Efficacy of an accelerated recovery protocol for Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty--a randomised controlled trial.

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is appropriate for one in four patients with osteoarthritic knees. This study was performed to compare the safety, effectiveness and economic viability of a new accelerated protocol with current standard care in a state healthcare system. A single blind RCT design was used. Eligible patients were screened for NSAID tolerance, social circumstances and geographical location before allocation to an accelerated recovery group (A) or standard care group (S). Primary outcome was the Oxford Knee Assessment at 6 months post operation, compared using independent Mann-Whitney U-tests. A simple difference in costs incurred was calculated. The study power was sufficient to avoid type 2 errors. Forty-one patients were included. The average stay for Group A was 1.5 days. Group S averaged 4.3 days. No significant difference in outcomes was found between groups. The new protocol achieved cost savings of 27% and significantly reduced hospital bed occupancy. In addition, patient satisfaction was assessed as greater with the accelerated discharge than with the routine discharge time. The strict inclusion criteria meant that 75% of eligible patients were excluded. However, a large percentage of these were due to the distances patients lived from the hospital.

Identifying biomarkers of accelerated ageing in cancer patients from routine clinical data.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer and ageing have a bidirectional relationship: age is the strongest risk factor for cancer, and cancer and treatments can accelerate ageing. Therefore, biological age can differ from chronological age; biomarkers are needed to stratify interventions to minimise accelerated ageing. METHODS: PhenoAge was calculated from routine blood test results of patients attending a Geriatric Oncology clinic. PhenoAgeAccel was the residual from a regression of PhenoAge against age. RESULTS: Data were available for 173 patients (62% male). Mean PhenoAge was higher than age (84.3 (12.6) vs 76.2 (7.24), p < 0.001), though the two were correlated (r = 0.579, p < 0.001). Unlike age, PhenoAge and PhenoAgeAccel were associated with one-year mortality (PhenoAge OR=1.083, 95% CI: 1.038-1.136; PhenoAgeAccel OR=1.096, 95% CI: 1.047-1.155). PhenoAge correlated with Clinical Frailty Score and Timed Up and Go (CFS: Rs=0.31, p < 0.001; TUG: Rs=0.25, p < 0.005); there were no correlations with age. PhenoAgeAccel correlated with the number of CGA interventions made (Rs=0.17, p < 0.05), unlike age and PhenoAge. Patients with diabetes mellitus had a higher PhenoAgeAccel compared to those without (3.40 vs -1.71, p = 0.002). In patients receiving systemic anti-cancer treatment, patients with PhenoAgeAccel calculated pre-treatment had less age acceleration than those with PhenoAgeAccel calculated post-treatment, both overall (2.18 vs -2.87; p = 0.048) and in matched samples (n = 21, 7.76 vs -2.87, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PhenoAgeAccel is a greater predictor of risk than chronological age in older people with cancer. This makes it a promising biomarker to stratify patients for holistic geriatric assessment, dose reductions, or future geroprotective measures which could be integrated within electronic healthcare record systems.

DNM1L depletion leads to accelerated heteroplasmy shifting of m.10191C allele through ATG7-dependent pathways.

Nucleotide composition bias in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) makes the heavy strand prone to form a DNA secondary structure called a guanine quadruplex (G4). This secondary structure has been shown to inhibit polymerase processivity in vitro. We previously identified pathogenic mtDNA variants that lead to increased G4-forming propensity, including a T to C mutation at m.10191 (m.10191 T > C) that causes Leigh syndrome. Cells treated with G4 binding agent (G4BA) berberine show a reduction in m.10191C pathogenic heteroplasmy levels. To help better understand the underlying mechanism behind berberine-induced heteroplasmy shift, we examined the relationship between mitochondrial fission and berberine-mediated shift. Here we show that knockdown of the fission factor DNM1L leads to an accelerated heteroplasmy shift towards the healthy mtDNA allele, lowering m.10191C by 10% in 3 weeks, compared to the 5 weeks required for berberine alone. The specific mechanism involves ATG7, as knockdown of ATG7 is able to partially delay this accelerated heteroplasmy shift. Taken together, we show that DNM1L knockdown is able to accelerate berberine-induced m.10191C heteroplasmy shifting through an autophagy-related mechanism.

Short and long-term motor skill learning in an accelerated rotarod training paradigm.

Rodent models of motor skill learning include skilled forelimb reaching and acrobatic locomotor paradigms. This study characterizes motor skill learning in the accelerated rotarod task. Thirty Long-Evans rats (300-400 g) were trained on an accelerated rotarod (1cm/s(2)) over eight consecutive sessions (=days, 20 trials each). Improvement in rotarod velocities mastered before falling off the rod was observed within and between sessions (plateau after five sessions). Intrasession improvement was incompletely retained at the beginning of the next day's session. Over several training sessions, intrasession improvement diminished, suggesting a ceiling effect. After 1 week of pause, the rotarod skill was retained. Locomotor exercise in a running wheel for 30 min before the first rotarod session did not affect intrasession improvement. Running-wheel exposure for 6 days did not diminish the rate of rotarod skill learning (steepness of the learning curve) but improved overall performance (upward shift of curve). Video analysis of gait on the rotarod showed that rats developed a motor strategy by modifying their gait patterns during training. The data demonstrate that rotarod improvement is not the result of enhanced general locomotor ability or fitness, which are trained in the running wheel, but requires a change in the motor strategy to master the task. Accelerated rotarod training can be regarded a valid paradigm for motor skill learning over short (intrasession, minutes) and long time frames (intersession, days).

Peripheral vasopressin accelerates extinction of conditioned taste avoidance.

Both peripheral and central administration of vasopressin improves retention and delays extinction when given before or after acquisition of shock avoidance learning. For conditioned taste avoidance, however, vasopressin prolongs extinction when injected peripherally before acquisition tests and accelerates extinction when infused intracerebroventricularly after acquisition. The following experiments were designed to determine whether this inconsistency is based on the route of administration or timing of vasopressin treatment. Because acquisition of conditioned taste avoidance is strengthened when an agent that is capable of inducing avoidance is administered after LiCl injection, it was determined in experiment 1 that a 6 microg/kg dose of vasopressin did not induce conditioned taste avoidance when administered 50 min after consumption of a sucrose solution. In experiment 2, it was determined that this dose of vasopressin accelerated extinction of a LiCl-induced conditioned taste avoidance when given 50 min after LiCl injection. These results suggest that the inconsistency is not based on route of administration. In experiment 3, it was determined that there was a tendency for animals to show prolonged extinction when vasopressin was administered 20 min before access to a sucrose solution. All of the results taken together suggest that the differential effects of vasopressin on extinction are due to the timing of administration. It was suggested that vasopressin accelerates extinction when given after acquisition by reducing the effectiveness of LiCl and it prolongs extinction when given before acquisition by altering neural responsiveness in areas mediating conditioned taste avoidance.

The influence of epidermal growth factor receptor and tumor differentiation on the response to accelerated radiotherapy of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck in the randomized DAHANCA 6 and 7 study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reduction of the overall treatment time of radiotherapy has increased locoregional control and disease specific survival in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC), but the response is heterogeneous. EGFr is often overexpressed in HNSCC and has been related to the repopulation taking place during radiotherapy. The aim of the current study was to address the influence of EGFr and histopathological differentiation when the overall treatment time of radiotherapy was moderately reduced. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight hundred and three patients with representative pretreatment tissue samples from the randomized DAHANCA 6 and 7 study of 5 vs. 6 fx/wk of radiotherapy. EGFr was visualized using immunohistochemistry and separated into high and low expression before correlation with clinical data. RESULTS: Tumors with high EGFr (84%) responded better to moderately accelerated radiotherapy, than carcinomas with low EGFr, using locoregional control as endpoint and a similar pattern was seen, stratifying by well/moderate vs. poor tumor differentiation. Therefore, a combined parameter was constructed showing a more prominent separation of response: tumors with high EGFr and well/moderate differentiation did benefit from moderate acceleration of treatment regarding locoregional control, HR 0.54 (0.37-0.78), whereas such an effect was not seen in tumors with low EGFr and/or poor differentiation, HR 0.8 (0.51-1.25). These results reflected the disease specific survival as well and were confirmed in multivariable analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Moderately accelerated fractionation is superior to conventional treatment in HNSCC but the response is heterogeneous and may be predicted by high expression of EGFr and well/moderate tumor differentiation.

Induction of inflammatory bowel disease accelerates adenoma formation in Min +/- mice.

BACKGROUND: The accelerated incidence of colorectal carcinoma in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease suggests that cellular perturbation triggered by chronic inflammation is linked to the development of dysplasia and neoplastic transformation. To test the mechanistic links between these processes, we employed the following murine strains: (1) multiple intestinal neoplasia (Min) +/- mice, bearing a mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene; (2) mice deficient in interleukin 10 (IL-10), which normally develop enterocolitis; and (3) Min +/-/IL-10 null mice, first developed in our laboratory. METHODS: Mice with either parental strain or the cross were sacrificed at time points ranging from 10 to 30 weeks of age. The small bowel and colon of 170 IL-10 null mice, 31 Min +/- mice, and 120 Min +/-/IL-10 null mice were examined microscopically. RESULTS: The number of flat adenomas was increased in the colons of the Min +/-/IL-10-/- mice, compared with the Min +/- mice (P = .0005). Neither colitis-type dysplasia nor carcinoma was increased in the Min +/-/IL-10 -/-, compared with the IL-10 null mice (P = .18). Mice deficient in IL-10 developed colitic-type dysplasia (P = .0001) or carcinoma (P = .0001) correlated with increasing inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Breeding the Min +/- genotype into the IL-10 -/- background increased the incidence of colonic adenomas. Our studies demonstrate that acceleration of dysplasia and progression to invasion were associated with the degree of the inflammatory response in mice deficient in IL-10. These findings provide a novel system to dissect the pathways by which inflammatory mechanisms accelerate adenoma formation.

Sodium arsenite accelerates TRAIL-mediated apoptosis in melanoma cells through upregulation of TRAIL-R1/R2 surface levels and downregulation of cFLIP expression.

AP-1/cJun, NF-kappaB and STAT3 transcription factors control expression of numerous genes, which regulate critical cell functions including proliferation, survival and apoptosis. Sodium arsenite is known to suppress both the IKK-NF-kappaB and JAK2-STAT3 signaling pathways and to activate the MAPK/JNK-cJun pathways, thereby committing some cancers to undergo apoptosis. Indeed, sodium arsenite is an effective drug for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia with little nonspecific toxicity. Malignant melanoma is highly refractory to conventional radio- and chemotherapy. In the present study, we observed strong effects of sodium arsenite treatment on upregulation of TRAIL-mediated apoptosis in human and mouse melanomas. Arsenite treatment upregulated surface levels of death receptors, TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2, through increased translocation of these proteins from cytoplasm to the cell surface. Furthermore, activation of cJun and suppression of NF-kappaB by sodium arsenite resulted in upregulation of the endogenous TRAIL and downregulation of the cFLIP gene expression (which encodes one of the main anti-apoptotic proteins in melanomas) followed by cFLIP protein degradation and, finally, by acceleration of TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Direct suppression of cFLIP expression by cFLIP RNAi also accelerated TRAIL-induced apoptosis in these melanomas, while COX-2 suppression substantially increased levels of both TRAIL-induced and arsenite-induced apoptosis. In contrast, overexpression of permanently active AKTmyr inhibited TRAIL-mediated apoptosis via downregulation of TRAIL-R1 levels. Finally, AKT overactivation increased melanoma survival in cell culture and dramatically accelerated growth of melanoma transplant in vivo, highlighting a role of AKT suppression for effective anticancer treatment.

Melatonin accelerates maturation inducing hormone (MIH): induced oocyte maturation in carps.

The present communication is an attempt to demonstrate the influence of melatonin on the action of maturation inducing hormone (MIH) on the maturation of oocytes in carps. The oocytes from gravid female major carp Labeo rohita were isolated and incubated separately in Medium 199 containing (a) only MIH (1 microg/ml), (b) only melatonin (at concentrations of 50, 100 or 500 pg/ml), and (c) both melatonin and MIH, but at different time intervals. In the latter group, melatonin was added to the incubating medium either (i) 4 h before addition of MIH, (ii) 2 h before addition of MIH, (iii) co-administered with MIH (0 h interval) or (iv) 2 h after addition of MIH. In each case, oocytes were further incubated for 4, 8, 12 or 16 h post- administration of MIH, and the effects of treatment on oocyte maturation were evaluated by considering the rate (%) of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD). Incubation of oocytes in a medium containing only melatonin did not result in GVBD of any oocyte. Nearly all the oocytes underwent GVBD when incubated with MIH for 16 h. Administration of melatonin along with MIH (at 0 h interval) or 2 h after addition of MIH did not result in any significant change in the rate of GVBD compared to that in a medium containing only MIH. However, it was quite interesting to observe that incubation of oocytes with melatonin especially 4 h prior to addition of MIH in the medium, led to an accelerated rate of GVBD in the oocytes. Experiments with the oocytes of another major carp Cyprinus carpio following an identical schedule depicted similar results except a difference in the optimum melatonin dose. In L. rohita, 50 pg/ml melatonin had maximum acceleratory effect on MIH-induced GVBD of oocytes, while it was 100 pg/ml in C. carpio. Further study revealed that pre-incubation with melatonin accelerates the action of MIH on the formation of a complex of two proteins (MPF), a regulatory component called cyclin B and the catalytic component protein kinase known as cyclin-dependent kinase, Cdk1. Densitometric analysis of the immunoblot data collected from the melatonin pre-treated MIH incubated oocytes showed that cyclin B level continued to increase even after 4 h of incubation, and reached the peak after 12 h. Moreover, determination of H1 kinase activity as an indicator of MPF activity in oocytes revealed that melatonin pre-incubation considerably increased MIH stimulation of histone H1 phosphorylation as compared to MIH alone. Thus, the present study demonstrates for the first time that prior incubation with melatonin accelerates the action of MIH on carp oocyte maturation.

Homocysteine accelerates senescence and reduces proliferation of endothelial progenitor cells.

Our previous studies showed that homocysteine (Hcy) reduces endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) numbers and impairs functional activity. However, the mechanisms by which Hcy reduces EPCs numbers and activity remain to be determined. Recent studies have demonstrated that reduced EPCs numbers and activity was associated with EPCs senescence which involved telomerase activity. Therefore, we investigated whether Hcy accelerates the onset of EPCs senescence through telomerase inactivation, leading to cellular dysfunction. EPCs were isolated from peripheral blood and characterized. After ex vivo cultivation, EPCs became senescent as determined by acidic beta-galactosidase staining. Hcy dose-dependently accelerated the onset of EPCs senescence in culture. Moreover, Hcy decreased proliferation of EPCs as assessed by BrdU incorporation assay and colony-forming capacity. To get further insights into the underlying mechanisms of these effects induced by Hcy, we measured telomerase activity and determined the phosphorylation of Akt by using western blot. Hcy significantly diminished telomerase activity and Akt phosphorylation. Taken together, the results of the present study demonstrated that Hcy accelerated the onset of EPCs senescence, leading to cellular dysfunction. The effect of Hcy might be dependent on telomerase inactivation, and Akt dephosphorylation also appeared to play a major role. In addition, atorvastatin had a preventative effect against Hcy-induced EPCs senescence.

Decompression-feeding regimen. Accelerating recovery after abdominal surgery.

From the time the patients enter the hospital until discharge, the accelerated recovery technique demands more intensive treatment from nurses and physicians. These patients do not require a stay in the intensive care unit, but they do require intensive nursing care. Savings from reduced length of stay, however, far outweigh the nursing care cost. As the emphasis on earlier discharge in health care grows, accelerated recovery in abdominal surgery and other major procedures will become more common. With the accelerated recovery technique, the patient has an active, demanding role in his or her recovery. Much is expected of these patients during pulmonary physiotherapy, which begins shortly after admission and is maintained until discharge. The more conscientiously a patient participates in the physiotherapy, the more quickly and comfortably he or she will leave the hospital. The patient can honestly take credit for a quick recovery.

Safety and efficacy of an accelerated dobutamine stress echocardiography protocol in the evaluation of coronary artery disease.

Although dobutamine requires up to 10 minutes to achieve steady state, dobutamine stress echocardiography is routinely performed using stepwise increments at 3-minute intervals. Consequently, the full effect of any infusion rate is not attained before the dobutamine dose is advanced to the next level. This study sought to test the safety and efficiency of high-dose continuous dobutamine infusion. One hundred consecutive patients underwent an accelerated protocol using a constant infusion of 50 microg/kg/min. In the absence of a stress echocardiographic end point (>/=85% of maximal predicted heart rate, new wall motion abnormalities, hypotension, arrhythmia, or intolerable symptoms), dobutamine infusion was discontinued at 10 minutes. Hemodynamic responses and adverse effect profile were compared with 100 patients who underwent a standard stepwise dobutamine stress protocol. Peak heart rate (140 +/- 16 vs 140 +/- 19 beats/min, p = 0.95) and systolic blood pressure (169 +/- 32 vs 162 +/- 31 mm Hg, p = 0.08) were similar in both protocols. Accelerated dobutamine administration produced a rapid increase in heart rate (12.5 +/- 6.2 vs 5.7 +/- 2.6 beats/min, p <0.001), and a substantial reduction in test duration (6.4 +/- 2.4 vs 12.9 +/- 3.0 minutes, p <0.001). The mean weight-adjusted cumulative dobutamine dose was lower in the accelerated protocol group (320 +/- 111 vs 353 +/- 133 microg/kg, p = 0.016). No significant differences were noted between the 2 groups with respect to various side effects. These data demonstrate that a high-dose, single-stage dobutamine echocardiographic stress protocol is a feasible, well-tolerated alternative to standard dobutamine stress echocardiography, and results in a substantial reduction in test time while maintaining a low complication rate.

Fetal heart rate accelerations, fetal movement, and fetal behavior patterns in twin gestations.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that twins, when monitored simultaneously, show a remarkably high incidence of coincident fetal heart rate accelerations (about 58%). The current study examines synchrony of behavior patterns in twins. STUDY DESIGN: We examined 37 fetal monitor strips from 15 sets of twins with simultaneous fetal heart rate and fetal movement recorded by means of Doppler techniques (Toitu MT-430 fetal actocardiograph). The strips were analyzed for coincidence of fetal heart rate accelerations and fetal movement episodes and then conceptually for synchrony of fetal behavior patterns on the basis of descriptions of behavioral states by Prechtl. RESULTS: Thirty-six percent of fetal heart rate accelerations were found to be simultaneous. Forty-three percent of movement epochs were considered simultaneous. We found that twins exhibited synchronous behavior patterns (basically sleep or awake state) 94.7% of the time. CONCLUSION: Twin-twin interactions are more consistently related than suspected when observation is limited to heart rate alone, and the synchrony and role of fetal behavior states must be considered when twin interactions and behavior are studied.

Fetal heart rate accelerations and fetal movements in twin pregnancies.

The rate of fetal heart rate accelerations associated with fetal movements to total fetal movements of twin pregnancies was found to be significantly lower than that of pregnancies with singleton infants. The number of fetal heart rate accelerations was similar. As fetal heart rate accelerations are reflective of fetal movements, the results indicate increased fetal activity in twins that is related to an additive effect of two normally active fetuses.

Nicotine accelerates angiogenesis and wound healing in genetically diabetic mice.

Recently, we have discovered an endogenous cholinergic pathway for angiogenesis mediated by endothelial nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Since angiogenesis plays a major role in wound repair, we hypothesized that activation of nAChRs with nicotine would accelerate wound healing in a murine excisional wound model. In genetically diabetic and control mice full-thickness skin wounds (0.8 cm) were created on the dorsum and topically treated over 7 days with either vehicle (phosphate-buffered saline, PBS) or nicotine (10(-8) mol/L, 10(-9) mol/L; each, n = 5). Wound size was measured over 14 days followed by resection, histological analysis, and quantitation of vascularity. In diabetic animals an agonist (epibatidine, 10(-10) mol/L) or antagonist (hexamethonium, 10(-4) mol/L) of nAChRs as well as the positive control basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF, 25 microg/kg) were also tested. To further study the role of endothelial nAChRs in angiogenesis, we used an ex vivo vascular explant model. In diabetic mice wound healing was markedly impaired. Nicotine significantly accelerated wound healing as assessed by closure rate and histological score. The effects of nicotine were equal to bFGF and were mimicked by epibatidine and blocked by hexamethonium. Histomorphometry revealed increased neovascularization in animals treated with nicotine. Furthermore, capillary-like sprouting from vascular explants was significantly enhanced by nicotine. In conclusion, agonist-induced stimulation of nAChRs accelerates wound healing in diabetic mice by promoting angiogenesis. We have discovered a cholinergic pathway for angiogenesis that is involved in wound healing, and which is a potential target for therapeutic angiogenesis.

Acceleration of tissue ingrowth on materials implanted in the heart.

A technique for accelerating the development of tissue layers on fabrics implanted in the bloodstream has been explored in dogs and monkeys. Endothelial cell seeding of the fabrics with cells derived from the endocardial surface of the atrium together with an autogenous plasma coating was shown to accelerate organization of fabric-covered devices implanted in the bloodstream of adult primates. At the same time, this technique appears simple and rapid enough to be practical in a clinical setting. The results suggest that this approach might be useful in accelerating the development of tissue layers on prosthetic valves implanted in the heart.

Acceleration of rat salivary gland tissue repair by basic fibroblast growth factor.

A model of atrophic rat submandibular gland was used to examine the ability of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) to accelerate tissue repair. The gland duct was separated carefully from associated blood vessels and nerve, and ligated with a 8-0 suture under a surgical microscope. Two weeks after ligation, the glandular tissue showed severe atrophy and weight loss (to 26% of that in a sham-operated group). Thereafter, the ligature was removed and various amounts of bFGF, isoproterenol or saline were instilled retrogradely through the duct. Both isoproterenol and bFGF increased cell proliferation significantly. bFGF accelerated the proliferation of various cell types, including both acinar and ductal. The proliferative effects of bFGF peaked at a dose of 1 ng/gland. When bFGF (1 ng/gland) was administered to the atrophic gland, its weight increased to 125% of the glands in saline-treated control animals after 2 weeks. The effects of bFGF were also examined in normal submandibular glands: bFGF stimulated cell proliferation, but the effective concentration was at least 50 times higher than that required in the atrophic gland. The results from immunohistochemical tests against anti-FGF receptor-type 1 antibody demonstrated increased immunoreactivity in the damaged gland, which might be involved in the difference in the response to bFGF between damaged and normal glands. Overall, the results indicate that bFGF can accelerate tissue repair in salivary gland.

Accelerated formation of cubic phases in phosphatidylethanolamine dispersions.

By means of x-ray diffraction we show that several sodium salts and the disaccharides sucrose and trehalose strongly accelerate the formation of cubic phases in phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) dispersions upon temperature cycling through the lamellar liquid crystalline-inverted hexagonal (Lalpha-HII) phase transition. Ethylene glycol does not have such an effect. The degree of acceleration increases with the solute concentration. Such an acceleration has been observed for dielaidoyl PE (DEPE), dihexadecyl PE, and dipalmitoyl PE. It was investigated in detail for DEPE dispersions. For DEPE (10 wt% of lipid) aqueous dispersions at 1 M solute concentration, 10-50 temperature cycles typically result in complete conversion of the Lalpha phase into cubic phase. Most efficient is temperature cycling executed by laser flash T-jumps. In that case the conversion completes within 10-15 cycles. However, the cubic phases produced by laser T-jumps are less ordered in comparison to the rather regular cubic structures produced by linear, uniform temperature cycling at 10 degrees C/min. Temperature cycles at scan rates of 1-3 degrees C/min also induce the rapid formation of cubic phases. All solutes used induce the formation of Im3m (Q229) cubic phase in 10 wt% DEPE dispersions. The initial Im3m phases appearing during the first temperature cycles have larger lattice parameters that relax to smaller values with continuation of the cycling after the disappearance of the Lalpha phase. A cooperative Im3m --> Pn3m transition takes place at approximately 85 degrees C and transforms the Im3m phase into a mixture of coexisting Pn3m (Q224) and Im3m phases. The Im3m/Pn3m lattice parameter ratio is 1. 28, as could be expected from a representation of the Im3m and Pn3m phases with the primitive and diamond infinite periodic minimal surfaces, respectively. At higher DEPE contents ( approximately 30 wt%), cubic phase formation is hindered after 20-30 temperature cycles. The conversion does not go through, but reaches a stage with coexisting Ia3d (Q230) and Lalpha phases. Upon heating, the Ia3d phase cooperatively transforms into a mixture of, presumably, Im3m and Pn3m phases at about the temperature of the Lalpha-HII transition. This transformation is readily reversible with the temperature. The lattice parameters of the DEPE cubic phases are temperature-insensitive in the Lalpha temperature range and decrease with the temperature in the range of the HII phase.
