Formulation and evaluation of controlled release dental implants of povidone iodine for periodontitis.

Diseases of the periodontium continue to be one of the man's most wide spread afflictions. Periodontitis is one of such which is characterised by a periodontal pocket formed due to the inflammatory disease of gingiva and the deeper periodontal tissues. Local controlled release implants of povidone iodine was prepared using various polymers and stability, release characteristics, total drug content etc, were evaluated. The clinical studies of the dental implants were carried out on 10 patients.

Evaluation of stability of titanium and hydroxyapatite-coated osseointegrated dental implants: a pilot study.

An endosseous implant is described as osseointegrated when it is immobile in function. Objective measures of stability testing have been described. The Periotest is a commercially available device that is used for this purpose. This study was designed to measure stability of endosseous implants placed in the mandible. Implants were placed in the mandibular canine or first premolar area to support an overdenture prosthesis. Stability was evaluated through the use of a Periotest device at the time of implant placement and following one year of functional loading. Implant designs were either a screw-shaped titanium alloy or a hydroxyapatite-coated cylinder. A total of 54 implants were placed, 37 were titanium screw-shaped implants, while the remaining 17 were hydroxyapatite cylinders. Initial measurements of stability showed no difference due to implant type. Following one year of functional loading, titanium screw-shaped implants were more stable than hydroxyapatite implants (P < 0.05). The difference in implant rigidity following a period of functional loading may be an indication of a difference in osseointegration between the two implants used in this study.

Dental implants: a survey of patients' attitudes.

This study measured the psychologic attitudes of patients to implant prostheses and compared their status before and after therapy. Questionnaires were mailed to 95 patients with implants placed and restored at a university dental school. The implants had been in position for an average of 2.2 years. The patients had previously worn removable complete or partial dentures. Different questions addressed eating, speaking, relationships, employment, social life, esthetics, maintenance, and overall dental health. Sixty-one questionnaires were returned (64%). Satisfaction with the implant prosthesis was significantly greater than for the denture (p less than 0.0001). Responses to individual questions indicated that confidence was improved (88%), implants were worth the trouble (97%), the procedure would be worth repeating (89%), and overall dental health was improved (98%). This survey suggests that patients' attitudes toward their dental health improve significantly after treatment with implant prostheses.

Evaluation of single-tooth restorations on ITI dental implants. A prospective study of 29 patients.

From January 1992 to March 1997, a total of 30 ITI hollow cylinder implants were installed to replace lost single maxillary incisor teeth. Conical abutments with cemented all-ceramic crowns were used in 10 cases and the Octa-abutment with screw-retained metallo-ceramic crowns in 19 cases. One implant failed due to postoperative infection, and was extracted a month after installation. After a mean observation time of 3.4 years, the cumulative success rate is 96.7%. Only minor bone loss has occurred around the implants, and there have been no other complications to date. The implant system fulfills the requirements for good function and esthetics.

A dual-purpose guide for optimum placement of dental implants.

Correct placement of implants is a requirement for implant treatment. The use of computed tomography and precise surgical guides is required when inadequate bone support is anticipated. This article describes the fabrication and use of an acrylic resin dual-purpose guide for radiographic evaluation of recipient sites and implant placement, which uses internally stacked stainless steel surgical guide channels. The drill guides are machined to allow consecutive surgical drills to be used without changing the implant angulation during surgery.

[Experimental study of osseointegrated dental implants placed into fresh extraction sockets in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the better way in treating bone defects around implants. METHODS: 12 mongrel dogs, pure titanium implants were immediately inserted in the mesial roots of the second, third and fourth mandibular premolar sockets. The defects around implants were separately filled with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA), demineralized freeze-dried allocancellous in combination with bBMP (bBMP compound bone) and nothing. RESULTS: Histologic observation showed that bone defects around implants were substituted by new bone in DFDBA group at 12 weeks and in bBMP compound bone group at 8 weeks, and also the osseointegration were obtained between implants and bone, but bone defects were only filled about 3/5 in no graft group at 12 weeks. CONCLUSION: Immediate implants could obtain good osseointegration if the defects around implants were treated properly and the right technique was used, and also the use of bBMP compound bone could promote obviously bone formation in defects around implants.
