Anterior veneers for the adolescent patient: 2. Porcelain veneers and conclusions.

Composite and porcelain veneers offer a conservative method of masking discolouration of the teeth of younger patients. Composite veneers are the less destructive of tooth tissue, but also the less durable. This two-part article reviews the use of veneers in treating the adolescent patient. Part 1 described the clinical procedure for veneering with composites. Part 2 now gives a guide to porcelain veneer technique, and then draws some overall conclusions.

[Porcelain veneers].

Through a clinical situation is shown the technique for the placement of a porcelain bonded veneer. Its significance with in the Esthetic Restorative Dentistry, advantages and disadvantages are emphasised. Together with the clinical procethe laboratorial steps are also shown. It was concluded that the bonded porcelain veneers are new options for a Restorative Dentistry more conservative with excellent esthetic results.

[Adaptation of composites to enamel: relation to the appearance of marginal staining].

Marginal staining is the major cause of failure of composite resin restorations. The following reasons were incriminated: The nonrespect of the integrity of the cavity limits during cavity obturation, as for instance, when a simple bevel is made. The appearance of fractures or composite bond strength failures during polishing procedures. This phenomenon can be enhanced by the use of composite finishing knives (KOMET) and by overfilling the cavity.

Comparative effects of 2 chemotherapeutic mouthrinses on the development of supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis.

A 6-month double-blind, controlled clinical study was completed with 124 healthy adult subjects to determine the efficacy of 2 mouthrinses, Listerine (LA) and Peridex (PX), used as supplements to regular oral hygiene measures in reducing supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis. Following screening examinations for entry levels of existing gingivitis and plaque, baseline gingival and plaque area indices, extrinsic tooth stain, supragingival calculus, bleeding and soft tissue condition were recorded. All subjects then received a complete dental prophylaxis to remove plaque, calculus and extrinsic stain. Subjects were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups and performed supervised rinses twice daily for 30 s in addition to their normal oral hygiene, for 6 months. All indices were again evaluated at 3 and 6 months. After 6 months, LA and PX significantly (p less than 0.001) inhibited development of plaque by 36.1% and 50.3%, respectively, and the development of gingivitis by 35.9% and 30.5%, respectively, compared to a hydroalcohol control. PX was more effective in inhibiting plaque and both mouthrinses appeared to be equally effective in inhibiting gingivitis. LA patients did not develop significant levels of stain or supragingival calculus at 6 months, compared to baseline or control. PX patients developed significant levels of extrinsic stain and supragingival calculus compared to baseline and control. Though PX was more effective than LA in the control of plaque, this study indicates that both LA and PX were effective agents in a regimen for the control of plaque and gingivitis.

[Ceramic bonded veneers. Toward a minimal prosthesis].

For years, odontology for aesthetic purposes meant significant tissue mutilation. Now, with bonded porcelain veneers, it is possible to achieve both an aesthetic result and a veneer preparation while restoring the function of anterior teeth. The clinical forms of such thin bonded restorations may vary considerably, from a simple veneer to a 3/4 crown. Although after five years of experience, prosthetic "enamelling" appears to be totally reliable, only long-term clinical results will determine the fatigue of thinly applied ceramics.

Prevalence and distribution by tooth type and surface of developmental defects of dental enamel in a group of 15- to 16-year-old children in South Wales.

In 1984 the prevalence and distribution of developmental defects of dental enamel in 791 children aged 15-16 years was determined using the DDE index. The children were all residents of the county of South Glamorgan, Wales, which has a public water supply containing less than 0.1 mg fluoride/litre. The teeth were dried but not cleaned prior to examination and a dental operating light was used for illumination. Teeth with some type of defective enamel were seen in 50.1 per cent of children. White/single opacities were present in 28.3 per cent of children and white/diffuse, patchy opacities in 10.2 per cent of children. The enamel was abnormal in 5.71 per cent of all teeth with white/single opacities and white/diffuse, patchy opacities occurring in 1.81 per cent and 1.66 per cent of teeth respectively. There were no significant differences between boys and girls in terms of mouth or tooth prevalence of defects. Overall, 7.6 per cent of maxillary teeth were affected compared to 4.3 per cent of mandibular teeth. Most teeth were affected equally on right and left sides of the mouth except for maxillary lateral incisors and canines which had significantly more defects on the right (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.005 respectively) and maxillary second molars, which had significantly more defects on the left (P less than 0.01). Maxillary central incisors (15.2 per cent) were affected by enamel defects most often followed by maxillary first molars (9.1 per cent) and maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular first molars (both 8.3 per cent).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
