Computer assisted quantitation of terminal hepatic vein connective tissue in the rat.

Computer assisted image analysis has been used to quantify the cellular and extracellular connective tissue component of rat liver terminal hepatic venules, in control animals and those exposed to 40% ethanol in drinking water. A significant relationship existed between the size of the terminal hepatic venule and the amount of connective tissue it contained in 14 of 15 controls and 17 of 18 ethanol exposed rats. Thickening of the terminal hepatic vein wall assessed to be present in ethanol treated rats by direct observation was confirmed by image analysis in all cases (p < 0.01). Significant differences between treated and control livers (p < 0.05) were detected by image analysis when not apparent to human observers. Sensitive quantitative assessment of terminal hepatic vein wall thickening was thus achieved by computerized analysis of liver sections.

Terminal illness.

Computers proliferate in almost every workplace of today. Unfortunately, society seems to have been more interested in mass-producing computer systems than in the health and comfort of the humans who interact with them. The unhappy consequence has been a growing rate of computer-related injuries. Nursing worksites are far from immune to this "terminal" illness; the health hazards associated with radiation, stress and workplace design have brought ill health to nurses and to other workers. But like other health problems, computer-related illness can be avoided through preventive care.

Computer-based documentation and bedside terminals.

Rising health care costs and the need for enhancing the quality of clinical care are concerns of hospitals throughout the world. Documentation consumes excessive amounts of nursing time and directly influences the quality of clinical practice, research, administration and education. Recent developments in information technology have offered many alternatives to traditional systems of documentation. Many hospitals have installed bedside terminals, but only few have conducted and published studies regarding their implementation. Most of the studies come from the US and report improved quality of care and reduction of nursing expenses. All the relevant studies have design, sample and methodological problems. There is a need for additional systematic studies to prove the actual benefits of the bedside terminals and link them with the outcomes of care. This paper intends to review the literature and discuss the installation, use, results and future directions of the bedside terminals.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of the cochlea from two-dimensional images of optical sections.

This paper describes a methodology for three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided reconstruction of the guinea pig cochlea using orthogonal-plane fluorescence optical sectioning. Specimens are sectioned optically, allowing them to remain intact during observation. Equations to correct the data for specimen translation and rotation are developed and 3D reconstructions of the scala tympani, round window membrane, and cochlear aqueduct are presented. The error associated with the reconstruction is estimated to be < 19 microns.

[The work capacity and body functional status of persons working with automatic instruction systems on a PC].

The experimental research covered an impact of studies using PC training programs on physiologic functioning. Such influencing parameters are work duration, adequate breaks, working skills, level of user's extroversion, strength and variability of the higher nervous activities processing the signals. The users engaged into long practice at VGA appeared to choose blue screen with black characters.

[The physiological and hygienic problems of the computerization of school instruction].

The paper gives the findings of the long-term computer study of the influence of the lessons with computer on the functional state of schoolchildren of different ages. Regularities in the change of the working capacity and the functional state of children under the influence of computer lessons have been determined. It has been shown that the adaptation to computer activity takes place according to age. Schoolchildren aged 7 and 10-11 years have a lot of difficulties in adaptation. The degree of fatigue depends on the conditions of the lessons with computer, on the display type, duration, maintenance and regime of the lessons. The differential hygienic regulations of the optimum continuous duration of the lessons with computer during educational and extra educational time.

Software control procedures for treatment planning systems.

In radiotherapy treatment planning systems, the software programs as well as the beam data have to be updated frequently, when new software versions are released or as beam data change. This update procedure has to be carried out carefully, to ensure the integrity of the system software and data. Moreover, the version of software used for a particular patient treatment plan is important, not only as a record to be retrieved when necessary, but also when there are multiple terminals connected to the same computer. This process of version control is not always carried out in a systematic and standardized fashion. Most clinics often have their own systems to implement this procedure, but while some systems are comprehensive, others may not necessarily incorporate enough safeguards for errors. In addition, treatment planning system manufacturers often do not offer well-designed and fail-safe facilities for this important issue. This report describes the software update control procedures we have implemented on our treatment planning system as well as suggests some general principles that could be applied to other planning systems.

Local area networks for radiology.

This article is a tutorial on local area networks (LAN) for radiology applications. LANs are being implemented in radiology departments for the management of text and images, replacing the inflexible point-to-point wiring between two devices (computer-to-terminal). These networks enable the sharing of computers and computer devices, reduce equipment costs, and provide improved reliability. Any LAN must include items from the following four categories: transmission medium, topology, data transmission mode, and access protocol. Media for local area networks are twisted pair, coaxial, and optical fiber cables. The topology of these networks include the star, ring, bus, tree, and circuit-switching. Data transmission modes are either analog signals or digital signals. Access protocol methods include the broadcast bus system and the ring system. A performance measurement for a LAN is the throughput rate as a function of the number of active computer nodes. Standards for LANs help to ensure that products purchased from multiple manufacturers will operate successfully.

[Hygienic evaluation of the work of technical school students on the video display terminals].

Psychologic and hygienic examination of students working on display calculating complexes (DCC) DCC-2 and DCC-3 during the extra study time revealed the features of their functional status caused by the DCC design and work schedule. Positive role of eye exercises during the work was stressed. 6-hours duration of students' work was considered as unfavourable. The duration of work must be reduced to 3 hours, prophylactic measures (eye and physical exercises) are to be added.

[The function of the free-radical oxidation system in computer workers using video display terminals].

Programmers working with video-display terminals showed essential disorders of the functional state of the free-radical oxidation system indicating an essential overstrain of this system, presence of its latent insufficiency characteristic of activation of the lipid peroxidation. Chronic overstrain of the free-radical oxidation system may lead to decompensation and formation of a free-radical pathologic process. Prophylactic measures for this category of workers are recommended.
