[The medallions of the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine].

Twelve medallions bearing effigies of outstanding figures in modern and contemporary Portuguese history of medicine were carved in marble by José Moreira Rato, to decorate the façade of the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica in Lisbon, inaugurated in April 1906. When this school was closed, the medallions were transferred to the new Medical School in the University City of Lisbon, which opened in 1954. Kept partially obscure, the medallions eventually lost part of their artistic and ornamental brilliancy and three of them became absolutely unidentifiable due to various adversities. In 1988-89, the Medical School decided to restore a medallion depicting Alfonso Rodrigues de Guevara and placed it in the hall of its Aula Magna. The process of re-identification and restoring these works of art had begun. In 1995, all the medallions were conclusively identified, which was a crucial step towards their full restoration and historical and artistic revalorization.

[Bioethics in historical perspective. For a critical approach to bioethics and his relationship to the history of medicine].

What is the history of bioethics? What are the shortcomings of the bioethical approach? And what could the history of medicine do for a better understanding of bioethics as discipline and of bioethical problems themselves? These are the central questions which are stressed in this article. The main conclusion is that bioethics has to be seen as a cultural product which can only be understood if the social context in which this new discipline has emerged is taken into consideration. History of medicine has furthermore the chance to contextualize bioethical problems and in this function history of medicine could be a helpful discipline for a better understanding of current problems in medicine.

[A medico-historical review on biomedicine and its limitations and problems].

Biomedicine is a conceptualized technical term for current medicine in a historical perspective. Physics, chemistry and biology are considered to be the sciences basic to biomedicine. This medical model depends essentially on a mechanistic approach based on understanding of the structure and function or the body. The biomedical model assumes that illness can be explained in terms of morphological, physiological and biochemical derangements or dysfunctions (a reductionist concept of disease). As medicine of primitive ages and ancient times can be conceptualized in terms of witch-philosophical medicine, medicine of the Middle Ages can be conceptualized in terms of religious medicine. The early steps by which modern medical sciences have been gradually built up appeared in the 10th and 17th century. In those ages direction and methodology forward scientific medicine were established. Medicine of Renaissance ages can be conceptualized in terms of mechanical medicine. Remarkable progress has been made in biomedicine in the last three centuries. ...
