The implementation of the prospective payment system for inpatient Medicare services and the usage of Diagnosis Related Groups as a vehicle for allocation of monies to providers has impacted significantly the health care industry as a whole. Librarians are instrumental in providing information to key health care personnel to meet the strategic challenge of prospective payment. This article reviews the evolution of prospective payment by DRG and provides selected sources of information as a beginning in developing a knowledge of the facets of prospective payment and the health care environment.

We reported the isolation and identification of 10828 putative full-length cDNAs (FL-cDNA) from an indica rice cultivar, Minghui 63, with the long-term goal to isolate all full-length cDNAs from indica genome. Comparison with the databases showed that 780 of them are new rice cDNAs with no match in japonica cDNA database. Totally, 9078 of the FL-cDNAs contained predicted ORFs matching with japonica FL-cDNAs and 6543 could find homologous proteins with complete ORFs. 53% of the matched FL-cDNAs isolated in this study had longer 5'UTR than japonica FL-cDNAs. In silico mapping showed that 9776 (90.28%) of the FL-cDNAs had matched genomic sequences in the japonica genome and 10046 (92.78%) had matched genomic sequences in the indica genome. The average nucleotide sequence identity between the two subspecies is 99.2%. A majority of FL-cDNAs (90%) could be classified with GO (gene ontology) terms based on homology proteins. More than 60% of the new cDNAs isolated in this study had no homology to the known proteins. This set of FL-cDNAs should be useful for functional genomics and proteomics studies.

Many microbial genome sequences have been determined, and more new genome projects are ongoing. Shotgun sequencing of randomly cloned short pieces of genomic DNA can provide a simple way of determining whole genome sequences. This process requires sequencing of many fragments, compilation of the separate sequences into one contiguous sequence, and careful editing of the assembled sequence. The genes present on the microbial genome are then predicted using clues derived from typical gene features, such as codon usage, ribosomal binding sequences, and bacterial initiation codons. Function of genes is predicted by homology searches performed against either public or well-established protein databases. This chapter discusses each of these stages in a genome-sequencing project.
This essay is a discussion of several elements of Mariam Cohen's (2002) psychoanalytic reflections regarding the autobiographical account of Judith Bruder's gradual religious conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Catholicism. Despite advances in theory, it remains unclear how psychoanalysis is to accommodate the notion of an objective divine entity that truly exists behind the patient's religious representations. It would seem that the particular kind of object posited by religion is destined to remain the insoluble and nonnegotiable limit of psychoanalysis, akin to the virtual "navel" that Freud hypothesized as the endpoint or foveal spot of every dream. In order to advance theory and practice, the material used for discussion must be the product of some kind of intensive psychoanalytic process. Practically, it seems inaccurate, or at least incomplete, simply to state that a religious personality or representation has "converged into integration," as Cohen emphasizes, without also acknowledging that salient divergences occur simultaneously, whose tandem cooperation with convergence signifies healthy mindedness.
Scholars in Disability history and Disability studies have produced a substantive corpus of works in the last two decades. The range of topics represent the diverse nature of this field. This essay is intended as an introductory historiography, and thus presents only a narrow sampling of books. It includes general works in both Disability history and Disability studies, focusing primarily on three topics in Disability history: representation, science/technology/eugenics, and memoirs.
