole and running VO2peak were related to SP for women. This study suggests that SP is more important to NR for females than for males, and gender-specific tests might better predict success in elite biathlon skiers.
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. There is still much uncertainty and debate surrounding its physiological requirements because emphasis is on skills to the neglect of fitness, conservative training methods and the difficulty of studying the sport scientifically. The frequently found values for total distance covered in a game of about 10 km and an above-average, though not outstanding, maximum oxygen uptake of 60 ml/kg/min suggest a moderate overall aerobic demand. A comparison of top teams and players with less able participants indicates that the components of anaerobic fitness-speed, power, strength and the capacity of the lactic acid system may differentiate better between the 2 groups. Generally, there is a reduction in the level of activity in the second half of games compared with the first. There is some evidence that increased aerobic fitness may help counteract this. Progressively lower muscle glycogen stores are one likely cause of reduction in activity, and nutrition also appears to be a key factor in minimising performance deterioration, both in terms of overall diet and, more particularly, the ingestion of carbohydrates immediately before, during and after a game. There are evolutionary trends in the sport such as greater frequency of games, changes in the roles of players, and new strategies and tactics which are placing increasing demands on the all-round fitness of players. Many studies indicate scope for improvement in player fitness. The challenge for coaches and players is to meet these fitness requirements without sacrificing the skill work which makes the sport unique.

Despite numerous investigations on candidiasis, definitive conclusions concerning virulence factors are few because of oftentimes confusing and contradictory results. By utilizing various physiologic tests, which include germ tube induction, inhibition of germination by a morphogenic autoregulatory substance, enzyme production, susceptibility to exogenous chemicals, and cell surface hydrophobicity, we demonstrated that such variability is due, in part, to the environmental conditions in which cells were grown in preparation for analysis. Room-temperature grown cells were generally less sensitive to environmental perturbation and germinated more uniformly than cells grown at 37 degrees C. The implication of these results in relation to pathogenic studies and the epidemiology of candidiasis is suggested.
The effect of electroneuromyostimulation (ENMS) combined with Nootropil administration for trauma neuropathies was assessed using clinical and physiological tests in 58 patients. The combined intervention considerably accelerated the restoration of motor and sensory functions after the reconstructive neurosurgery on the extremities. Sensory functions substantially improved in 78% of the patients receiving ENMS and Nootropil and in 23% of those receiving the conventional treatment. The ENMS plus Nootropil treatment has been found to have advantages as compared with the conventional one.
