Recognition of visual stimuli from multiple neuronal activity in monkey visual cortex.

Response patterns recorded with 30 microelectrodes from area 17 of anaesthetized monkeys are analysed. A proportion of the patterns are used to define prototype response patterns. These in turn are used to recognize the stimulus from further non-averaged response patterns. In comparison, recognition by a feedforward 'neural network' is much slower, and slightly inferior. The excitation time structure, with a resolution of about 20 ms, is found to contribute strongly to the recognition. There is some inter-ocular recognition for oriented moving bars, and for on and off phases of switched lights, but none for colours. Generalizations over some stimulus parameters (i.e. cases of confusion) are examined: If small jerking shapes are incorrectly recognized, in general the jerk direction often is the correct one. The onset of a response can most easily be found by determining the dissimilarity relative to spontaneous activity in a sliding window.

Optimal response of eye and hand motor systems in pointing at a visual target. I. Spatio-temporal characteristics of eye and hand movements and their relationships when varying the amount of visual information.

In a task requiring an optimal hand pointing (with regards to both time and accuracy) at a peripheral target, there is first a saccade of the eye within 250 ms, followed 100 ms later by the hand movement. However the latency of the hand movement is poorly correlated with that of the eye movement. When the peripheral target is cut off at the onset of the saccade, there is no correlation between the error of the gaze position and the error of the hand pointing. This suggests an early parallel processing of the two motor outputs. The duration of hand movement does not change significantly when subjects either see or not see their hand (closed or open loop). In the open loop situation, the undershoot of the hand pointing increases with target eccentricity, whatever the subjects are allowed or not to do a saccade toward the target. It suggests that the encoding of eye position by itself is a poor index for an accurately guided movement of the hand.

Lateral suprasylvian visual cortex is activated earlier than or synchronously with primary visual cortex in the cat.

To explore functional connectivity between area 17 and posteromedial lateral suprasylvian (PMLS) area of the cat cerebral cortex, we carried out cross-correlation analysis of spike trains of neurons recorded simultaneously from both areas of anesthetized, paralyzed cat. Most of correlated pairs had peaks which indicate that PMLS cells were activated earlier than or simultaneously with their partners in area 17, suggesting that 'backward' as well as synchronous activation operates between these cortical areas.

Visual evoked potential assessment of the effects of glaucoma on visual subsystems.

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that glaucoma leads to selective deficits in parallel pathways or channels. Sweep VEPs were obtained to isolated-check stimuli that were modulated sinusoidally in either isoluminant chromatic contrast or in positive and negative luminance contrast. Response functions were obtained from 14 control subjects, 15 patients with open-angle glaucoma, and seven glaucoma suspects. For all three groups of subjects we found characteristic differences between the VEP response functions to isoluminant chromatic contrast stimuli and to luminance contrast stimuli. The isoluminant chromatic stimulus conditions appeared to favor activity of the P-pathway, whereas the luminance contrast stimuli at low depths of modulation favored M-pathway activity. VEP responses for patients with OAG were significantly reduced for chromatic contrast and luminance contrast conditions, whereas VEP responses for glaucoma suspects were significantly reduced only for the 15-Hz positive luminance contrast condition. Our results suggest that both M- and P-pathways are affected by glaucoma.

Response latencies to visual stimulation and disparity sensitivity in single cells of the awake Macaca mulatta visual cortex.

The onset response latencies to dynamic random dot figures (solid figures) and dynamic random dot stereograms were measured in single units recorded from areas V1 and V2 of two awake Macaca mulatta monkeys. We studied 56 cells, 39 from V1 and 17 from V2. In 14 disparity sensitive and 13 disparity unsensitive cells from V1 the median latencies to solid figures were 59.8 and 73.6 ms, respectively, which were statistically different. In 26 disparity sensitive cells from V1 and 17 from V2 the median latencies to stereofigures were 85.6 and 97.9 ms, respectively, which were statistically different. These results indicate that V1 disparity sensitive cells may have shorter integration time than disparity unsensitive cells and that there is a transferring delay for disparity information between areas V1 and V2.
