This study is adapting Virtual Reality (VR) technologies to teach children with autism new coping skills that may then be generalized in their everyday lives. It helps to understand that children with autism are challenged by a sensory overload and by aversions to a variety of auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli. In addition, their ability to attenuate and/or ignore these stimuli differs from that of the "typical" child. Therefore, our goals were to: 1. assess the potential of each of the children (both with and without verbal skills) for sustained interaction with task environments, 2. to identify which visual, auditory, and kinetic VR components would be attractive to our test group, 3. to identify each child's ability to attenuate and/or ignore a variety of distractors, and 4. to build new "pivotal behaviors" [2] for learning. These pivotal behaviors include: improvement of time-on-task, meaningful and consistent interaction with the real world, and screening out extraneous environmental stimuli. Our findings to date have been very encouraging, and we will continue to investigate the role of VR as a tool for generalized learning and the modification of pivotal behaviors. This ongoing study also provides technology transfer of communications applications from government, universities and businesses out into telemedicine and elementary schools.
The goal of this paper was studying the effectiveness of frequently repeated low values of long duration acceleration on circulatory system response during gradual onset rate of acceleration on a human centrifuge.

This paper describes the evolution of the design of Flatland Sound Service (FSS), a sound system for virtual reality required to support Project TOUCH (Telehealth Outreach for Unified Community Health), a multi-year collaboration between the Schools of Medicine at the state Universities of Hawaii and of New Mexico. Two virtual sonic environments specific case scenarios, a neurological trauma (Toma) and a virtual kidney nephron (Nephron), were developed using integrated services provided by FSS. Flatland is an open source visualization and virtual reality application development tool created at the University of New Mexico.

It was the goal of this study performed in two subsequent technical courses of operative dentistry to find out if the first "professional" contact of dental students with amalgam resulted in a increased mercury excretion. At six different points in time urine analyses using (flame-free) cold vapor nuclear absorption spectroscopy were performed. At the first measurement, prior to working with amalgam, the median values were at 0.53 micrograms Hg/g creatinine (summer term 88) and 1.46 micrograms Hg/g creatinine (winter term 88/89). At the end of the course the median values have increased to 2.49 micrograms Hg/g creatinine (summer term 88) and 2.56 micrograms Hg/g creatinine (winter term 88/89). In the subsequent vacations the Hg values in the students' urine clearly decreased.
