[Effect of a decoction of six ingredients with rehmannia on the periodontal tissues of animals with kidney diseases].

In this paper, Kidney Yin and Yang deficiency animal models were made by the medicine (hydrocortisone, thyroxin). At the same time the occlusal trauma was accompanied. It was caused by means of corprophagy (microorganism) fed and artificial damage. The authors observed the injuries and effects of the local and systemic factors caused on the periodontal tissues of rats. From the experiment the authors found the injuries of the periodontal tissues in Kidney deficiency models were severer than those of the models without Kidney deficiency. The results showed that the function of the traditional medicine was a matter of protection, regeneration and repairing to the periodontal tissues of Kidney Yin deficiency models. In addition, the weights and activities of the experimental animals fed by Decoction of Six Ingredients with Rehmannia were higher than those without taking the traditional medicine.

[Influence of yang-restoring herb medicines upon metabolism of thyroid hormone in normal rats and a drug administration schedule].

Large dose of Yang-restoring herb medicines. (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Astragalus membranaceus, Radix Aconiti Praeparata, Epimedium brevicornum, Cortex Cinnamomi and Herba Cistanchis) may exert an unfavorable effect on normal rats, i. e. natural weight gain reduced (P less than 0.01), serum T3 decreased (P less than 0.05), rT3, TRH levels raised (P less than 0.01) and TSH showed a raising tendency. Lower T3 and higher rT3 levels may be the effects of Yang-restoring herb medicines on the peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones, i. e. more thyroxine was degraded to rT3 with little biological effect and less was transformed to T3 with strong hormonal effect. This unfavorable effect, however, can be avoided by Forward-Backward method. It was advised that large dose of Yang-restoring herb medicines could not be given to the organisms without symptoms of Yang-deficiency. If it were tried to do so, Forward-Backward method might be recommended.

[Study on treatment of retinitis pigmentosa with traditional Chinese medicine by Flicker electroretinogram].

Study on treatment of 54 patients (106 eyes) of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) with traditional Chinese medicine was conducted by using modified method of electroretinography. Results showed: (1) Flicker response of electroretinogram was the most sensitive-criterion in examination, it was more effective when combined with infrared spectrogram. (2) The 30 Hz flicker index, response time were improved after TCM therapy in different hereditary types of RP, the improvement was significant in patients with Yang-Deficiency of Spleen-Kidney Syndrome and those of autosomal dominant inheritance type (P < 0.01). (3) Decrease of phase angle (phi) under different frequency of flicker after treatment was also significant statistically. The results suggested that flicker responses, which represents mainly retinal cone activity of patients, could be improved to a certain extent by TCM treatment, even in those with advanced retinal degeneration. TCM treatment could also enhance the bioactivity of nerve network and therefore have a definite significance in retarding the progression of disease and keeping the central vision. The flicker ERG, especially its flicker index, is an effective, sensitive and useful parameter for detection of visual function in patient with retinitis pigmentosa.

[Immunological change in pigmentary degeneration of retina and its relation to traditional Chinese medicine differentiation of syndromes].

Using monoclonal antibody technique, T lymphocyte cell subgroups, immunoglobins, complements, and circulating immune complexes (CIC) were measured in 60 patients with pigmentary degeneration of retina (RP) and 40 normal subjects. The results indicated that T1, T4, T8, C3 and C4 of the patients were lower than those of the controls; T4/T8, IgM and CIC of the patients were more than those of the controls. The differences between the patients and the controls were remarkably significant. Similarly, by investigating the objective quota of TCM differentiation of syndromes, the authors divided the RP patients into Liver-Kidney deficiency of Yin and Spleen-Kidney deficiency of Yang groups, and compared them with normal subjects. The results indicated that the two groups underwent similar change of immunology. But they had their own characteristics. The Yin-deficiency group showed remarkable increase of T4/T8 and normal T4; the Yang-deficiency group showed remarkable reduction of T1 and reduction of T4.

[Studies on chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of the stem of Cynomorium songaricum Rupr].

OBJECTIVE: In order to exploit the medicinal resources and provide a scientific evidence for the clinical use and quality of Cynomorium songaricum control, the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of the stem of the plant were studied preliminarily. METHOD: The chemical constituents were studied by spectral analysis and chemical method. The pharmacological effects were studied by an experiment on the defecation and deficiency of kidney function. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: Seven compounds were isolated from the stem of C. songaricum and identified as beta-sitosterol(I), palmitic acid (II), ursloic acid (III), daucosterol (IV), (-)-catechin (VI), naringenin-4'-O-pyranogluoside (VII) and succinicyacid (XII). Compounds VI and XII were isolated from this species for the first time. The pharmacological results show that the different extracts facilitate catharsis and replenish the deficiency of kidney yang.

[Long-term changes in the different types of coronary diseases treated with traditional Chinese and Western medicine].

64 cases with TCM differential types of CHD treated with TCM-WM in long term (an average of 10.5 years) were divided into four types according to deficiency of Yang [including weakness of Q1], deficiency of Yin, blood stasis and disorder of Qi and phlegm. Compared with pre-treatment 42 cases (65.62%) with TCM differential types showed improvement or no change in group I, II (clinical total effective rate 92.86%, the significantly effective rate 40.98%). While 22 cases (34.38%) with TCM differential type became aggravated or worse (clinical total effective rate 54.54%, the significantly effective rate 13.63%). The report indicated that the results in comparing group I, II with group III, IV were statistically significant; age (P less than 0.01), course of disease (P less than 0.01), impairment of myocardium (P less than 0.05), complication (P less than 0.05), ratio of deficiency of Yang (P less than 0.01), blood stasis (P less than 0.01) and high coagulation of blood (P less than 0.01). Therefore the author suggests that it is necessary to protect Yang-Qi and prevent and treat the complication of the CHD patients.

[Study of the relation of the typology of nephrotic syndrome and red cell C3b receptor, T cell function].

This paper reports the determined results of rosette rates of red cell C3b receptor and active rosette (Ea) rates of T lymphocyte in 39 cases of nephrotic syndrome. Typology of nephrotic syndrome according to TCM differentiation symptoms, all the 39 cases were divided into three types: (1) 13 cases of deficiency of Qi of the Spleen with stagnancy of dampness; (2) 9 cases of deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney; (3) 17 cases of deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney. The results showed that the red cell C3b receptor rosette rate and Ea rosette rate in 39 cases of nephrotic syndrome were significantly lower than those in the control. The difference between the two groups was very obvious (P less than 0.001) among the three types. The rosette rates of both in the deficiency of Qi of the Spleen and deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney were markedly decreased than those in the control (P less than 0.001). Whereas, the red cell C3b receptor rosette rate was lower than that in the control (P less than 0.01), and T cell Ea rosette rate showed no statistical difference (P greater than 0.05) in the deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney. There was a close relationship between the immune dysfunction of red cell and the pathogenesis in nephrotic syndrome. There was markedly relationship between the pathogenesis of deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney and deficiency of Qi of Spleen with stagnancy of dampness and T cell immune dysfunction. While the Ea level in deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney was closely correlated with the control. Probably this type was nephrotic nephrosis which had been treated with TCM-WM.

[Study on TCM syndrome differentiation rules in coronary artery bypass grafting patients during peri-operation period].

OBJECTIVE: To study the TCM syndrome differentiation rules in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients during peri-operation period. METHODS: According to the Guideline for Clinical Trail of Traditional Chinese New Drugs and experience of Professor DENG Tie-tao, the standard of TCM syndrome differentiation for CABG patients was established, with which 161 CABG patients were classified before and two weeks after CABG operation. RESULTS: Before CABG, the qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome type was the type most commonly seen (46.0%), the next in turn was the phlegm stagnation type (24.8%), the yang-qi deficiency type (15.5%), and the yin-blood deficiency type (13.7%). While after CABG, the phlegm stagnation syndrome type was the most frequently occurred one (35.9%), then in turn was the yang-qi deficiency type (30.8%), the yin-blood deficiency type (21.2%) and the qi stagnation with blood stasis type (12.2%). CONCLUSION: For patients before CABG, the pathological characteristic is mostly the deficiency in root with excess in superficiality, and the commonest syndrome is the qi stagnation with blood stasis type. For patients after CABG, both deficiency and excess is the pathological characteristic, the Xin-qi and Xin-yang deficiency syndrome the commonest type, and with phlegm as the main pathologic factor.

[Relationship between lipometabolic disorder in stroke with TCM syndrome differentiation and typing].

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the relationship between lipometabolic disorder in stroke with TCM Syndrome Differentiation and Typing. METHODS: The serum lipid, lipoprotein and apo-lipoprotein level of TCM treated group (142 cases) and control group (100 cases) were determined. The patients were subdivided into three Type-groups according to TCM Syndrome Differentiation: Phlegm-Dampness Stagnation (PDS), Yin Deficiency with Yang Hyperactivity (YDYH) and Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis (QDBS) group. RESULTS: The results showed that the level of TC, TG, HDL, LDL, apoA1, apoB and apoA1/apoB were significantly different in PDS and QDBS as compared with control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively), while lipometabolic disorder of PDS was most serious in TCM Syndrome Differentiation of stroke. The level of TG, apoA1/apoB were significantly different in YDYH in comparing with control group (P < 0.05). While the level of TC, HDL, LDL and apoB were insignificantly different than those of control group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that lipometabolic disorder of stroke were correlated with Syndrome Differentiation of TCM. Stroke with PDS and QSBS should give removing Phlegm-Dampness, dredging Meridian and removing blood stasis treatment besides routine treatment.
