Sonographic findings of rotator cuff calcifications.

We studied the findings and value of sonography in the diagnosis of rotator cuff calcifications in comparison to plain radiographs. Sonograms were correlated with plain radiographs in 951 patients. The diagnosis of rotator cuff calcifications was made by ultrasonography in 87 and with plain films in 93 of 951 patients. Sonography displayed two additional bursal slurry calcifications were found on plain films. Three types of calcifications were found with ultrasonography: (1) a hyperechoic focus with a well-defined shadow (79%); (2) a hyperechoic focus with a faint shadow (14%); and, (3) a hyperechoic focus with no shadow (7%). Large and slurry calcifications and bursal calcifications were better seen with ultrasonography, but small and more scattered deposits were better found on plain radiographs. Sonography proved to be reliable in the detection and localization of rotator cuff calcifications, but classification into a formative or resorptive phase could not be done. Because of this and the possibility of pathologic conditions of bone, plain radiographs should always be obtained prior to doing sonography.

[Aneurysmal bone cyst and solitary cyst of bone].

Results of treatment of 7 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts and 12 cases of solitary bone cysts in 19 patients treated in our Department between 1991 and 1996 are presented. Changes were found in the humerus, femur, tibia and fibula. Curettage or excision was the mode of treatment. Recurrence of the condition has been noted in 4 cases. Excision of the change and filling of the defect with autologous or homologous bone graft is more efficient than curettage alone.

[Comparative assesment of methods for the operative treatment of dislocations of the acromial end of the clavicle].

During 20 years the authors observed 861 patients with dislocations of the clavicular acromial process, that made 14% in relation to all other types of dislocations. 252 patients (29.3%) were treated surgically. Capron tapes being used most frequently as an alloplastic material. Surgery was performed after the technic elaborated at the clinic. Late results of the treatment were studied in 202 patients within the terms from 1 to 15 years. Good issues were noted in 76.2%, satisfactory in 37%, poor in 5.5% of patients.

Intra-articular fractures of the upper extremity: new concepts in surgical treatment.

New techniques of internal fixation, postoperative rehabilitation, and emphasis on functional as well as radiographic outcome have refined the surgical treatment of complex fractures of the glenoid, humeral head, supracondylar and intracondylar humerus, olecranon, radial head, distal radius, and distal radioulnar joint over the past decade. Early stabilization and rehabilitation of these injuries leads to soft-tissue stabilization and facilitates the patient's ability to place the hand in three-dimensional space.
