Radiography in advanced periodontal disease. Determination of alveolar bone height over a 2-year interval.

An investigation was performed on 10 patients with advanced periodontal disease. A 3-step periodontal-orthodontic--occlusal therapy was performed followed by programmed plaque-control and professional tooth-cleaning. A longitudinal radiographic study was performed over a period of two years using an Eggen filmholder in combination with individual interocclusal acrylic indices. Measurements of tooth length and alveolar bone height were made using compasses and a transverse scale. An additional registration of bone height was made with a calibrated magnifier. In order to evaluate the precision of registrations a photogrammetric study was carried out using a stereo-comparator. The precision of tooth length and bone height measurements varied between 0.12-0.36 mm. No significant loss of alveolar bone was found during the two year study.

The rate and route of fluid resorption from the subretinal space of the rabbit.

Small nonrhegmatogenous detachments were formed in living rabbit eyes by injecting a few microliters of fluid into the subretinal space. The change in volume of these detachments was followed by sequential photogrammetric measurements. Detachments of 1 to 3 mm diameter filled with a balanced salt and glucose solution (Ames' solution) resorbed at a constant rate over approximately 80 min of observation and appeared to be totally resorbed within 2 to 6 hr. The rate at which fluid resorbed per unit area of pigment epithelium was consistent with the rate of resorption in other transporting epithelia as well as with clinical observations in humans. Detachments filled with isotonic sucrose resorbed much more slowly than those filled with saline solutions, suggesting that fluid resorption requires the passage of ions through cell membranes. Hypoxia markedly and reversibly reduced the rate of resorption, suggesting that active transport is involved in the removal of the saline solutions from the subretinal space Anatomical and physiological evidence indicate that the site of active transport is the pigment epithelium. Active resorption of subretinal fluid is probably a factor in the maintenance of normal retinal adhesion.

Aortic valve mechanics--Part I: material properties of natural porcine aortic valves.

A new methodology has been developed whereby the inhomogeneous and anisotropic aspects of an irregularly surfaced organ component have been incorporated in establishing the material properties of its tissue. Specifically the direction-dependent post-transition elastic moduli have been calculated from microtensile experiments for the porcine aortic valve leaflets with an average of ECIRC/ERAD = 3.2. Furthermore pressure-strain data have been measured for a grid of points on the surface of a porcine aortic valve and an isostrain map has been developed for P = 80 mm. Hg. These data are used for the stress analysis of porcine aortic valves which is the subject of a companion paper.

Video integrated measurement system.

A Video Integrated Measurement (VIM) System is described which incorporates the use of various noninvasive diagnostic procedures (moire contourography, electromyography, posturometry, infrared thermography, etc.), used individually or in combination, for the evaluation of neuromusculoskeletal and other disorders and their management with biofeedback and other therapeutic procedures. The system provides for measuring individual diagnostic and therapeutic modes, or multiple modes by split screen superimposition, of real time (actual) images of the patient and idealized (ideal-normal) models on a video monitor, along with analog and digital data, graphics, color, and other transduced symbolic information. It is concluded that this system provides an innovative and efficient method by which the therapist and patient can interact in biofeedback training/learning processes and holds considerable promise for more effective measurement and treatment of a wide variety of physical and behavioral disorders.

[Quantitative morphological studies on the zoma glomerulosa of the rat adrenal gland. I. Basic principles of stereology].

Quantitative morphological study of the zona glomerulosa of the rat adrenal was carried out. Basic principles of the method used are reviewed. The most important stereological methods and correlations described in the literature and used for the study of quantitative relations of the stereological structure on two-dimensional microscopic pictures are discussed.
