[Penicillin-binding proteins of various strains of Lactobacillus].

Sensitivity of different species of Lactobacillus i.e. L. casei, L. plantarum, L. acidophillus, L. buchneri, L. jugurti and others to penicillins and cephalosporins of various generations was studied. Penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) of the Lactobacillus species were specified. It was shown that the number of PBPs depended on the Lactobacillus species. L. casei had the least number of PBPs (4) and L. brevis had the highest number of PBPs (11). Competition of 14C-benzylpenicillin with ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftizoxime and cefoperazone for binding to separate PBPs in three strains of different Lactobacillus species was investigated.

[Antimicrobial activity of orthodontic band cements].

The prevalence of enamel decalcification and caries beneath orthodontic bands, has indicated the need for a new enamel binding adhesive orthodontic cement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity, in vitro, on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus, acidophillus, of three materials used to cements the orthodontic bands. The cements studied were: Zinc phosphate cement, Glass-ionomer cement, and Policarboxylate cement. Thirty petri plates were seeded with S. mutans, and thirty with L. acidophillus; on each plate three pellet were placed, one of each cement studied. Petri plates were incubated under microaerophilic conditions at 37 C, and checked at 72 hrs. for Streptococcus, mutans, and four days for Lactobacillus acidophillus to evaluate the inhibition zone. The results were tabulated for each material. It was demonstrated that exists important variations in the antimicrobial properties of the materials studied, as in the microbial sensitivity to these cements.

[Creating the optimal microecology of the intestines in premature newborn infants with the sour-milk mixture "biphilin"].

The paper is concerned with formation of intestinal biocenosis in premature infants and with approaches to the correction of its disorders with the aid of biphilin, a special mixture prepared from sour milk. Ninety newborns showed the derangement of biocenosis of various intensity by the 6th to the 10th day of life. Application of biphilin for 2 to 6 weeks as part of the multimodality treatment of such children made the intestinal microflora return to normal.

[Increased efficiency in the disinfection of sewage by lactic acid bacteria].

The antimicrobic properties have been studied in 30 strains of lactobacilli. As a result a strain, the strongest antagonist relative to choleric vibrios and other enteropathogenic microorganisms, is selected. Lactobacilli are found to retain their viability and biological activity in the activated sludge during the whole period of observation (6 months). Biological disinfection of sewage is shown possible to be intensified using the activated sludge inoculated by the culture of the selected lactobacilli strain.

[Use of oral bacteria therapy in childhood during acute enteritis and functional chronic diarrhea. Clinical experience].

There are some theoretical reasons to give an oral bacterial therapy when intestinal ecosystem changes its composition. The authors would verify the clinical effectiveness or oral bacterial therapy during acute and functional chronic diarrhea: even if the course of the illness doesn't become shorter, oral bacterial therapy moreover may be useful in reducing the risk of having casual carries of pathogenic agents and may restore an intestinal ecosystem previously modified by antibiotic therapy.

[Microbiological determination of DNA levels in blood leukocytes].

A procedure is developed for estimation of DNA microquantities in biological samples, which involved acid hydrolysis of DNA and the following microbiological estimation of its concentration. A sensitivity of the procedure was as little as 0.25 micrograms DNA per ml. At the DNA concentration 0.25-10 micrograms/ml growth of the indicator strain of bacteria exhibited the linear shape. As shown by means of the procedure developed one rat leukocyte contained 6.3 +/- 0.6 X 10(-12) g of DNA.

[Effect of antibiotics on the adhesive properties of microorganisms and an available model for its study].

The effect of benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, bicillin-3, carbenicillin, levomycetin, erythromycin, streptomycin and kanamycin on the adhesive properties of 9 test microbes including 5 strains of Lactobacillus from human microflora, 3 uropathornic strains of E. coli and 1 strain of S. aureus was studied with the method developed by the authors. The method is based on the use of formalinized human erythrocytes as macroorganism cells. It was shown that the antibiotic inhibitory effect on adhesion depended on mechanism of action of the antibiotics and their concentration, was associated with the level of the microbial adhesion and did not depend on the microbial sensitivity to the drugs.

Bengt E. Gustafsson memorial lecture. Function of the normal human microflora.

The normal human microflora maintains a delicate balance between its constituent parts, numbering 10(11) bacteria per gram with over 400 different species. Certain metabolic functions and enzyme activities can be attributed to the microflora, and these play a role in metabolizing nutrients, vitamins, drugs, endogenous hormones and carcinogens. Our laboratory has studied estrogen and cholesterol metabolism and activation of colon carcinogens. Three techniques to change the flora and its enzymatic activities have been used. Switching the diet from an omnivore diet to a vegetarian diet decreases bacterial deconjugating enzymes in the intestine. Administering antibiotics also suppresses the metabolic activity of the microflora. Similar suppressive effects can be achieved by feeding a human strain of Lactobacillus that implants in the gastrointestinal tract. Manipulation of these various modalities can maximize the beneficial activities of the intestinal microflora.
