[From ostracized to facially-injured subjects -- an example of social discrimination from the history of medicine].

The historical social situation and medical treatment of facially injured individuals is briefly summarized. Facially injured individuals were ostracized from society as a result of legal punishment, fear of contamination; or, because one believed that their injuries reflected a character-deficiency or even possession by evil spirits. In 1975, the term "defaced" (Entstellter) was replaced by the value-neutral description "facially injured" (Gesichtsversehrter).

Warty dyskeratoma.

A 43-year-old man with a crusted papule on the cheek was found to have a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Histologic examination of the skin lesion showed the characteristic features of warty dyskeratoma. A rare clinical photograph is presented and the clinical and histopathologic features are reviewed.

Facial blemishes and their treatment.

An approach to head and neck skin lesions is presented as an alternative to excisional surgery. Dermaplaning, curettage, electrodesiccation, cryosurgery, and chemosurgery are presented as alternative approaches to the eradication of selective skin lesions.
