Estimation of the degree of crystallinity of cefazolin sodium by X-ray and infrared methods.

The pentahydrate (alpha form) of cefazolin sodium (CEZ) exhibited sharp X-ray diffraction peaks, while the dehydrated alpha form showed weak but distinct diffraction peaks. As expected the amorphous form exhibited a diffuse and halo diffraction pattern. The X-ray procedure to estimate the degree of crystallinity of CEZ was based upon the measurement of the total scattering and the scattering from the crystalline region of the drug. The major difference in the infrared (IR) spectra among the three forms of CEZ was the absence of a spectral band at 1542 cm-1 in the amorphous form. The IR procedure was based upon the measurement of the peak percentage area ratio between the bands at 1542 and 1760 cm-1, where the latter was used as a normalizing peak. The degree of crystallinity of CEZ samples, obtained by either freeze-drying aqueous CEZ solutions or storing the crystalline forms under different humidity conditions, was determined by these two methods. Although the correlation of results by the two methods was good, the X-ray procedure appears to be superior since it can differentiate among the three solid CEZ forms, whereas IR could distinguish between only crystalline and amorphous CEZ, reproducibly.

Conformations of A-DNA and B-DNA in agreement with fiber X-ray and infrared dichroism.

Two right handed double helices are proposed as models for DNA fibers in respectively the A and the B form. The present conformations have geometrical parameters which agree very well with fiber X-ray and the orientation of their phosphate groups is in good accordance with infrared dichroïsm measurements. Dihedral angles and complete sets of atomic coordinates are given together with stereo-views and curves of the calculated diffracted intensities. Results are compared with experimental data and with preceding DNA models.

Bamboo charcoal inhibits growth of HeLa cells in vitro.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the far infrared spectral characteristics of bamboo charcoal powder and its effect on cancer cells for use in the dental field. To analyze the effects of the powder, HeLa and WI-38 cells were used and then assessed by cell adhesion assay and WST-1 assay. The powder emitted far infrared rays at wavelengths between 4 to 16 microm. The multiplication rate of WI-38 cells showed no significant differences between the conventional culture (control group) and culture on the powder (FIR group). However, at six days after incubation, HeLa cells of FIR group had a significantly lower multiplication rate compared with the control group. Based on the far infrared rays emitted in this study, bamboo charcoal powder proved to be a promising dental filler material for cancer prevention.

[A simply designed apparatus and its use for measuring vertical and horizontal motor activities in methamphetamine-treated mice].

A simple apparatus using the infrared ray, which can divide spontaneous motor activity (SMA) of mice into two behavioral components, a vertical movement (VM) and a horizontal movement (HM) was designed. VM and HM were evaluated by counting the number of times that infrared rays were blocked by the mouse in the activity cage [300(H) X 260(D) X 130(W) mm] with 9 infrared photo-couplers for measuring VM and one infrared photo-coupler for measuring HM. When methamphetamine (MAM) was subcutaneously administered to mice pretreated with saline (0.1 ml/10 g, sc) for 3 days, VM and HM were as follows: 1) At 0.1 mg/kg of MAM, the same level of activity was observed as with saline. 2) At 1.0 mg/kg of MAM, increased activity was noted. 3) At 10 mg/kg of MAM, a marked increase was noted, showing more enhancement of HM than VM, which had developed into a stereotyped behavior. In summary, this new apparatus was found capable of dividing the SMA of mice into the two behavioral patterns of VM and HM, and providing their measurements.

[An infrared photocoagulative technic in the prevention of hemorrhagic complications in oral medicine].

The infrared ray clotting technique has been successfully employed in numerous branches of medicine and surgery. Here its usefulness is demonstrated in dentistry, particularly in the treatment of haemorrhagic complications in oral and extractive surgery in patients suffering from clotting disturbances. The physical features of infrared radiation make it possible to perform a targeted, instantaneous tissue necrosis of depth proportional to exposure time. Its speed, simplicity and effectiveness make infrared ray clotting the haemostatic intervention of choice in every single event.

[Crystallography of 804 renal calculi].

We analyse a total of 804 kidney stones in 225 patients aged between 10 and 71 years, with an average age of around 45, by means of the following techniques: optico-differential analysis (immersion method, PRIEN and FRONDEL, 1947), fine plate, X-ray diffraction, infrared-ray spectroscopy and qualitative chemical analysis. In all the stones, we identify the composition of the nucleus and periphery separately. Our results give 51.32% of patients forming essentially oxalic stones, 28.31% uric ones, 19.46% phosphatic and 0.44% cystine stones. These statistics coincide quite closely with those obtained by Cifuentes (quot. in Dalet, F.; Pinto, B., 1976) in Madrid and differ a little more from those obtained by the Puigvert Foundation (quot. in Dalet, F.; Pinto, B., 1976) in Barcelona. They are also similar to those obtained by Sutor (1974) for non Anglo-Saxon, industrialized countries, such as Czechoslovakia and Kuwait. We identify the following components in this collection of stones: anhydrous uric acid, dihydrate uric acid, amorphous urates (sodic, ammonic), whewellite, wedellite, hydroxyapatite, carbo-apatite, struvite, newberyte, whitlockite, brushite and cystine. We found no xanthine stone.

Identification and differentiation between colored pencils.

With pencils of any color, the first step certainly involves visual examination to distinguish between the color tints and to study the quality of the stroke itself. In many instances by this step alone, 2 pencils can be distinguished if they are the product of 2 different manufacturers. In other words, the most useful of all tests is the visual examination. In the case of red pencils, infrared luminescence reveals significant information and should be resorted to in those instances where two questioned strokes are extremely similar. Study under ultraviolet radiation may also help to establish similarities or differences which are not readily discernible by visual examination. However, reflected infrared examination and study with dichroic filters have no particular value when dealing with red pencil although chemical spot testing may be of some assistance. In the case of blue pencils, a number of brands absorbs infrared radiation to a different extent and some give off distinctive infrared luminescence, so that these 2 tests can assist in distinguishing between certain similar colors or tints. Also, study through dichroic filters has value. Thus, the combination of these 3 tests can be of some advantage, but in most instances, particularly with dark blues, examination under ultraviolet radiation is not particularly helpful. Chemical spot testing has some limited advantages but generally only in combination with all other tests. In the case of green pencils, the same pattern of testing may be used as with blues. Many of the greens absorb infrared rays and some have bright infrared luminescence. Ultraviolet radiation can cause certain greens to fluoresce in a distinctive way. Thus, with each color studied, differences can be revealed and similarities established. Colored pencils are a distinct group of writing instruments. Within any color classification, there is a variety of shades or tints. Although it is not psosible to determine the make of pencil used in any particular writing, it is possible under many circumstances to distinguish between the work of different makes and grades of red, blue and green pencils, as well as other colors which have not been covered by this paper. While visual examination will separate the many different makes, other tests are described which will further assist in grouping or separating colored writing strokes. For a number of reasons, and particularly because of manufacturing procedures of different companies, not every make of pencil is distinctive, but there has been found to be a definite variety within each color group, and many makes are distinguishable.

Conformations of C-DNA in agreement with fiber X-ray and infrared dichroism.

Different left handed double helices are proposed as models for DNA fibers in the C form. These conformations have geometrical parameters which agree well with fiber X-ray data and the orientations of their phosphate groups are in good agreement with infrared dichroism results. A complete set of atomic coordinates and dihedral angles are given together with curves of calculated diffracted intensities. The present results are compared with experimental values and with the other C-DNA models.

[The effect of infrared laser rays on herpes simplex virus and the functions of human immunocompetent cells].

In vitro investigations were performed to study the effect of infrared Nd:YAG laser irradiation on herpes simplex virus and the viral replication in herpes-infected Vero cell microcultures. In addition, the influence of laser irradiation on human immuncompetent cells was investigated by irradiation and incubation of herpes-infected cell cultures overlaid with leucocytes and observation of leucocyte migration under agarose after laser irradiation. There was no evidence of herpes simplex virus inactivation by laser irradiation. Irradiation of Vero cell microcultures infected with virus did not influence the development of the viral cytopathic effect. However, irradiated cultures showed an increase of about 50% in the virus yield. Only a slight indication of laser influence on immunocompetent cells was found. Cell cultures incubated with leucocytes (from both seropositive and seronegative donors) and irradiated showed an inhibitory effect with about half the virus yield seen in unirradiated controls. However, there was no relation between the energy applied and yield reduction. In addition, laser light caused no change in leucocyte migration.
