We present a method for the speciation of chromium by capillary electrophoresis. Cr(III) was complexed with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to form a negatively charged complex. Using 20 mM phosphate buffer of pH 8 containing 0.5 mM tetradecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (TTAOH) at a separation voltage of -15 kV, both forms of chromium CrDTPA(2-) and CrO(4) (2-) were separated in less than 6 min. Direct UV detection at 214 nm was used. The effect of the presence of interfering ions was investigated. The application of the developed method to speciation of chromium in tanning liquor is demonstrated. The obtained results have shown a good correlation with those of flame atomic absorbance spectrometry (FAAS), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and UV/VIS spectrophotometry.
As part of the WHO/International League Against Rheumatism (ILAR) sponsored community organized programme for the control of rheumatic disease (COPCORD), an arthritis community education programme (ACE) was undertaken utilizing the traditional form of entertainment in a rural area in Central Java-the wayang. The point prevalence rate of musculoskeletal complaints was estimated in 4683 men & women aged 15 years and over by house-to-house interviews. From 1105 respondents recording recent musculoskeletal pain, 844 were randomly selected and half the latter attended a puppet shadow play (wayang) incorporating the ACE. The other half, matched for age, sex and educational level who did not see the play, served as controls. A questionnaire containing biphasic choices of correct or incorrect ways of performing activities of daily living (ADL) to minimize musculoskeletal problems was administered to the whole group before, 1 month and 6 months after the wayang. Increased knowledge of correct ways of performing ADL (correct ADL) in the intervention group compared with the control group at 1 and 6 months after wayang was significant (P less than 0.05). Comprehension of correct ADL following the wayang could be demonstrated even in subjects who were illiterate and those who had attended primary school only. Retention of knowledge at the 6 month assessment declined more markedly in the illiterate group. ACE by wayang was shown to be feasible and effective in transferring knowledge on ADL to people with musculoskeletal problems in the sample population in Java. This effect could be shown even in the poorly educated section of the community.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

BACKGROUND: Although urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common nosocomial infection, active UTI surveillance is often not feasible for infection control departments. METHODS: As part of an ongoing urinary catheter evaluation, we investigated the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of using handheld personal digital assistants (PDA) and computer-based UTI surveillance in comparison with traditional surveillance of UTIs among medical intensive care unit (MICU) patients. From September 22, 2000, to October 22, 2000, an infection control practitioner (ICP) actively surveyed all MICU patients who had a urinary catheter to determine criteria for a nosocomial UTI as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Research assistants visited the unit each day to determine which patients had urinary catheters, and this information was uploaded to a database designed for laboratory-based UTI surveillance. Patients with a urinary catheter were included if admitted to the MICU for >48 hours and excluded if symptoms developed <48 hours after admission. RESULTS: Both data collection methods identified 8 UTIs within the 1-month period, with 3 UTIs meeting inclusion criteria. Traditional surveillance required 8 hours weekly, whereas the PDA-computer surveillance required 1-and-a-half hours weekly. Traditional surveillance correctly attributed all 3 UTIs to the MICU. The PDA-computer surveillance incorrectly attributed the location of 2 of the UTIs. In both cases, the UTI occurred less than 48 hours after the patient was transferred from the MICU. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that PDA surveillance detects nosocomial UTIs efficiently and is a novel, timesaving technique that realizes a cost savings in the first year.
The possible use of pre-fleshing wastes from tanneries in the production of biodiesel fuel was examimed in our previous study in 2005. In this study, engine performance and emission values of biodiesel obtained from these wastes have been investigated and compared to petrodiesel fuel. The test results demonstrated that although the wheel force and power of biodiesel fuel is slightly lower than petrodiesel and the acceleration periods are accordingly longer, the emission values of hydrocarbons and particulate matter were found to be considerably lower with biodiesel. Thus, it has been shown that a waste byproduct can be utilized in the production of an environmentally friendly fuel, which can be used in some diesel engines without a need for major adjustment, providing economic and ecological benefits.
