Pilocarpine and narrow-angle glaucoma.

Fifty normal eyes underwent a provocative test with pilocarpine 4 per cent. Slit-image photography before and 30 minutes after the instillation of pilocarpine 4 per cent into one eye demonstrated the range of response of the anterior segment to pilocarpine. Those eyes whose axial anterior chamber depth shallowed by greater than or equal to 0.1 mm demonstrated shallowing of the periphery of the anterior chamber, while those eyes whose axial anterior chamber depth shallowed by less than 0.1 mm showed deepening of the peripheral anterior chamber. The relevance of these findings to the development of peripheral anterior synechiae is discussed.

[Corneal pigmentation after removal of the eye in Rana temporaria L. larvae].

Pigmentation of the cornea has been studied in the Rana temporaria larvae at the 22d-27th stages of development macroscopically (total corneal preparations with the surrounding skin) and microscopically. Dynamics of the pigment cells transfer that fill the transparent cornea is compared to the histological rearrangement of the latter. The corneal pigmentation is demonstrated to occur with a constant velosity and is well described by means of the linear regression equation. At initial stages of transformation, the corneal pigmentation overtakes the histological processes, then the two processes run in parallel and only towards the metamorphosis period the corneal histological changes slightly overtake the pigmentation process. As a whole, the pigment cells arrangement demonstrates the transformation degree of the external corneal into the skin after the eye has been extirpated. A suggestion is made explaining the necessity of a constant inducing retinal influence on the skin in Anura larvae.

Limbal palisades of Vogt.

The palisades of Vogt are distinctive normal features of the human corneoscleral limbus. Our clinical studies indicate that they are more discrete in younger and in more heavily pigmented individuals, and that they appear more regular and prominent at the lower limbus than at the upper limbus. They are seen only infrequently in the horizontal meridian. There is some symmetry (though it is not exact) from one eye to the other in the same person. The anatomy of the palisades appears to be unique for a given individual. In this respect, as well as in their microscopic anatomy, the palisades of Vogt appear comparable to fingerprints, and the term "conjunctivoglyphics" ("conjunctival carvings") or "limboglyphics" is suggested in analogy with "dermatoglyphics." The palisades of Vogt have a distinct vasculature with narrow, barely visible, arterial and venous components of radially oriented hairpin loops. Angiography reveals that these vessels leak fluorescein relatively late and only to a moderate extent. They respond to inflammation by dilatation and gross breakdown of their physiologic barrier properties. The functions of the palisades of Vogt are not known with certainty, but their interpalisadal epithelial rete ridges may serve as a repository for corneal epithelial cells. They may thus be important in both aging and diseases of the cornea.

Allophenic mice in cleft-palate investigations.

T1Wh (Rb (5;19)1Wh), an albino strain of mice not previously used in the investigation of cleft palate (CP), is homozygous for a (5;19) Robertsonian translocation which provides conspicuous chromosomal markers. Preliminary studies in this laboratory revealed that CP is induced in all the offspring of T1Wh females treated with 2.5 mg of cortisone acetate on days 11-14 of pregnancy and that palatal closure is accomplished at a later morphological and chronological age than in C57BL/6J strain mice. The latter strain had a CP frequency of 42% under similar experimental conditions. Eight- to 16-cell embryos were aggregated in the following combinations: T1Wh in equilibrium T1Wh, C57BL/6J in equilibrium C57BL/6J and T1Wh in equilibrium C57BL/6J. The resulting allophenic blastocysts were transferred to pseudopregnant C57BL/6J recipients which were given the above cortisone treatment and killed on the 18th day of pregnancy. CP was found in all of the 48 T1Wh in equilibrium T1Wh fetuses, 4 (20%) of of 20 C57BL/6J in equilibrium C57BL/6J fetuses and in 17 (26.2%) of 65 T1Wh in equilibrium C57BL/6J fetuses. Analysis of chromosome preparations from the palates of the T1Wh in equilibrium C57BL/6J fetuses demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between the presence of CP and the percentage of susceptible cells in the palate (P less than 0.02). Other data suggest a possible growth advantage in favor of C57BL/6J cells in the palates of T1Wh in equilibrium C57BL/6J allophenic mice.

Vitreous fluorophotometry: identification of sources of variability.

Slit-lamp vitreous fluorophotometry (VF) has been used by several investigators to document the early breakdown of the blood-ocular barrier. After an injection of fluorescein, levels of fluorescein in the vitreous humor are reported to be elevated in diabetic patients compared with controls even when there is no retinal pathologic condition discernible by angiography or ophthalmoscopy. We have examined the technique of VF in normal persons and have identified several potential sources of error in the determination of vitreous fluorescein levels. Fluorescein in the choroidal circulation significantly influences VF readings taken at the retinal surface and in the posterior vitreous. This effect is modulated by ocular pigmentation, with heavy pigmentation of dark-eyed normals more effectively screening out choroidal fluorescence than the light pigmentation of blue-eyed subjects. Influence of choroidal fluorescein extends toward the midvitreous, and the range of influence is directly related to the slit width of the exciting light. At narrow slit widths the effect is diminished but can never be completely eliminated. Blood fluorescein levels decrease with time, and since choroidal fluorescein contributes to VF values, the time after injection that VF reading are taken is a critical parameter.

Physical anthropology of Tarahumara Indians of northern Mexico.

During an anthropological mission in northern Mexico, 108 individuals of both sexes, belonging to the ethnic group of Tarahumara of the district of Norogachi were examined. Anthropometric characters and some physiological and medical data were taken. In this paper our anthropometric data are compared with those of the same population, taken in 1898 by Hrdlicka and in 1925-26 by Basauri. Thus it results that their cephalic index increased, while the reduction of their bizygomatic diameter shows a process of slenderization (according to Debetz). From a physiological point of view it is interesting to observe the high percentage of tasters of P.T.C. lowest concentration, the absence of evident dischromatopsies, the presence of a moderate eosinophilia probably due to parasitosis. Finally, it is opportune to observe the presence of blood in the urine of 15.7% of males, probably connected with a cultural factor, that is kick-ball foot race on long distances.
