[Prevalence of primary dyslipidemia in subjects with and without family history of coronary disease, based on the reference values of the "National Cholesterol Education Program" (NCEP)].

PURPOSE--To compare the prevalence of primary dyslipidemia in 2 groups, based on NCEP guidelines: a) first degree relatives of revascularized patients and b) hospital employees without family history of coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS--1162 subjects aged over 20 years, were divided in two groups: G Fam consisted of 312 women and 221 men, mean age 30.8 years, siblings, brothers or sisters of revascularized patients (under 55 years old); G Serv consisted of 425 women and 204 men, mean age 30.7 years, all of them being healthy employees of Hospital das Clínicas (Clinics Hospital) with no family history of CHD. There were performed clinical, electrocardiographic and laboratory tests (total blood cholesterol--CT, triglycerides--TG and HDL cholesterol--HDL-C): and VLDL-C and LDL-C values were calculated according to Friedwald, besides CT/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios. Based on NCEP guidelines, the frequencies on values ranges for each parameter were determined. RESULTS--G Fam group showed a higher incidence of women and men with CT and LDL-C levels above 240 mg/dl and 160 mg/dl, respectively; CT/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C values over 5.0 and 3.5, respectively, were seen more often in G Fam group. There were no significant differences on HDL-C and TG. About 35% of men and women in G Serv group showed CT levels higher than 200 mg/dl. CONCLUSION--First-degree relatives, aged over 20 years, from revascularized patients under 55 years old, showed more often lipid levels above those established by NCEP. In accordance to them, 62% of men and 28% of women of this group should undergo to LDL-C analysis, as well as 35% of men and 28% of women in teh G Serv group. It is called the attention for the importance of cholesterolemia evaluation in high risk groups for CHD.

[Lysine in human biologic fluids and tissues: reference values, physiologic variations and interferences].

The authors present here the published values of lysine in some biological fluids, plasma, urine, CSF, amniotic fluid, aqueous humor, sweat. The plasma levels are lower in newborn infants than in adult subjects. The urinary excretion of lysine is high in the first pregnancy, the lysine concentration of amniotic fluid decreases progressively. A sex difference has been described in CSF: values higher in men. Changes occur in lysine concentrations when samples are not prepared for analysis immediately after collection and certain drugs interfere with analysis.

[Specialty specific reference values in linen use in public health and social service as a basis for determining laundry capacities].

The use of linen in health and social care should primarily be seen from a hygienic angle. Disproportions between the use of linen in the various fields of health care and the available laundry capacities have a negative hygienic and economic effect. Laundry capacities should, therefore, be calculated on the basis of specialty-specific guidevalues. The authors propose indicators suitable to this aim and present the results of a comprehensive analysis for the inpatient departments of internal medicine, surgery, urology, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology.

[Amylase and lipase as reference values for the differential diagnosis of chronic kidney failure and pancreatitis].

To differentiate between pancreatitis in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and uremic pancreopathy we investigated 23 patients with chronic renal insufficiency, 28 patients on hemodialysis before and after treatment and 13 patients after renal transplantation. As controls served 15 healthy people. The total amylase in serum is significantly elevated in patients with chronic renal insufficiency regardless if they were treated with hemodialysis or not. This elevation is due to an elevation of the pancreatic isoenzyme. The testing of both isoamylases (pancreatic and salivary) does not contribute to a better diagnosis. Patients with chronic renal insufficiency show a lower concentration of the amylases in their urine than their healthy controls. Lipase and creatinin show a linear correlation in serum. In the individual case it is not possible to draw a definite diagnostic conclusion using the above mentioned parameters because of the wide distribution of the measured values.

Circadian reference values for hematologic parameters in several strains of mice.

The circadian rhythms in the numbers of circulating formed elements in the peripheral blood were studied in 712 CD2F1, 188 BDF1, and 250 Swiss Webster mice kept under a lighting regimen of LD 12:12 (L 0600 to 1800 hr), a room temperature of 21 +/- 1 degree C, and food and water available ad libitum. The circadian rhythms were evaluated by the single cosinor procedure. The rhythm parameters--mesor, amplitude, and acrophase--the percentage of total variability attributable to the circadian rhythm, and the extent of the circadian rhythm are presented as guidelines for experimental design and evaluation. Under the conditions of this study, the mice of all three strains and both sexes show circadian variations, which are similar in their timing, in their red and white cell parameters. The percent of the total variance attributable to the circadian rhythms of each function varies between the strains studied in our laboratory being lowest in the Swiss Webster female mice. The extent of the circadian variation as expressed by the double amplitude as percent of mesor is similar in the three strains and between males and females. In relation to rest and activity spans, the hematologic circadian time structure in the nocturnally active mouse is different from that in diurnally active human subjects. The red-cell parameters show an acrophase in the middle of the rest span instead of the middle of the activity span as in human subjects. The lymphocytes and eosinophils in the mouse show an acrophase during the rest span that is similar to human subjects. In contrast to human subjects, however, neutrophils and monocytes show their acrophase in the first half of the rest span rather than during the second half of the daily activity span. The circulating formed elements in the peripheral blood thus follow a different circadian timing in the mouse than in human subjects; this has to be kept in mind when the time structure of the two species is compared, e.g., in models for experimental chemotherapy.

Reference values for serum folate, erythrocyte folate and serum cobalamin in Nigerian adolescents.

Concentrations of serum folate, red cell folate and serum cobalamin were studied among 240 normal healthy Nigerian adolescents aged 12-17 years. Serum folate level was generally low with a mean of 2.8 nmol/l while red cell folate level was not low with a mean of 369 nmol/l. Mean serum cobalamin was 615 pmol/l. A negative significant correlation was observed between serum folate and red cell folate among the adolescents (r = 0.24). Another significant correlation was observed among the 14 year olds between red cell folate and serum cobalamin (r = 0.404). The folate parameters were significantly lower in the adolescents with HbAS genotype with mean serum folate of 2.2 nmol/l and red cell folate of 326 nmol/l but these differences were more marked among the girls. All the girls in the study had significantly higher serum cobalamin than the boys (p less than 0.001) but the advantage of this is not clear. These results suggest that serum cobalamin may be under some hormonal influences and the high values indicate that cobalamin may be involved in other metabolic functions from the puberty period.

Characteristics of F and H waves of ulnar and tibial nerves in cats: reference values.

The latencies and latency rates of H and F waves were determined by percutaneous stimulation of the ulnar and the tibial nerves of healthy cats. In the ulnar and tibial nerves, the latency rates of H wave evoked compound action potentials were 49.1 +/- 7.3 and 44.1 +/- 2.7 m/s, respectively, and of F waves were 68.1 +/- 9.6 and 57.1 +/- 6.2 m/s, respectively. The H wave response of cats was more variable in latency and amplitude than that reported in the dog.
