[Results of treatment by rotation in left-sided abomasal displacement (author's transl)].

The results are given of the treatment of thirty cows with left-sided abomasal displacement by rotation, followed by intravenous injection of hypertonic sodium chloride solution and a calcium borogluconate solution. In addition, ammonium chloride was administered orally for a few days. The rations of the animals were gradually restored to normal levels. The purpose was to examine whether recurrences following rotation could be prevented by supplementary measures. Of these thirty animals, five did not respond to treatment because of complications that would otherwise not have reacted favourably to any form of treatment either. Correction of the abomasal displacement was successful in more than 90 per cent (23 animals) of the remaining five cows. However, abomasal displacement recurred in sixteen of these twenty-three animals (70%). Of these fourteen cows, two animals developed an abomasal torsion. It is concluded that the supplementary measures adopted will not prevent recurrences.

[Two cases of tetany in the horse (author's transl)].

Two cases of tetany in the horse are reported. The two patients were thoroughbreds. One was eight and the other thirteen years old. The mares were in heat and were brought to the service (stud) station to be mated. Both patients were nursing a foal. One was a four-week-old foal and the other was seven weeks old. The calcium level of the serum had dropped in the two patients, to 4.0 mg and 5.4 per ml. respectively. The magnesium level was 1.0 mg and 1.9 mg per 100 ml. respectively. The animals responded satisfactorily to intravenous infusion of calcium borogluconate and magnesium chloride. One of the mares was also give 10 1. of physiological saline a few times.

[Usefulness of a modified screening method for the detection of phenol in the saliva in evaluating occupational exposure to this compound].

So far there has not been any quick and simple method to estimate phenol exposure or phenol poisoning directly at the workstation. Our work was aiming at a modification of Lutogniewska's method of determining phenol in the saliva as an indicator of phenol exposure at the workplace. The original method has been improved and modified through essential modification, consisting in a stable borax prealkalization of blotting--paper where the saliva is deposited, which results in a more intense and fast colouring. Apart from original 2,6-dibromchinochlorimid detector, 2,6-dichlorchinochlorimid has been tested. The newly--developed technique has been used in field studies related to 19 workers in one of petrochemical plants and a control group of 40 volunteer students. The proposed method is easy to apply and convenient both for those carrying out the studies and those subjected to them. Nearly in all workers tested, after 6 hours' exposure slight traces of phenol (2 mg/100 ml saliva) have been found in the saliva. On the other hand, in those with no exposure to phenol the test was negative. The method seems to be valuable for the practical use in field studies. The findings of this tentative paper should be checked on more extensive materials.

Analysis for urinary catecholamines by liquid chromatography with amperometric detection: methodology and clinical interpretation of results.

A method is presented for the quantitative analysis of urinary unconjugated norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine as discrete entities. The procedure requires initial purification of the specimen on aluminum oxide and a boric acid-gel. We used "high-performance" reversed-phase paired-ion chromatography, with a flow-through amperometric cell as the detector. The CV was 6% for determination of norepinephrine, 11% for epinephrine, and 6% for dopamine monitored at physiologic concentrations of these compounds in urine. In a population study, urine specimens from 117 normal pediatric and adult subjects, 85 hypertensive patients, and 22 patients with surgically proved pheochromocytoma were analyzed. The specificity of the method for detection of pheochromocytoma was 100%, with a sensitivity of 97%.

Removal of borate from tritiated gangliosides via the mannitoborate complex.

Purified gangliosides were radiolabeled by exposure to sodium boro [3H]hydride in the presence of palladium on barium sulfate. After centrifugation to remove the catalyst, borate was complexed with mannitol and the resulting mannitoborate complex and salts were removed by reversed phase chromatography. The labeled gangliosides were repurified by ion exchange and silica gel chromatographies. Radiopurity was determined by autoradiography of two-dimensional thin-layer chromatograms of the gangliosides. The method eliminates the need for extensive dialysis or repeated methanol evaporations to remove borate thus reducing time and the volume of labeled waste.

[Topical treatment of otorrhea].

A study has been carried out with 167 cases of discharging ears treated topically by means of lavages with a formic solution followed by the instillation of a quantity of boric drops. The material and methods used are exposed, together with the results achieved, taking into account that most the cases had been previously multi-treated with antibiotherapy, with adverse outcome. This procedure is cheap, effective and with scarce side-effects.

Assessment and optimization of kinetic methods for angiotensin-converting enzyme in plasma.

In the kinetic angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) method, a practical and optimal buffer is 80 mmol/L borate buffer at pH 8.2 (37 degrees C). A lag phase is detected in the reaction, and a 5-min incubation of substrate and plasma is suggested before the kinetic measurement. The substrate, N-[3-(2-furyl)acryloyl]-L-phenylalanylglycylglycine (FAPGG), concentration is maximized at 1.0 mmol/L and the measurement wavelength is at 345 nm to ensure linearity of measurement. The proposed procedure uses a 1:9 plasma-to-reagent volume ratio. The linear range of the assay extends to approximately 170 U/L, representing a 25% substrate hydrolysis. The FAPGG absorptivity is determined by measuring the difference in absorbance between 1.0 mmol/L FAPGG and the product solutions. The wavelength fidelity is checked by noting the expected absorbance value of the FAPGG solution, and a 1.0-nm deviation from 345 nm alters the absorbance by 15.5%. The precision of ACE assays at approximately 60 and 100 U/L is 3.5% and 2.4% within batch and 2.9% and 2.6% between batch, respectively. The reference interval (2.5th to 97.5th percentiles) is 41-139 U/L, and there is no difference between values for men and women.

[A case of hemorrhagic inflammation of an external acoustic duct].

We report a case a twenty-year-old male with purpura of his limbs, and acute, diffused inflammation of the skin of the external acoustic duct. Complaints occur in the course of upper respiratory tract infection treated with antibiotic. Administered treatment resulted in quick subsidence of general symptoms with prolonged healing of external acoustic duct requiring surgical debridement (incision, and evaluation of bloody contents).
