Of the 6,067 malignant laryngeal tumors treated at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinical Hospitals in Yugoslavia, a total of 20 were sarcoma. Eighteen of these patients were men. The most frequent forms were chondrosarcoma and fusocellular sarcoma - four cases of each. A survival rate of more than five years was seen in only four patients (one fibrosarcoma, two lymphosarcomas, and one chondrosarcoma).
The prototypic soft tissue tumor showing "clear" cytoplasmic features is the so-called clear cell sarcoma or malignant melanoma of soft parts, a tumor characterized by immunophenotypic and ultrastructural melanogenic differentiation and specific cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities, ie, t(12;22)(q13;q12) translocation and Ewing's sarcoma oncogene/activating transcription factor 1 rearrangement. A number of other malignant soft tissue tumors occasionally show cytoplasmic clarity, including epithelioid leiomyosarcomas, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and sclerosing fibrosarcomas, as well as metastatic carcinomas and malignant melanomas. These tumors are discussed in relation to their differential diagnosis with clear cell sarcomas.
Feline soft tissue sarcomas are spontaneous, rapidly growing, and aggressive neoplasms that mimic their human counterpart. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of electrochemotherapy (ECT) in an adjuvant fashion for the treatment of feline sarcomas, and the possibility of repeated treatments in the case of recurrence. Cats with fibrosarcoma (FSA) were assigned to receive surgery or surgery plus ECT. Feline patients recruited in the ECT study were enrolled in a microscopic arm (39 patients) or a macroscopic arm (19 patients) on the basis of their tumor status (absence or presence of gross disease). Patients received local injection of bleomycin followed by bursts of eight biphasic pulses at a voltage of 1,300 V/cm for postoperative and of 800 V/cm for intraoperative treatments. The median time to recurrence was 4 months for cats treated with surgery alone, 19 months for the postoperative cohort, and 12 months for the intraoperative group. Moreover, ten patients with recurring neoplasms were retreated and experienced responses lasting 6 to 28+ months. Side effects were minimal. Of interest, the metastatic rate (1.7%) in our patients was negligible: only one cat had distant spread. The results suggest that ECT is a well tolerated and potentially useful addition to surgery in controlling high-grade sarcomas. On the basis of these results, additional evaluations are warranted in pets and in humans.
Our present knowledge about bone tumors is still in need of a convincing cytohistogenetic concept that would support the adequate differentiation and classification of different tumor types. The modern therapeutic approach must rely on subtle diagnostis using preferably cyto- and histomorphologic criteria. The present study depends on a considerable number of malignant and semimalignant bone tumors which were analysed by several modern investigative methods. Based on these results, we intend to find the answers to some problems of cytogenesis and histogenesis of bone tumors. Comparison and correlation of our findings with the results of other authors is attempted with the objective to propose an overall histogenetic concept of bone tumors in consideration of the known data and hypotheses. Our material comprises 85 malignant and semimalignant bone tumors. The following tumor types are discussed on the basis of cases from our collection (numbers in brackets): "Conventional" highly malignant osteosarcoma (32), parosteal and periosteal osteosarcoma (2), telangiectatic osteosarcoma (2), small cell osteosarcoma (1), small cell sclerosing osteosarcoma (2), histiocytic osteosarcoma (1), Ewing's sarcoma (15), "conventional" chondrosarcoma (7), dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma (2), mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (1), giant cell tumor (12), malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone (5), fibrosarcoma of bone (3), The results of conventional light and electron microscopy, but also of enzyme histochemistry and autoradiography were included in the definitive classification by both histologic and cytologic criteria. In addition, different collagen types present in the ground substance of these tumors were studied by immunofluorescence microscopy; in anaplastic tumors of high malignancy the intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton were further subjected to immunohistochemical analysis. The concept resulting from these studies may be briefly summarized as follows: The stem cell of conventional, highly malignant osteosarcoma is a stromal cell of the skeletal system, which is undergoing neoplastic transformation. At first this cell fails to show any sign of collagen synthesis, the activity of alkaline phosphatase is not increased. Of a primarily anaplastic nature, this tumor cell may differentiate in several directions: in osteoblastic differentiation, the cell will produce predominantly collagen type I, and alkaline phosphatase activity will increase. During fibroblastic differentiation we observe an increased synthesis of collagen type III, but alkaline phosphatase activity is not raised.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
Authors operated on 6339 malignant breast tumors at the Department of Surgery, National Institute on Oncology between 1980 and 1994. The records of 14 patients with sarcomas of the breast were analyzed. These included 2 malignant phyllodes tumors, 3 malignant fibrous histiocytomas, 2-2 fibrosarcomas and carcinosarcomas and liposarcoma, angiosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, osteosarcoma and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans one of each. During this period 5 patients died, 9 are living without evidence of tumor. Analysing these 14 cases authors present their policy in surgical therapy of breast sarcomas compared with literature data. They emphasise the importance of wide resection margins for prevention of tumor progression. The above mentioned principle is valid for local recurrences so radicalization of the previous conservative breast surgery may be necessary in selected cases. Intraoperative histological examination is recommended to verify that the resection margins are tumor free. Axillary block dissection is not necessary except in cases when palpable, firm lymph nodes are present in the region. Depending on the histological grade adjuvant radiotherapy could be considered but its effectiveness is not proven.
An analysis of data of 548 patients with different diseases of soft tissues of lower extremities after using a complex of diagnostic measures (clinical, radionuclide data, thermography, puncture, biopsy) has shown that the number of erroneous conclusions may be minimized to 2%. Modern advances of plastic surgery can widen indications for preserving operations in malignant tumors of soft tissues of lower extremities without prejudice to the main principle of oncology concerning its fascial character. Combined treatment can also improve the results.

OBJECTIVES: To describe one case of renal fibrosarcoma in a patient who presented with left flank pain, fever and palpable mass. We review clinical data, diagnosis, therapeutic aspects and prognostic factors for this type of tumor. METHODS: The study of the patient included intravenous urography, ultrasound, and CT scan. Left radical nephrectomy was performed. RESULTS: The patient remained asymptomatic for 14 months, but then presented with a tumor in the frontal-parietal area, dying ten months later due to generalized metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: Fibrosarcoma is an rare malignant tumor arising from renal mesenchyma with poor prognosis. In radiological tests renal sarcomas show malignant tumor characteristics, but without a specific histology they cannot be differentiated from a renal cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the level of diagnose and treatment of sarcoma in nasal cavity and sinuses by studying the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of 48 cases sarcoma in nasal cavity and sinuses. METHOD: Forty-eight cases sarcoma in nasal cavity and sinuses treated from 1995 to 2000 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULT: Fibrosarcoma in 4 cases, malignant fibrous histiocytoma in 3 cases, liposarcoma in 4 cases, leiomyosarcoma in 5 cases, rhabdomyosarcoma in 5 cases, osteosarcoma in 2 cases, chondrosarcoma in 3 cases, malignant melanoma in 4 cases, non-Hogkin's in 4 cases, extramedullary plasmacytoma in 1 case, Schwannoma in 5 cases, esthesioneuroblastoma in 5 cases, angiosarcoma in 3 cases. Following-up after synthetic treatment, the 1, 3, 5 year survival rates were 62.5%, 46.7%, 35.7% respectively. CONCLUSION: Sarcoma in nasal cavity and sinuses is not easy to diagnose definitely, immunohistochemistry is helpful for pathological diagnose. It's easy to recurrent and metastasis and it's beneficial to improve prognosis with synthetic treatment.
The McDonough strain of feline sarcoma virus (SM-FeSV) transforms fibroblast cell lines in culture and produces fibrosarcomas in domestic cats. SM-FeSV does not induce haematopoietic malignancies in spite of the fact that its viral oncogene, v-fms, codes for a glycoprotein related to the receptor for the mononuclear phagocyte colony stimulating factor, CSF-1. The v-fms-coded polypeptide includes the complete extracellular domain of the c-fms proto-oncogene product and retains the ability to bind CSF-1 specifically. The two molecules have very similar sequences except at their extreme carboxyl terminal ends where 40 amino acids of the c-fms-coded glycoprotein are replaced by 11 unrelated residues in the v-fms product. Autophosphorylation of the c-fms gene product on tyrosine is enhanced by CSF-1 addition, whereas phosphorylation of the v-fms-coded glycoprotein appears to be constitutive. We now show that introduction of the v-fms gene into simian virus-40 (SV40)-immortalized, CSF-1 dependent macrophages renders them independent of CSF-1 for growth and tumourigenic in nude mice. These factor-independent cell lines express unaltered levels of the c-fms product which is down-modulated in response to either CSF-1 or the tumour promoter 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA). The induction of factor independence by a non-autocrine mechanism suggests that the v-fms product is an unregulated kinase that provides growth stimulatory signals in the absence of ligand.

We discuss our experience in the diagnosis and management of seven cases of neurogenic sarcomas of the head and neck. These uncommon tumors, which affect all ages, arise most frequently from the brachial plexus, sympathetic chain, and the cranial nerves or their branches. An enlarging mass is the most common initially appearing symptom. Diagnosis may be difficult and rests heavily on gross evidence of a relationship between the tumor and its nerve of origin. Histologically, the lesions are composed of spindle cells with varying degrees of pleomorphism in a pattern that is frequently undistinguishable from fibrosarcomas. Ultrastructural studies may be helpful in establishing the neurogenic origin of these tumors. Neurogenic sarcoma of the head and neck has an extremely poor prognosis. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment, although radiotherapy is important for palliation.
The authors report three cases of prostatic sarcoma. One patient had been treated with chlorambucil, and another with cyclophosphamide, which may explain certain etiopathogenic theories. In fact, it has been demonstrated that ultrastructural studies are an essential factor in the classification of these sarcoma for which the prognosis is very poor.
