Lung cancer in the elderly is an active cancer. Due to the poor tolerance of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and the ever increasing life expectancy of patients over the age of 70 years, surgery remains the treatment of choice for these lesions. We report a series of 193 patients over the age of 70 years, the high postoperative mortality of 19% during the first month was counterbalanced by a 5-year survival of more than 20%. The criteria of operability must be rigorous and based on objective elements, especially lung function and the patient's good psychological state.
A follow-up study of 577 San Mateo County residents over 50 years of age who were originally studied in 1948 was carried out. Three hundred fifty still were available for reevaluation. Mortality studies showed a higher death rate in males than in females, in persons of the lower economic levels, and in those with systolic blood pressure of more than 180 mm. of mercury. Correlations between factors studied and morbidity were not conclusive, but suggested relationships between low economic status and digestive system disease; low hemoglobin and high incidence of respiratory disease; high caloric intake and digestive system disease; low thiamine intake and nervous system disease; low ascorbic acid intake and diseases of the circulatory and digestive systems.
Environmental factors are important mediators of many diseases of the digestive system, defined as the alimentary tract and the accessory organs of digestion, the liver and pancreas. In this review, we principally focus on the action of chemical agents which are classified as (1) naturally occurring compounds, (2) occupational hazards, (3) therapeutic drugs, and (4) constituents of substances of abuse. In addition, the putative role of dietary habits in the pathogenesis of malignant diseases of the digestive system is discussed.
Serum concentrations of CA 19-9, CA 125 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in 145 patients with gastrointestinal carcinomas and 89 with non-neoplastic diseases were determined to compare the clinical usefulness of these tumour markers. Significantly fewer positive cases were obtained with serum CA 19-9 (9%) and CA 125 (8%) tests than the CEA test (22%) (both p less than 0.05) in patients with benign diseases, while comparable sensitivities were achieved with the CA 19-9 (44%) test, the CA 125 (41%) test and the CEA test (47%) in those with a carcinoma. High incidences of raised concentrations of serum CA 19-9 and CA 125 were observed in case of cancer of the pancreas (CA 19-9: 87%, CA 125: 67%) and biliary tract (CA 19-9: 63%, CA 125: 48%). Combined tests of CA 19-9 and CA 125 revealed increments in the sensitivity (61%) and provided a higher specificity (87%) than that of the single CEA test (78%). These combined tests were most useful for a differential diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma (97% positive) and biliary tract carcinoma (74%) from chronic pancreatitis (4%) and cholelithiasis (0%), respectively. Studies on the relations of clinical staging and serum concentrations of CA 19-9 and CA 125 revealed significant rises in cases of disseminated carcinoma. These results clearly show that serum CA 19-9 and CA 125 tests are most pertinent for diagnosing advanced carcinomas of organs in the digestive system.
We have surveyed a population size of 6633315 from Diseases Surveillance Points (DSP) system in Gansu province for the last eleven years. The annual birth rate was 18.20% with an annual standard mortality rate 545.80/10(5). The annual standard mortality for male and female were 607.53/10(5) and 483.29/10(5) respectively. The major causes of death were Respiratory system diseases, Cardiovascular diseases, Neoplasms, Injuries, Digestive system diseases, Pediatric diseases, Infectious diseases in sequence. In eleven years, there seemed to be a rising trend in the mortalities of following diseases as: Cerebrovascular diseases, Ischemic heart diseases, Rheumatic fever and heart disease, Lung Cancer, Liver Cancer, Cancer of the Esophagus, Intestinal cancer, Cervical cancer, Injury, Congenital abnomalities, to different degrees. However, an obvious descending trend on the morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases was moticed. The average life expectancy was 71.05 years in DSP, with male 69.57 years, and female 72.72 years. Diseases with higher PYLL were Injuries, Neoplasms, Respiratory system diseases and the like. Data suggested not only the prevention andcontrol of infectious diseases, but also the surveillance of injuries and the prevention and control of chronic diseases should be strengthened.

The present paper describes spontaneous pathological findings including etiological aspects in digestive tracts of kangaroos, which have been detected in 166 necropsies during the last 20 years. Protozoan - infections, herpes virus infections, gastroenteritis of unknown etiology and especially the occurrence of the so called "lumpy-jaw" turned out to be of special importance. These findings are discussed with reference to the literature, completed as well by short literature reviews, sub-divided into the different organs and the variable etiology of the diseases, as by a brief description of digestive tract physiology and anatomy in marsupials.

Long-term results of 724 hemorrhoidectomies were followed up from 6 months till 7 years. Various complications after operation were revealed in 172 (23.3%) patients. In 46 (26.7%) patients the failures were associated with unrecognized proctological diseases before operation, in 51 (30%)--with removal of hemorrhoids and in 63 (36.6%) patients the concomitant diseases of other organs and systems were the causes of complications.
