Mechanical properties of suture materials in vitro and after in vivo implantation in horses.

Tensile testing of reproducible loops of size 5 braided polyester, size 2 polyglycolic acid, size 2 monofilament nylon, and size 2 polydioxanone sutures was performed in vitro and after subcutaneous implantation in horses for 7, 14, and 28 days. Maximum breaking strength, energy absorption, and percentage elongation to breakage point were measured. Size 5 braided polyester had the highest maximum breaking strength and energy absorption over 28 days. Polydioxanone had better mechanical performance over 28 days than did polyglycolic acid. On day 28, none of these parameters was measurable in polyglycolic acid. Monofilament nylon had the lowest breaking strength of the three materials tested on day 28.

Biomechanical evaluation of a toggle pin technique for management of coxofemoral luxation.

Toggle pin stabilization is an accepted technique for the management of coxofemoral (CF) luxation in dogs. The purpose of this study was to determine, in vitro, the respective contributions of several aspects of toggle pin repair to the overall stability of fixation. Factors evaluated were the manner and frequency with which toggle pins oriented on insertion, effect of orientation on toggle pin strength, effect of suture type on ligament prosthesis strength and load sustained by the fixation, and comparison of repair using a modified toggle design to that of capsulorrhaphy. When placed in cadavers using standard technique, conventional toggle pins were found to orient significantly more frequently in one of two possible positions. Mechanical testing of fixations performed in experimentally luxated cadaver hips demonstrated a high (12/20) incidence of toggle pin failure using the conventional implant in the most common orientation. When tested alone, toggle pins were weakest mechanically in this orientation. Rotating the implant 180 degrees increased mean load to failure by 249%. There was no significant difference in load sustained by conventional toggle fixations using No. 2 braided polyester versus 50 lb test monofilament nylon as the suture ligament prosthesis. However, the higher stiffness of the polyester suture may be more favorable for use in this application. Fixation using a toggle rod designed to allow evaluation of construct stability when failure of the toggle is eliminated resulted in an increase in maximum load sustained before luxation (47% of the intact control hips). This load was not significantly different than the resistance to luxation afforded by capsulorrhaphy. This study suggests that when implanting conventional toggle pins, consideration should be given to ensuring placement in the strongest orientation.

Exposure, skin protection and occupational skin diseases in the glass-fibre-reinforced plastics industry.

A total of 100 workers, 86 from the glass-fibre-reinforced plastics (GRP) industry, 11 from polystyrene production and 3 from polyester resin coating manufacture, were examined for occupational skin hazards and for evaluation of skin protection. The workers had been exposed to many chemicals. Those working in the GRP industry had also been exposed to glass fibre and to dust produced by finishing work. 94% used protective gloves. 22 workers, all employed in the GRP industry, had contracted occupational skin disorders. 6 had allergic and 12 irritant contact dermatitis. 4 workers had an accidental injury caused by a peroxide catalyst, fire, hot air and constant mechanical friction. Allergic dermatoses were due to natural rubber (latex) (4 cases) in protective gloves, phenol-formaldehyde resin (1 case) and cobalt naphthenate (1 case). Irritant hand dermatoses (5 cases) were caused by the combined hazardous effect of unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester resins, organic solvents, glass fibre and dust from finishing work on the skin. Other cases of irritant dermatoses (7 cases) were due to the dust, promoted by mechanical friction of clothes. Skin disorders in the GRP industry were common (26%) but the symptoms were mild and only 3 patients had been on sick leave because of occupational skin disease.

Influence of temperature and foil hardness on interocclusal tactile threshold.

Determinations of interocclusal tactile threshold levels so far have involved neither appropriate psychophysical approaches nor an assessment of the mechanical and thermal properties of the foils used. Twenty subjects (12 females) aged 18 to 50 (mean age 35) were tested for their absolute threshold level (RL). Both the method of limits and the staircase method were applied to determine the active or passive RL. For the active RL assessment, foils of different thicknesses were placed between edge-to-edge opposed incisors during gentle biting. Inner ear receptors of the blindfolded subjects were blocked by broad band noise applied through earphones, because vibrations induced by occlusal contact and conducted through bone might be perceived by these receptors. The foils presented were aluminum (Al), tin (Sn), polyester (PE) and calibrated steel (St) (thickness ranging from 8 to 50 microns) which offer different physical and thermal properties. The range of RL of the group varied between 8 microns for aluminum to 46 microns for polyester for 50% correct assessments. Increasing the foil temperature from room temperature (20 degrees C) to body temperature (35 degrees C) significantly increased the RL for conducting materials (one-way blocked ANOVA). These results indicate that temperature exchange takes place while presenting conducting foils at 20 degrees C (cold stimulus) interocclusally, which influences the RL by activating thermosensitive receptors. The passive RL determination with classical von Frey-hairs resulted in a mean axial RL of 3.0 g. Both psychophysical RL assessments (method of limits, staircase method) gave reproducible and similar results as ascertained by ANOVA. Furthermore, a positive correlation was established between active and passive RL (Pearson correlation test).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Strategy of leukocyte filtration for immunomodulation: development of stainless steel leukocyte filter.

Commercially available leukocyte filters are frequently used to prepare leukocyte depleted blood products for prevention of transfusion reactions. Recently, immunomodulation by using leukocyte filtration was evaluated. At this time, a new leukocyte filter was fabricated with a 4 microm diameter stainless steel fiber. The goal of this study was to assess the efficiency of the stainless steel filter for leukocyte and platelet removal by comparison with the polyester filter that is commercially available. The production of humoral factors, including interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1 Ra), was also evaluated. The results show that the stainless steel filter has more than 2 times greater efficiency in leukocyte removal than the polyester filter. Furthermore, the cytokine studies indicate good biocompatibility of the filter, and the stainless steel filter has a possibility of inhibiting inflammatory cytokines by inducing interleukin-1 receptor.

Enhanced accumulation and changed monomer composition in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) copolyester by in vitro evolution of Aeromonas caviae PHA synthase.

By in vitro evolution experiment, we have first succeeded in acquiring higher active mutants of a synthase that is a key enzyme essential for bacterial synthesis of biodegradable polyester, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Aeromonas caviae FA440 synthase, termed PhaC(Ac), was chosen as a good target for evolution, since it can synthesize a PHA random copolyester of 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyhexanoate [P(3HB-co-3HHx)] that is a tough and flexible material compared to polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) homopolyester. The in vitro enzyme evolution system consists of PCR-mediated random mutagenesis targeted to a limited region of the phaC(Ac) gene and screening mutant enzymes with higher activities based on two types of polyester accumulation system by using Escherichia coli for the synthesis of PHB (by JM109 strain) (S. Taguchi, A. Maehara, K. Takase, M. Nakahara, H. Nakamura, and Y. Doi, FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 198:65-71, 2001) and of P(3HB-co-3HHx) [by LS5218 [fadR601 atoC(Con)] strain]. The expression vector for the phaC(Ac) gene, together with monomer-supplying enzyme genes, was designed to synthesize PHB homopolyester from glucose and P(3HB-co-3HHx) copolyester from dodecanoate. Two evolved mutant enzymes, termed E2-50 and T3-11, screened through the evolution system exhibited 56 and 21% increases in activity toward 3HB-coenzyme A, respectively, and consequently led to enhanced accumulation (up to 6.5-fold content) of P(3HB-co-3HHx) in the recombinant LS5218 strains. Two single mutations in the mutants, N149S for E2-50 and D171G for T3-11, occurred at positions that are not highly conserved among the PHA synthase family. It should be noted that increases in the 3HHx fraction (up to 16 to 18 mol%) were observed for both mutants compared to the wild type (10 mol%).

Survival of enterococci and staphylococci on hospital fabrics and plastic.

The transfer of gram-positive bacteria, particularly multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), among patients is a growing concern. One critical aspect of bacterial transfer is the ability of the microorganism to survive on various common hospital surfaces. The purpose of this study was to determine the survival of 22 gram-positive bacteria (vancomycin-sensitive and -resistant enterococci and methicillin-sensitive and -resistant staphylococci) on five common hospital materials: smooth 100% cotton (clothing), 100% cotton terry (towels), 60% cotton-40% polyester blend (scrub suits and lab coats), 100% polyester (privacy drapes), and 100% polypropylene plastic (splash aprons). Swatches were inoculated with 10(4) to 10(5) CFU of a microorganism, assayed daily by placing the swatches in nutritive media, and examining for growth after 48 h. All isolates survived for at least 1 day, and some survived for more than 90 days on the various materials. Smaller inocula (10(2)) survived for shorter times but still generally for days. Antibiotic sensitivity had no consistent effect on survival. The long survival of these bacteria, including MRSA and VRE, on commonly used hospital fabrics, such as scrub suits, lab coats, and hospital privacy drapes, underscores the need for meticulous contact control procedures and careful disinfection to limit the spread of these bacteria.

A new synthetic material for the brow suspension procedure.

This report describes the use of a new synthetic material, combining polyester with carbon, in nine brow suspension procedures. The mechanical properties of polyester, with the fibrous tissue inducing properties of carbon, combine to produce a scaffolding on which fibrovascular ingrowth is possible. Subsequent fibrosis gives a permanent effect. Early results indicate that the material is tolerated well in the eyelid, but the problem of early slippage remains.

Synthesis of trimethoxy- or triethoxysilane-endcapped polylactones via a bismuth(III)hexanoate-catalyzed one-pot-procedure.

It was shown that bismuth(III)hexanoate (Bi(OHex)3) efficiently and selectively catalyzes the addition of tetra(ethylene glycol) (TEG) onto the isocyanate group of 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane, IPTES. delta-Valerolactone (deltaVL), epsilon-caprolactone (epsilonCL) and D,L-lactide were polymerized by initiation with TEG/Bi(OHex)3. The resulting telechelic polyesters were in situ functionalized with IPTES or with 3-isocyanatopropyl trimethoxysilane, IPTMS. Using pentaerythritol as co-initiator of Bi(OHex)3 and epsilonCL as monomer, star-shaped polylactones having triethylsilyl end-groups were synthesized in a one-pot-procedure. All functionalized polyesters were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Bi(OHex)3 is a remarkable initiator and catalyst, because of its extraordinary low toxicity.

Impact of endograft material on the inflammatory response after elective endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of endograft material on the inflammatory response after elective endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Consecutive patients (n = 22, all men, 53 to 82 years old) were divided into 2 groups according to the graft material used: In group A (n = 12) the endovascular device was made of polyester and in group B (n = 10) the device was made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). All patients received antiinflammatory drugs in the perioperative period. Fever, white blood cells and platelet count, serum concentrations of cytokines (interleukin 6 [IL-6], tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-alpha], interleukin 8 [IL-8], acute-phase proteins high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP] and alpha1-antitrypsin [alpha1-antitrypsin]), and complement protein (C3a) were measured preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours after aneurysm exclusion. One patient in each group had a systemic inflammatory response syndrome with 2 of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria. No other complication associated with inflammation were present in any patient. Fever was more frequent in group A patients. Increases of white blood cells and serum concentrations of IL-6, TNF-alpha, hsCRP, alpha1-antitrypsin, and C3a and decrease of platelet count were recorded in both groups, but no statistically significant difference between them was recorded. However, serum concentrations of IL-8 were significantly higher in group A patients 24 hours postoperatively (p = 0.01). No significant difference was apparent in the biological response between patients receiving a polyester or an ePTFE stent graft, except for fever and serum concentrations of IL-8.

Reverse remodeling by net cardioplasty in a model of dilated cardiomyopathy: results of an animal study.

AIM: End-stage heart failure is a growing clinical problem with only a few satisfactory therapeutical options. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is associated with a progressive decline in cardiac function. Our hypothesis was to arrest this worsening of cardiac function by mechanically containing the dilated heart with a special net. METHODS: In 16 pigs (50+/-7 kg) DCM congestive heart failure was initiated by rapid ventricular pacing (220 b/m). In series 1 (n=8) a polyester net was placed around both ventricles before pacing was induced, whereas in series 2 (n=8) ventricular wrapping was performed when DCM was established. RESULTS: Comparing hemodynamic data before re-operation of group 11-animals, the decrease of CO and dp/dt(max) was significantly lower in series 1 than in series 2 compared to the baseline values before pacing (CO: series 1:-22.6+/-3.3%, series 2:-52.4+/-6.4%, p<0.05; dp/dt: series 1: +16.4+/-2.8%, series 2: -51.5+/-5.9%, p<0.05). In series 2, after net implantation, we could furthermore show that deterioration of the animal stopped and hemodynamic data improved significantly in the following 2 weeks (CO: +62.9+/-10.5% and dp/dt +37.0+/-6.8%). CONCLUSION: Ventricular containment with a polyester net seems to be a therapeutic option in cardiac insuffiency caused by ventricular dilation. This cardioplasty induced a reverse remodeling of the dilated hearts with a significant improvement in diastolic and systolic ventricular function.

An arterial prosthesis from Argentina: the Barone Microvelour arterial graft.

The manufacture of a polyester vascular prosthesis in the southern hemisphere is a new development in the global dissemination of this maturing technology. Hence the recent introduction of the Barone Microvelour arterial graft from Argentina has highlighted the need for a comparative in vitro and in vivo study to compare its structure and performance with that of existing commercial products. Following a series of laboratory tests and implantations as a thoracoabdominal bypass in dogs, the Barone Microvelour has been identified as a strong graft constructed after the style of early weft-knitted designs. It provides an equivalent sequence and rate of healing to that of other polyester knitted grafts.

Hybrid muscular tissues: preparation of skeletal muscle cell-incorporated collagen gels.

We prepared three different types of hybrid muscular tissues in which C2C12 cells (skeletal muscle myoblast cell line) were incorporated in type I collagen gels and then differentiated to myotubes upon culture: a disc-type, a polyester mesh-reinforced sheet-type, and a tubular type. A cold mixed solution of the cells and type I collagen was poured into three different types of molds and was kept at 37 degrees C in an incubator to form C2C12 cell-incorporated gels. A polyester mesh was incorporated into a gel to form the sheet-type tissue. The tubular hybrid tissue was prepared by pouring a mixed solution into the interstitial space of a tubular mold consisting of an outer sheath and a mandrel and subsequently culturing after removal of the outer sheath. Hybrid tissues were incubated in a growth medium (20% fetal bovine serum medium) for the first 4 days and then in a differentiation medium (2% horse serum medium) to induce formation of myotubes. Transparent fragile gels shrank with time to form opaque gels, irrespective of type, resulting in the formation of quite dense hybrid tissues. On day 14 of incubation, myoblasts fused and differentiated to form multinucleated myotubes. For a tubular type hybrid tissue, both cells and collagen fiber bundles became circumferentially oriented with incubation time. Periodic mechanical stress loading to a mesh-reinforced hybrid tissue accelerated the cellular orientation along the axis of the stretch. The potential applications for use as living tissue substitutes in damaged and diseased skeletal and cardiac muscle and as vascular grafts are discussed.

First-generation aortic endografts: analysis of explanted Stentor devices from the EUROSTAR Registry.

PURPOSE: To examine the structure and healing characteristics of chronically implanted Stentor endografts that were explanted due to migration, endoleak, thrombosis, or aneurysm expansion. METHODS: The devices were harvested following reoperation (n = 5) or autopsy (n = 1) with implantation times ranging from 13 to 53 months. Structural modifications to the metal components were examined using radiography, endoscopy, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specimens taken from components of the modular stent-grafts were examined histologically and with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess healing behavior. Physical and chemical stability of the nitinol wires and woven polyester graft material was evaluated using SEM and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. RESULTS: Although the endografts were retrieved for a variety of reasons, they exhibited similar healing and structural modifications. The woven polyester sleeve showed evidence of yarn shifting and distortion, yarn damage, and filament breakage leading to the formation of openings in the fabric. The luminal surface endografts showed incomplete healing characterized by a poorly organized, nonadherent thrombotic matrix of variable thickness. Radiographic and endoscopic observations indicated that structural failure of the grafts, particularly in the main aortic component, was related to severe compaction and dislocation of the metallic frame due to suture breaks. Corrosion marks were observed on some nitinol wires in all devices. Chemical analysis and ion bombardment of the nitinol wires revealed that the surface concentrations of titanium and nickel were not homogenous. The first layer was composed of carbon or organic elements, followed by a stratum of highly oxidized titanium with a low nickel concentration; the titanium-nickel alloy lay beneath these layers. CONCLUSIONS: Although the materials selected for construction of endovascular grafts appears judicious, the assembly of these biomaterials into various interrelated structures within the device requires further improvement.

Evaluation of KO-Tab 1-2-3: a wash-resistant 'dip-it-yourself' insecticide formulation for long-lasting treatment of mosquito nets.

INTRODUCTION: Insecticide-treated nets (ITN) are an important method of preventing malaria. To remain effective, they need to be re-treated with pyrethroid insecticide at approximately yearly intervals. Systems for re-treating nets in Africa are limited, and the vast majority of nets in use have never been treated or were treated only once. Bayer Environmental Science (BES) has developed a long-lasting formulation 'KO-Tab 1-2-3' which can be applied to the net post-manufacture, under field conditions, and renders the insecticide wash-resistant. METHODS: The performance of polyester nets treated with three kinds of BES long-lasting formulations, a conventional ITN (treated with standard KO-Tab) and PermaNet 2.0 were evaluated after washing samples of treated netting up to 30 times using standard WHO procedures. Performance was measured using 'three-minute exposure' and 'median time to knockdown' bioassay tests and by measuring the levels of deltamethrin using high-pressure liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The conventional ITN was largely stripped of deltamethrin within 5-10 washes and insecticidal efficacy in bioassay declined to suboptimal levels. With PermaNet and KO-Tab 1-2-3 the loss of deltamethrin was much slower: insecticide content halved within 20 washes and there was no loss of biological efficacy in three-minute exposure bioassays in WHO cylinders even after 30 washes. After 30 washes there remained on the netting 16% (4.4 mg/m2) of the loading dose of KO-Tab 1-2-3 and 28% (18.8 mg/m2) of the loading dose of PermaNet. CONCLUSION: KO-Tab 1-2-3 was confirmed to be a long-lasting insecticide formulation. This finding raises the prospect of conventional polyester nets being converted into long-lasting insecticidal nets through simple dipping in the community or at home. This single development, if widely adopted, could transform the malaria control landscape in Africa and have a major impact on malaria.

Surface roughness of composite resins after finishing and polishing.

This study evaluated the effect of surface finishing methods on the average surface roughness of resin composites. Seven composites and two polishing systems were used. One hundred and twenty-six conical specimens of each material were prepared in stainless steel molds against a polyester strip. Forty-two of them remained intact and were used as controls. Each half of the remaining samples was polished with either diamond burs or diamond burs + aluminum oxide discs. The results showed no statistical difference in average surface roughness (Ra, microm) between the polyester strip and aluminum oxide discs (p > 0.05). However, finishing with diamond burs showed a statistically higher average roughness for all composites (p < 0.05). Statistical differences were detected among materials (p < 0.05) in the use of diamond burs.

Experimental rotator cuff repair. A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: The repair of chronic, massive rotator cuff tears is associated with a high rate of failure. Prospective studies comparing different repair techniques are difficult to design and carry out because of the many factors that influence structural and clinical outcomes. The objective of this study was to develop a suitable animal model for evaluation of the efficacy of different repair techniques for massive rotator cuff tears and to use this model to compare a new repair technique, tested in vitro, with the conventional technique. METHODS: We compared two techniques of rotator cuff repair in vivo using the left shoulders of forty-seven sheep. With the conventional technique, simple stitches were used and both suture ends were passed transosseously and tied over the greater tuberosity of the humerus. With the other technique, the modified Mason-Allen stitch was used and both suture ends were passed transosseously and tied over a cortical-bone-augmentation device. This device consisted of a poly(L/D-lactide) plate that was fifteen millimeters long, ten millimeters wide, and two millimeters thick. Number-3 braided polyester suture material was used in all of the experiments. RESULTS: In pilot studies (without prevention of full weight-bearing), most repairs failed regardless of the technique that was used. The simple stitch always failed by the suture pulling through the tendon or the bone; the suture material did not break or tear. The modified Mason-Allen stitch failed in only two of seventeen shoulders. In ten shoulders, the suture material failed even though the stitches were intact. Thus, we concluded that the modified Mason-Allen stitch is a more secure method of achieving suture purchase in the tendon. In eight of sixteen shoulders, the nonaugmented double transosseous bone-fixation technique failed by the suture pulling through the bone. The cortical-bone-augmentation technique never failed. In definite studies, prevention of full weight-bearing was achieved by fixation of a ten-centimeter-diameter ball under the hoof of the sheep. This led to healing in eight of ten shoulders repaired with the modified Mason-Allen stitch and cortical-bone augmentation. On histological analysis, both the simple-stitch and the modified Mason-Allen technique caused similar degrees of transient localized tissue damage. Mechanical pullout tests of repairs with the new technique showed a failure strength that was approximately 30 percent of that of an intact infraspinatus tendon at six weeks, 52 percent of that of an intact tendon at three months, and 81 percent of that of an intact tendon at six months. CONCLUSIONS: The repair technique with a modified Mason-Allen stitch with number-3 braided polyester suture material and cortical-bone augmentation was superior to the conventional repair technique. Use of the modified Mason-Allen stitch and the cortical-bone-augmentation device transferred the weakest point of the repair to the suture material rather than to the bone or the tendon. Failure to protect the rotator cuff post-operatively was associated with an exceedingly high rate of failure, even if optimum repair technique was used. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Different techniques for rotator cuff repair substantially influence the rate of failure. A modified Mason-Allen stitch does not cause tendon necrosis, and use of this stitch with cortical-bone augmentation yields a repair that is biologically well tolerated and stronger in vivo than a repair with the conventional technique. Unprotected repairs, however, have an exceedingly high rate of failure even if optimum repair technique is used. Postoperative protection from tension overload, such as with an abduction splint, may be necessary for successful healing of massive rotator cuff tears.

Effects of two kinds of underwear on thermophysiological responses and clothing microclimate during 30 min walking and 60 min recovery in the cold.

Thermophysiological responses and clothing microclimate under the influences of different underwear materials were compared during walking and recovery in the cold. Two kinds of underwear were used: two layers of cotton underwear with two-piece long-sleeved shirt and long-legged trousers (C), two layers of polypropylene underwear with two-piece long-sleeved shirt and long-legged trousers (P). In addition, the subject put on a two-piece ski suit of 100% polyester including 100% polyester padding. Seven adult females served as subjects in this study. The test was done in a climatic chamber at an ambient air temperature of 2 degrees C, a relative humidity of 65% and an air velocity of 0.14 m.s-1. The subject walked on a motor-driven treadmill with a 6 km/h speed for 30 min followed by 60 min recovery. Rectal temperature, skin temperatures, clothing microclimate (temperature, humidity), metabolic heat production and heart rate were measured. Furthermore, subjective ratings on thermal sensation, sweating/shivering sensation, clothing wettedness sensation and skin wettedness sensation for whole body were asked. The major findings are summarized as follows: 1) Mean skin temperature was not significantly different during walking, but it was significantly higher in P than in C during the recovery. 2) The absolute humidity of innermost layer and outermost layer were not significantly different during walking, but it was significantly higher in P than in C during the recovery. 3) Clothing microclimate temperature of innermost was not significantly different during the first half of walking, but it was significantly higher in C than in P during the second half of walking and significantly lower in C than in P during the recovery. Clothing microclimate temperature of outermost was not significantly different during walking, but it was significantly higher in P than in C during the recovery. 4) Metabolic heat production for the last 10 min during recovery tended to be higher in P. 5) The degree of skin wettedness sensation and clothing wettedness sensation for whole body was significantly higher in P during walking and recovery. Thus, it was concluded that two kinds of underwear with different properties to moisture could influence, not only clothing microclimate, but also physiological parameters like skin temperatures and metabolic heat production in the cold differently.
