Arginine-vasopressin and lysine-vasopressin have different effects on spontaneous behaviour of rats.

Two groups of each 8 adult male hooded rats of the Long-Evans strain received single subcutaneous injections of 1 microgram/kg arginine-vasopressin (AVP) or 1 microgram/kg lysine-vasopressin (LVP) 15 min before investigation in an open field (OF) and 30 min before investigation of locomotion in a wheel (W). The behavioural parameters were statistically compared with two control groups. AVP significantly increased infrared beam crossings in the OF, wheel-running and the mobility of the rats in both tests. LVP had a strong just opposite effect. LVP facilitated habituation and AVP weakened it. AVP facilitated rearing, whereas LVP suppressed it. The duration of immobility was strongly enhanced after LVP in both tests (380% in the OF and 920% in the W) but AVP had no prolonging effect. The latency of the first immobility phase in the OF was increased to 250% after AVP and decreased to 45% after LVP. Grooming was not influenced by AVP, whereas LVP strongly reduced the grooming duration and prolonged the grooming latency in the OF. The contrary effects of AVP and LVP are highly significant. They may be summarized as activating effect on motor behaviour and exploration by AVP and inhibitory action of LVP.

[Open-field behavior of rats with different levels of nervous system excitability].

The dependence was studied of characteristics of organization of orienting-investigating behaviour in the open field test on the level of nervous system excitability in rats selected by the threshold of excitability of the peripheral nervous system. It is established that the studied rats lines can be divided into groups according to entropy level of their behaviour. Rats of highly excitable line build their behaviour in highly probable stereotypes as compared with the animals of low-excitable line, which organize their behaviour with more plasticity, diversity. Differences in the nervous system excitability influence first of all the organization of animals behaviour.

Harderian gland exudates in the male Meriones unguiculatus regulate female proceptive behavior, aggression, and investigation.

Harderian gland secretions exit from the nose of Meriones unguiculatus during an autogroom (Thiessen, 1977). The exudates act as an attractant pheromone and as a thermoregulatory barrier when spread throughout the pelage. A recent study demonstrated that Harderian exudates in the male guide proceptive behavior in the female (Harriman & Thiessen, 1985). The present study replicated this finding by showing that estrous females direct fewer proceptive acts toward males lacking Harderian glands. In addition, it was found that females are more defensively aggressive toward Harderianectomized males and prefer to spend more time in the vicinity of intact males. It is speculated that Harderian spread allows the female to assess the reproductive competence of the male.

[Effect of unilateral section of the X septo-hippocampal pathways on the electrical activity of the dorsal hippocampus and behavior of rabbits].

The influence of unilateral section of the septo-hippocampal pathway on the electrical activity of the dorsal hippocampus of both hemispheres was studied in conditions of elaborated behaviour. The analysis of EEG data of the fields CA1 and CA3 before the section revealed an interconnection of the theta-rhythm and behaviour. Ablation of the septal input caused in the ipsilateral hippocampus a sharp decrease in the activity amplitude and in the number of theta-waves as well as an increase in beta-frequencies and an impairment of interconnection between the frequency bands of the theta-rhythm and the forms of behavioural act. Meanwhile, in the contralateral hippocampus, despite a certain decrease in the activity amplitude and an increase in the number of rapid oscillations, no sharp decrease in theta-waves was visible and the correlation of the theta-rhythm with the behaviour forms was clearly pronounced.

[Relationship between the sequelae of zoosocial isolation and individual characteristics of the animal].

The changes were studied of various psychophysiological characteristics of mice behaviour, arising after prolonged solitary isolation in cages. The qualitative specificity of such changes is non-uniform and depends on the animals' individual characteristics (spontaneously aggressive or nonaggressive after isolation). Two types of the consequences of isolation are singled out: 1) General changes (non-specific) arising in all groups of mice; 2) Special changes (specific), typical of a certain group of animals only. In the group of aggressive mice there is a difference between aggression enhanced by isolation, and that which developed in the course of isolation. The most substantial qualitative changes in behaviour takes place in the latter case. It has been suggested that only individual approach makes it possible to determine exactly the qualitative aspects of social isolation consequences.
