Color vision after laser in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) on color vision. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, China Medical College Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan. METHOD: This prospective study comprised consecutive patients having LASIK. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better and a normal color vision test preoperatively and an uncorrected near visual acuity of 20/40 or better postoperatively. Color vision was tested using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test (FM 100 test) preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month postoperatively. RESULTS: Twenty-nine eyes of 15 patients having LASIK were enrolled in the study. The mean patient age was 29.2 years +/- 2.9 (SD). The mean preoperative spherical equivalent refractive error was -5.6 +/- 1.8 diopters, and the mean preoperative error score of the FM 100 test was 3.79 +/- 1.55. After surgery, no significant change in the error score was observed at 1 day (4.30 +/- 1.07, P =.1039, paired t test), 1 week (3.72 +/- 1.25, P =.8125, paired t test), or 1 month (3.97 +/- 1.29, P =.6149, paired t test). CONCLUSION: Laser in situ keratomileusis did not affect color vision evaluated by the FM 100 test.

Evaluation of the visual system in multiple sclerosis. II. Colour vision.

A study of colour vision (CV) in 65 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), (30 patients had had previous optic neuritis) and 51 controls was carried out with Ishihara's pseudoisochromatic plates (I-test), Farnsworth's panel D-15 test (F-test), and Lanthony's desaturated 15-hue test (L-test). CV defects were classified as to type and severity. Error scorings were calculated by Bowman's computerized method and our own simple proposal for scoring, which was found of equal value. Results were compared with pattern-reversal (black/white) visual evoked potentials (PR-VEP) (80% of eyes abnormal). The I-test (56% of eyes abnormal) was a more sensitive indicator of demyelination than the L-test (47%) and F-test (26%). In 14 eyes CV defects (10 blue-yellow, 4 red-green) were only revealed with the L-test. Abnormal CV, mostly blue-yellow defects, occurred in 16 patients (19 eyes) having normal VEP latencies; 29 patients were re-tested within one week. It is proposed that the performance of the I-test, which showed the highest reproducibility, could be improved by adding more cards, particularly blue-yellow, to the test.

The design of diagnostic tests for defective colour vision.

Pseudoisochromatic plates are among the most popular tests for defective colour vision. They are particularly good for screening but are less good in assessing the degree and type of the colour vision defect. To select colours for use in diagnostic plates a large number of colour defective subjects have made colour matches with the Lovibond Tintometer and the isochromatic data collected. Pseudoisochromatic plates have been printed using pairs of colours only and incorporating both a random dot and a regular dot format. These plates have proved effective in a clinical trial. Not only must pairs of inks be carefully selected to lie upon appropriate isochromatic lines but the luminance contrast between the two colours must be kept within 5%. Failure to control luminance contrast is as much a source of error in currently available pseudoischromatic tests as the inappropriate use of colour.

[Protective sunglasses and color discriminating ability].

The influence on color vision of 4 kinds of sun-glasses with various characteristics of transparency and absorption of 25, 50, 75 p.c. was evaluated. Sixty persons with normal color discrimination took part in investigation. The selection of filters for professional drivers and railway engine-drivers was performed on the basis of Nagel's anomaloscope and Farnworth-Munsell's 100--Hue tests.

Prognostic factors in vitreous surgery for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

A total of 25 proliferative diabetic eyes of 24 patients scheduled for vitrectomy were examined. The overall preoperative visual acuity was below 0.1, corresponding to hand movement in most patients because of intravitreal hemorrhage. Hence, funduscopy was not possible. The following tests were performed in addition to standard clinical examination: Purkinje entoptic phenomenon, laser interferometry, perception of color flashes, and flicker-VEP using 1.8, 7.6, 15, and 30 Hz as stimulating frequencies. Only the flicker-VEP revealed results predicting reliably the functional visual outcome at 6 months after vitrectomy. Patients with a positive preoperative response to 15 or 30 Hz had a significantly (P < 0.05) better visual outcome at 6 months after vitrectomy (mean postoperative visual acuity 0.11; 95% confidence interval, 1/25-0.32) as compared with patients showing a positive preoperative VEP-response to only 1.8 and 7.6 Hz (mean postoperative visual acuity, hand movement; 95% confidence interval, light without projection--1/35). The flicker-VEP can give additional information about the integrity of the retina and the function of the optic nerve and can therefore help the surgeon to predict the functional result after vitrectomy.

A simple screening test for color matching in dentistry.

This study compared a simple and readily available shade guide color-matching test with the general industry standard test for color discrimination. This study indicates that a simple screening test for color defective vision and color discrimination skills in dentistry can be performed by matching two Vita-Lumin shade guides. Those dental office personnel who score a low number of matches in the Vita test (that is, seven or fewer correct matches) should have additional color discrimination testing and refer shade matching to other personnel with higher scores.
