[Salivary gland cylindromas. Retrospective study of 65 cases (author's transl)].

A retrospective study of prognostic, clinical, and histological features in 65 cases of salivary gland cylindromas treated in the Hôpital Salpêtrière, Paris, was conducted. Vital prognosis was related to the initial size of the tumour, the presence of pain, and evidence of cellular anomalies or invasion of neighbouring structures on histological examination. Metastatic spread is related to peritumoural extension, and local recurrence has a prognostic value because of its relationship to later metastatic involvement.

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) of the uterine cervix. Histology, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructure in a case, with review of the medical literature].

The authors report a case of adenoid cystic (cylindromatous) carcinoma of the endocervical canal associated with an intraepithelial squamous cell carcinoma of the cervical os in a 60-year-old woman suffering from metrorrhagia. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated labeling of cylindromatous cells with anti-actin, anti-vimentin and anti-keratin antibodies. Ultrastructural study provided significant findings to confirm that the hyaline material surrounded by tumor cells was derived from the remnants of the lamina densa of the basement membrane of tumor lobules. These morphological data are similar to those observed in adenoid cystic carcinomas (cylindromas) of salivary glands. They support the hypothesis that adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cervix may develop from the multipotent reserve cells.

Dermal cylindroma. An immunohistochemical study of thirteen cases.

Thirteen dermal cylindromas (DC) have been studied immunohistochemically using a panel of antibodies that stain different portions of normal eccrine and apocrine glands. Distinct staining patterns were found in the different cell populations of the tumor. Although the expression of cytokeratins (CK) 19 and 1/10/11 in occasional duct structures could indicate excretory (ductal) differentiation, a link between DC and apocrine secretory coil is suggested by the expression of alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, lysozyme, human milk factor globulin 1, alpha smooth muscle actin (1A4), and CK 8 and 18. The presence of intermingled S-100 protein-, HLA DR-, and CD1a-positive cells argues for the existence of Langerhans cells within the neoplasm. DC shares epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, mucin-like carcinoma-associated antigen (B12), laminin, collagen IV, fibronectin, and CD34(QBEND/10) expression with both eccrine and apocrine glands.

[Tracheobronchial cylindroma. Success after left pneumonectomy and plastic repair of a large right tracheobronchial break with a musculo-pleural pedicle and bone graft around a temporary Dumont prosthesis].

A 54-year-old woman with a cylindroma of the lower trachea underwent exploration with dissection of the tracheobronchial junction. The main left bronchus was invaded and there was major tissue loss of membranous tracheo-bronchial substance. Histology showed both tracheal and bronchial involvement. Left pneumonectomy was performed and a Dumon prosthesis was installed on the right. The prosthesis was enveloped in a musculopleural plasty reinforced with a vone graft. Good air flow was established immediately allowing secondary reconstruction of a perfectly functional neobronchus. Outcome was quite favorable with a 3 year follow-up.
