[Several parameters of the nutritional status of indigenous population of Far North].

Presented are the results of nutrition status of 803 inhabitants of Yakutia both sexes at the age from 20 to 50. 22 per cent of examined men and 42 per cent of examined women had redundant body mass. It relates to high caloric diet and unbalance between consumption and expense of energy. High caloric diet is a cause of hypercholesterinemia and hypertriglyceridemia among young and old people. The most part of residents had insufficiency of vitamin C and beta-carotene in winter. It relates to deficit of fruit and vegetables in diet. 8 per cent of examined men and 30 per cent of examined women had low level of hemoglobin. Thus, rational nutrition is necessary for prophylaxis diseases in the Far North.

The role of vitamins in hemostasis.

The physiological mechanism to prevent and control abnormal bleeding is dependent on three vitamins (C, K, and Q). Two of these are unequivocally established as essential for hemostasis while the existence of the third (Q) is supported by experimental evidence and by clinical and therapeutic observations (Quick 1972; Quick 1974). The interrelationship of these three vitamins has remained moot except for clue observations. Both vitamins C and K have a key structure in their molecules which supplies a redox mechanism, ascorbic acid and 2-methyl, 1,4-naphthoquinone, respectively. Both vitamins are concerned with growth. Lack of vitamin C, which clinically is the basic defect of scurvy, does not appear to cause a defect in blood coagulation while vitamin K affects the clotting mechanism by being essential for the production of four distinct clotting factors: prothrombin, factors VII, IX and X. In this presentation an attempt is made to correlate the action of the vitamin K-dependent clotting factors grouping them in a diagram to show how two systems of thrombin formation exist, one being essentially intrinsic, the second extrinsic requiring tissue thromboplastin and factor VII. The possible interlocking of vitamin Q in this mechanism is presented.

[Antioxidant status of inhabitants of Yakutia].

Presented are the results of antioxidant status of inhabitants of Yakutia. The intensity of lipid peroxydation depends on professional factors: influence of the quartz dust and smoking. Miners and smokers have high concentration of malonil dialdegide in blood. The SOD and catalase levels did not statistically depend on sex and nationality, but increased in miners and smokers. Insufficiency of vitamins C, A and E combined with immunoglobulins deviations. It should be noticed that country-people have more deviations in vitamin and immune status than towns-people.

Effect of diet on the metabolism and toxicology of drugs.

The human organism is continuously exposed to a variety of xenobiotics, as drugs, pesticides, food additives and many environmental contaminants, all of which are potentially toxic. The body metabolizes these highly reactive chemicals to pharmacologically-inert compounds, which are readily eliminated from the body. This process of deactivation is dependent on nutritional status. Malnutrition, almost invariably, leads to a reduced capacity to deactivate these exogenous materials with consequent increase in toxicity.

[Influence of occupational dusts load on state of antioxidant system in miners engaged in diamond extraction industry].

Miners of diamond extraction industry in Yakutia demonstrated higher intensity of lipid peroxidation. Longstanding compensatory adaptive response to increased free radical oxidation and to unfavorable climate factors is higher superoxide dismutase and catalase and changes in protein metabolism. Lack of C and E vitamins in miners results from increased utilization due to strain of antioxidant defence mechanisms.

Is there an association between edentulism and nutritional state?

Edentulous people have difficulty chewing foods that are hard or tough in texture, even when wearing well-made dentures. These individuals typically modify their diets to compensate for loss of oral function. This practice leads to the question of whether the diet of edentulous individuals is adequate to maintain good general health. This overview summarizes articles that describe the changes in diet associated with edentulism. Such changes include reductions in fruits, vegetables, meats and other hard-to-chew foods and are associated with compromised nutrition. The evidence suggests that edentulous individuals lack specific nutrients and, as a result, may be at risk for various health disorders. The authors have recently shown that mandibular prostheses supported by only 2 implants may significantly improve nutritional status in edentulous patients.
