Rhodococcua erythropolis (ATCC 4277.1) is a streptomycin resistant mutant of ATCC 4277, which can decolorize the sulfonated azo dye of Orange II and Amido Black. Pseudomonaes luteola is a decolorizing strain, which was isolated from sludge resulting from the treatment of dyeing wastewater. This study had two purposes: 1) to determine the color removal capacity of R. erythropolis (ATCC 4277.1) for Red 22, V2RP and RP2B dyes; and 2) to compare the decolorization capability of R. erythropolis (ATCC 4277.1) to that of P. luteola, a wild type decolorizing strain. R. erythropolis (ATCC 4277.1) grew well in broth containing the azo dyes of Red 22, V2RP or RP2B, and the color of azo dyes could be removed within five days of incubation. The total percentage of color removal was 70%, 30% and 23%, respectively. Color removal by R. erythropolis occurred through a process of degradation, since after five day's incubation in a dye containing broth, the color of R. erythropolis cells remained the same as their original pinkish white color. Comparison of the color removing ability between R. erythropolis and P. luteola showed that the specific color removal (SCR) of R. erythropolis was 1.52 mg of RP2B degraded per gram of dried cells, and that of SCR of P. luteola was 31.7 mg, which was 30 fold higher than that of R. erythropolis.

The bacteriological study of specimens taken from environmental objects, biomaterials from animals and sputa from tuberculosis patients revealed the ubiquity of Mycobacterium, Nocardia and rhodococci obtained from different kinds of environment in the Republic of Daghestan. In the identification 83.6% out of the isolated atypical Mycobacterium cultures were classified with Ranion groups II and IV. Among Nocardia, the most widespread organisms were N. asteroides (62.7%) and among rhodococci, R. erithropolis (61.9%).

Rhodocci have a morphology similar to that of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), and are indistinguishable from normal diphtheroid flora. Symptoms include fever, productive/non-productive cough and pleuritic chest pain. Rhodococcal infections, being resistant to routine anti-tuberculosis medications, may be misdiagnosed as drug-resistant TB, thus prompting treatment for TB with rifampicin-containing regimens that promote the emergence of resistance. We present here a sputum smear AFB-positive case who, although clinically cured, remains unresolved despite a series of technological investigations as to the cause of infection being purely rhodococci or mixed infection with M. tuberculosis.

Biological dusulfurizaion of petroleum feedstocks and products may offer an attractive alternative to reduce sulfur oxide emissions that cause serious environmental pollution. Dibenzothiophene (DBT), a model of organic sulfur compound in petroleum, can be microbially desulfurized without degradation of the organic structure by 4S pathway. Three desulfurization enzymes (DszA, DszB and DszC) and flavin reductase (DszD) are involved in sulfur-specific DBT desulfurization. DszA and DszC are FMNH2-dependent monoxygenases, FMNH2 is provided from the freely diffusible FMNH2 pool in the cell, and is replenished by DszD. So, co-expression of the desulfurization enzymes and flavin reductase can enhance the rate of sulfur removal. In the present work two incompatible plasmids: pBADD and paN2 were constructed. The paN2 allows Escherichia coli to liberate the sulfur of DBT and DBTs and pBADD produces a flavin reductase. They were co-expressed in Escherichia coli B121 (DE3). The soluble products of DszA, DszB, DszC and DszD accounted for 7.6%, 3.5%, 3.1% and 18% of the total proteins in co-expressed system. The desulfurization rate of lysate of E. coli BL21- pBADD + paN2 is 12.03 micromol/(h x mg) Dsz protein and about 5.4-fold of that of E. coli BL2-paN2. Experiment were also conducted using resting cell with the 0.6 wt% DBT in n-hexadecane as model diesel oil. After 24 hours reaction, 0.42 mmol/L (about 84%) DBT was converted to 2-HBP by E. coli BL21- pBADD + paN2, however, there was only 0.08 mmol/L (about 16%) DBT was desulfurized by E. coli BL2-paN2. The maximum desulfurization rate of E.coli BL21-pBADD + paN2 is about 67 micromol/h. The result shows that DszD enhances the rate of 2-HBP production when co-expressed in vivo with the desulfurization enzymes.

Blast transformation of peripheral blood lymphocytes in healthy people is studied by enzymes of the microbic origin possessing the lectin activity. Galactose oxidase of Fusarium graminearum IMV-F-1060 is shown to be mitogenically active with respect to the lymphocytes in the culture in vitro and may be one of home sources of lymphocytic mitogens for the laboratory investigations.

We studied the inhibitory effect on the PCA reaction of BSA-rabbit anti-BSA (BSA-anti-BSA) system in CP-sensitized and CP-unsensitized guinea pigs by the oral administration of C. equi. Strain Ko-85 (Ko-85) cells. The results were as follows: 1) Guinea pigs were sensitized by intraperitoneal injection with the CP. Nine days later, the animals were administered with an oral dose of 80 mg (W.W.) of Ko-85 cells. The animals were submitted daily to PCA reaction tests using BSA and rabbit anti-BSA serum. The inhibition of PCA reaction of BSA-anti-BSA system in CP-sensitized guinea pigs was shown from 4th day to 10th day after administration of Ko-85 cells. The PCA reaction of 9th day was recognized strong inhibition by the oral administration of Ko-85 cells. 2) CP-unsensitized guinea pigs were given an oral dose of 80 mg of Ko-85 cells, and the animals were submitted every other day to PCA reaction tests of the BSA-anti-BSA system. PCA elicited in these animals on the 9th, 15th and 17th days Ko-85 administration were inhibited compared with those in the control animals (which were not given an oral dose of Ko-85 cells). The strongest inhibition was shown in animals challenged on the 15th day after Ko-85 administration. The inhibitory effect of PCA reaction of BSA-anti-BSA system by the oral administration of an oral dose 80 mg (W.W.) of Ko-85 cells was recognized in CP-sensitized and CP-unsensitized guinea pigs.
