A chronic schizophrenic patient is described in whom central diabetes insipidus and psychogenic polydipsia coexisted. A possible relationship between psychogenic polydipsia and failure of vasopressin release is hypothesized.
A 49-year-old patient who presented initially for treatment of inhibited sexual desire and secondary impotence was found to meet DSM-III criteria for compulsive gambling. The relationship between sexual dysfunction and gambling is discussed. Compulsive gambling should be considered in the differential diagnosis of impotence, and a sexual history should be obtained from patients with compulsive gambling.

A clinico-genealogic study of 66 patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia showed a certain genetic heterogeneity of schizophrenia with obsessions. In cases of an unfavourable course of the schizophrenic process in a proband (a malignant disease of obsessions), the familial background was largely determined by disturbances of the schizophrenic spectrum. In cases of a slow progression of the disease (slowly progressive pseudoneurotic schizophrenia), the hereditary background was characterized by a great variability of psychopathological manifestations. Along with schizophrenia-related abnormalities, the families of such patients featured the accumulation of constitutional anomalies, neurotic disturbances and subclinical affective disorders.

Peculiarities of the formation of the syndrome of obsessive fears originating in childhood and showing a favourable outcome are considered. Thirty-eight subjects (aged 17-24 years) taken off the psychiatric registry in connection with recovery were examined. A comparative analysis of 2 groups of patients with different clinical manifestations and age at the disease onset allowed the identification of conditions contributing to a favourable time course of obsessive fears. The author outlines the optimum therapeutic measures compensating neurotic disorders in children and adolescents with obsessive fears.
