RF-plasma-modified polystyrene surfaces for studying complement activation.

Five different plasma modified surfaces were made for studying different aspects of biocompatibility. These surfaces were: 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DACH), acrylic acid (AA), Hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), methane and hexamethylene-disiloxane (HMDSO). In addition a polyethylene-glycol (PEG) was made by grafting aldehyde functional PEG to the DACH surface. PEG and HMDSO which are the most hydrophilic and the most hydrophobic surface shows the lowest amount of adsorbed protein of the three proteins studied here (albumin, IgG and C3). Methane, HMDSO and HEMA was found to activate via the classical (complement activation) pathway while the others activated via the alternative pathway.

Reduction of serum calcium by sodium sulfonated polystyrene resin.

Sodium resin has been clinically administered against hyperkalemia widely, but its effects of lowering the serum calcium has never been documented. In our study, 7 patients with chronic renal failure were chosen at random to take sodium resin 30 g per day for 3 days. The sodium resin not only lowered the serum potassium level (p less than 0.05) but also brought down the level of serum calcium (p less than 0.05). The reduced ability of patients with chronic renal failure to absorb calcium from the gastrointestinal tract is well recognized, so its effects of lowering calcium will be more likely to aggravate the serum calcium imbalance further. If sodium resin has to be used for the maintainance of serum potassium in patients with chronic renal failure the serum calcium should be monitored closely in order to lighten the osteodystrophy and secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Surface modification of polystyrene--platelet adhesion.

Indomethacine is an analgesic and antiinflammatory drug which has antiplatelet and antithrombotic properties. In our work, we have tried to immobilize the same onto a polymer surface covalently. Surface parameters like water contact angle and platelet adhesion are studied. Similar studies are conducted on heparin immobilized surfaces, for relative comparison.

[Sorption capacity of polystyrene plates used in immunoenzyme analysis].

The data indicating that the degree of sorption of the antigen onto the plate depends on the duration of this process are presented. As shown in this investigation, the lower the adsorption activity of the plates, the longer the process of the sensitization of plates with the antigen. The process of the sorption of the antigen onto the plates with low adsorption capacity may be accelerated by sensitizing the plates at different temperatures. Besides, the adsorption capacity of the plates was increased by ultraviolet irradiation.
