Effects of fasting and feeding and pilocarpine on paneth cells of the mouse.

The effects of fasting and feeding and pilocarpine on Paneth cells (PC) of the mouse were studied by labelling the secretory granules of PC with dopamine and by counting the number of granules. Pilocarpine stimulated the extrusion of granules from the cytoplasm of the cells and significantly decreased their number, whereas fasting for 2 days significantly increased the granule count of cells. Standard food did not have any effect on PC of the duodenum, whereas in the jejunum resuming eating after 2 days fasting significantly decreased the number of granules when compared with the mice deprived of the food.

Investigations on the relations between the biochemical changes in the brain and behaviour of irradiated rats.

The behaviour of irradiated rats and biochemical changes in the brain tissue were investigated in the early period after whole-body irradiation with the dose of 800 R. It was found that after exposition to X-ray psychomotoric activity undergoes phasic modifications. Within the first day the behavioural activation was stated, which was accompanied by the increase of hydroproteolytic and MAO, activity in the brain. Simultaneously a decrease of serotonin and noradrenalin content in the brain stem was found in irradiated rats. On the second and third day of postirradiation syndrome the behavioural inhibition was observed.

[Catecholamine in the myocardium; a fluorescence histochemical study].

There has been many studies on myocardial catecholamine (CA) in congestive heart failure and ishemias heart disease. However, it has been mainly studied pharmacologically and biochemically and has not been elucidated completely the local change of CA of the myocardium. CA in sympathetic nerves was first stained fluorescence histochemically by Falck-Hillarp in 1962, and many observations were made on its distribution and morphologically concentration of CA in tissue was also observed. Furthermore, the fluorescence histochemical simplified method (cryostat method) by Laties and Jacobowitz was published in 1967. This cryostat method produced the same good preparation instead of the freezed dried method of Falck-Hillarp and could be used semi-quantitatively for the determination of CA concentration in tissue. The author examined fluorescent-histochemically the distribution of CA in sympathetic nerve endings of the myocardium of animals (mouses, rabbits and dogs). After the administration of several agents and in some pathologic conditions, those were in the hypertrophied heart and impending heart failure, in myocardial infarction and A-V block. Furthermore, the change of CA in the myocardium was examined biochemically by von Euler method and its results were compared with the results of fluorescence-histo chemical method.

Comparison of central effects of noradrenaline and dopamine injected into the lateral brain ventricle in rats.

Noradrenaline and dopamine injected into the lateral brain ventricle exerted a significant effect on the behavior of rats. Both amines caused a slight rise in the basic locomotor activity which was significantly increased in the animals with inhibited monoamine oxidase activity. Besides that, they suppressed the behavior of rats in the open-field test, inhibited the conditioned avoidance response, decreased body temperature and increased amphetamine-induced motor hyperactivity. Noradrenaline, in contrast to dopamine, changed the intensity of amphetamine-induced stereotypy and prolonged the action of hypnotics. The central action of both catecholamines (in higher doses especially) seemed to have a biphasic course: in the first phase after administration depression was observed which was more pronounced after noradrenaline administration, in the second phase a stimulating effect b

[Effect of adepren on the behavior and brain catecholamines of rats in an open field setup].

The authors carried out experimental studies with the Bulgarian preparat on Adepren on the behaviour of rats in open field procedure together with parallel electroencephalographic studies and examined the changes in the content of cerebral catecholamines during acute and chronic administration. The preparation after single application had depresive effect on both components of the motor activity: horisontal and vertical. The horizontal component of the motor activity surpassed the norm with almost 20% at the end of the experimental period after chronic administration. There was desynchronizing effect in the KEG recordings. Adepren after acute and chronic application elevated significantly the level of noradrenaline and dopamine in the brain. The obtained results gave a foundation to the authors to suggest that the examined preparation and maoinhibiting effect.

Histochemical localization of capillary enzyme activities in brain smears.

Since the regulation of the vascular permeability in the CNS is dependent partly on the enzymes associated with the wall of brain capillaries, the histochemical demonstration of these enzymes may furnish further data on the function of the blood brain barrier (BBB), a new methodological approach, using brain smears was developed for the histochemical demonstration of several enzymes participating in the function of the BBB. The method presented renders possible also the subsequent demonstration of monoamines and the activity of different enzymes in the same tissue preparation. The usefulness of this simple technique in the study of brain capillary functions is discussed.
