[The annotated research on "Xun du", "Xun li" as seen in excavation of the remains of Western Han dynasty].
The "Collected Notes of Armed Vehicles of 4th year of Wuku Yong shi" in Han bamboo slips excavated from the remains of Han tomb in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, carries a "Xun du", while a "Xun li" is carried in the Han record paper excavated in the remains of Xuanquan of Han, Dunhuang, Gansu. Both should be "frankincense", being the earliest record of this material, demonstrating that this medicine had been imported at least in early Western Han dynasty. Thus, the record of frankincense should be 300 years ahead of the existing record.

An annotated description of shallow water holothurians (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) from Cayos Cochinos, Honduras.
Taxonomic and biological aspects are presented on five species of shallow water holothurians from the Cayos Cochinos Biological Reserve-CCBR located on the northern Honduran shelf, western Caribbean at 16 degrees N, 86 degrees W. This article provides a taxonomic key of the recorded holothurians and morphometric/morphologic descriptions of their corresponding spicules. These five species belong to a single order (Aspidochirotida) and two families: Stichopodidae (Isostichopus badionotus) and Holothuriidae (Holothuria mexicana, H. thomasi, H. arenicola and Actinopyga agassizi). In addition, the commensal pearlfish, Carapus bermudensis is recorded from H. mexicana and A. agassizi.

[The snakes of Senegal: an annotated species list].
Between 1990 and 2001, the laboratory of Paludologie of IRD at Dakar collected over 5,500 snakes from all over Senegal. By studying this collection, an entirely new species was discovered for science and eight new species for Senegal. The presence of many specimens of rare species and the great number of localities from which snakes were collected also allowed us to solve several delicate taxonomic problems and better to specify the biogeography of Senegalese snakes. Currently, the presence in Senegal of at least 55 different species has been established with certainty. The data collected simultaneously on the burden of snakebites for public health shows considerable differences according to geographic area, with populations from south-eastern Senegal being more exposed to the risk of death by snakebite.

Analysis and visualization of functional relationships between RNA expression and clinical annotation using PathlinX.
We have analyzed a publicly available dataset consisting of gene-expression measurements from 105 lung carcinomas joined with clinical parameters describing the age, smoking history, and survival statistics for the patients that the tumors originated in. Our aim was to demonstrate how the unsupervised analysis technique embodied in PathlinX allows researchers to quickly gain an intuition for the most significant relationships between heterogeneous data elements. A variety of metrics were evaluated empirically by their ability to distinguish biological signal in the data from random noise; this was accomplished by random permutation of the data rows followed by comprehensive pair-wise comparison of all experimental elements. Thresholds of significance were established based on the metric scores for the permuted data. Sub-threshold associations were then removed. The remaining associations were then grouped by a transitive closure process to generate undirected graphs of associations called PathlinX networks. We discuss the various features of each generated PathlinX network and demonstrate the ability of the technique to highlight biological features in large heterogeneous datasets.

Network approaches to genome annotation and the challenge of Anopheles gambiae.
The rapid advancement of current sequencing projects has provided significant challenges for the swift and accurate processing, integration and analysis of biological data. Such challenges will only become greater as a new round of organisms, both well known and obscure, await sequencing and further study. While perhaps less well studied at the molecular level than Drosophila melanogaster, the recently sequenced mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, provides an example of what will be faced by many of these awaiting projects. This review presents a brief overview of some of the challenges associated with these future genome projects (including Anopheles) as well as a description of recent computational approaches that utilize genome context for the prediction of gene and/or protein function. Such approaches show promise not only for the study of Anopheles, but also in the study of biological processes in general.
[Exploration on the mother edition of Wang Bing's annotated Su wen (Plain questions)].
According to Wang Bing's preface, when arranging Su wen (Plain Questions), he applied different editions of the book. But, he didn't indicate which edition was applied as the mother edition. By analyzing materials from Wang's preface, newly produced Plain Questions, etc. though the mother edition he used was based on the edition of the Liang dynasty, it was not the edition of Quan Yuanqi, but a clandestine edition of Master Zhang. Some of the chapters and texts of now extant Plain Questions editions should be the old original of the mother edition. The mother edition, Quan Yuanqi's edition, Zhen jiu jia yi jing (A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and Tai su (Extremely Plain) are derived from different editions.
