Impedance pulmonary arterial pressure(PAP) measuring instrument with a microcomputer was designed and manufactured. It performs the functions of graphic analysis, logic judgment and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) measurement. Impedance information obtained by impedance PAP measuring instrument with a microcomputer was consistent with that by type HB-3COG apparatus. This new instrument has many advantages, such as reliability, saving of time and efforts as well as simplicity in operation.
Rats in which all neocortex had been surgically removed produced similar patterns of performance to those previously established for rabbits with total neocortical ablations in a bar-pressing task for food reward. The animals deprived of neocortex developed inefficient patterns of food-tray related behaviours and a limit to their bar-pressing performance for intermittent rewards in the region of 4-10 presses per reward. The lesioned animals were also unable to form a sequential brightness discrimination on a GO-NOGO schedule using a bar-press response. Neither prior experience of other instrumental learning situations nor experience of working in the same apparatus and using the same instrumental response were sufficient to improve subsequent bar-press performance for intermittent reward in the neocortically lesioned animals. Previous success in improving such performance by pretraining procedures designed to facilitate identification of the part of the apparatus to be manipulated by the animal cannot easily be explained, therefore, on the basis of such incidental factors as increased behavioural sophistication or of increased familiarity with the apparatus and the instrumental response itself. The data are consistent with the view that the neodecorticate's difficulty in the bar-pressing situations for intermittent rewards is due to inadequate identification of cues associated with the object to be manipulated rather than to an associative learning deficit.
The use of high-throughput synthesis and characterization techniques is increasingly prevalent in materials science research. We describe the London University Search Instrument, a research apparatus designed for the high-throughput synthesis and characterization of thick-film sample libraries of ceramic compounds. The instrument is constructed largely from commodity components, which pose particular engineering challenges for achieving the automated operation required for efficient high-throughput experimentation. This paper describes the architecture and implementation of the software system that provides integrated instrument control and data management functions.
Recording reaction forces from primates during behaviors on vertical substrates, such as leaping, climbing, or biting trees, typically requires the design and construction of customized recording devices or mounting commercially available force platforms in a vertical position. The technical difficulties imposed by either option have hindered in vivo research on the kinetics of primate behaviors on vertical substrates. We describe a simple, inexpensive apparatus for recording forces from primate behaviors on vertical substrates. The apparatus includes an instrumented beam fastened directly to a horizontal force platform and a surrounding vertical substrate that does not contact the instrumented beam or platform. The contact piece at the end of the instrumented beam is positioned flush with the noninstrumented vertical substrate, and reaction forces elicited on this instrumented section are directed to the force platform. Because most of the vertical substrate is not instrumented, we can isolate and record forces from a single limb or jaw during a behavior. Biewener and Full ([1992] Biomechanics Structures and Positions: A Practical Approach; New York: Oxford University press, p. 45-73) gave seven criteria to consider when designing a customized force-recording device. Where appropriate, we tested if our apparatus met their criteria. The apparatus accurately records forces in three orthogonal directions, has low cross-talk, maintains a high frequency response, exhibits a linear response up to at least 200 Newtons, and displays a uniform response to a given force across the instrumented contact piece. Our design does not easily facilitate the identification of the point of force application. Therefore, joint moments cannot be easily calculated. This limitation, however, does not affect the apparatus's ability to accurately record the magnitude and direction of a force (as shown by other tests). We developed this apparatus to measure jaw forces during tree gouging in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), but the general design can be readily modified to study a variety of primate behaviors on vertical substrates.

Authors present an apparatus resembling the Cloward instrument, that can be however used more simply and safely for gaining a good quality cortico-spongious cylinder from the iliac wing. The functioning of the bone gaining instrument and the process of bone gaining is described. The apparatus was used in more than 100 cases for filling up with spongious bone chips the cavity arising after the cleaning of the pseudarthrosis of the navicular bone. Three different cases are presented to demonstrate the alternative applications of the apparatus. It is supported by literary data that the autologous bone gained from the iliac wing is the most suitable for transplantation.
We have developed an apparatus for treating spasmodic torticollis that can be used at home both during intensive therapy and follow-up. The refractoriness of spasmodic torticollis requires patients to practice biofeedback training partly on a home basis. However, it is usually difficult for spasmodic torticollis patients to provide and handle electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback training instruments. The present apparatus has 2 parts: first, a harness with a light source which is fixed on both shoulders; second, a photoreceptor, operant system for rewarding effect, and a digital recorder. The light is adjusted to strike the photoreceptor on the forehead when headposition is normal. Subjects are asked to keep the operant system--e.g. a radio--activated. They are trained in various postures as sitting, standing and walking. This apparatus provides a chance of home training to augment and maintain the effect during therapeutic sessions and the follow-up period.
OBJECTIVE: To compare a new dermabrasion instrument equipped with a metal shield and hydration-suction apparatus with the standard instrument, with specific attention to the exposure of operating room personnel to potentially hazardous particles. DESIGN: A surgical trial with each of the instruments was performed with a skin model. The splatter caused by the 2 instruments was evaluated and compared statistically and graphically. SUBJECTS: Female hairless guinea pigs (450 g) were used as a skin model. INTERVENTIONS: Ten guinea pigs were treated with the standard dermabrading instrument, and 10 were treated with a shielded suction-irrigating dermabrader. The splatter was analyzed by counting the number of particles landing on strategically placed glass slides. Evaluations of histologic cross-sections of the dermabraded skin were compared in a blinded fashion. RESULTS: Statistical and graphic analysis showed the number of potentially hazardous particles generated by the suction dermabrader to be significantly less than that generated by the standard dermabrader. Histologic sections showed no difference between the 2 subsets. CONCLUSION: The new shielded suction-irrigating dermabrader provides comparable surgical results while significantly decreasing exposure to potentially hazardous splatter particles.
