One hundred thirty patients with lung cancer were studied to determine the incidence of unilateral thoracic soft-tissue accumulation (UTS) of 99mTc methylene diphosphonate (MDP). The finding was present in 60 of 130 (46%) of the patients. Of 52 patients who had received radiation therapy to the primary tumor in the chest, 46 (88%) had UTS, while six (12%) did not. Radiation therapy to lung tumors was the most significant of the factors studied in unilateral soft-tissue uptake of bone agent in the thorax of patients with lung cancer.
This case report of a metastasizing chondroblastoma with a review of the literature was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the biologic behavior of this exceedingly rare tumor and thus to facilitate its clinical management. The lung was by far the most frequent metastatic site. Thus, all 7 patients with a proven metastatic chondroblastoma recorded up to now including the present case had developed multiple pulmonary metastases. The interval between the initial diagnosis of the primary and manifestation of lung metastases proved to be long, with a mean of 8.4 years. The average survival time was at least 12.3 years. The mean interval between diagnosis of metastatic disease and death amounted to at least 6.3 years. The histomorphologic features of metastatic chondroblastoma, its local recurrences and of the metastatic lesions differed in no way from conventional chondroblastomas. Because of the lack of cellular criteria of malignancy it is impossible to predict the potential biologic behavior of chondroblastomas, in particular with respect to their ability to metastasize. However, the presence of tumor emboli in the primary lesion is highly suggestive of a subsequent development of metastatic disease. The delayed induction of hematogenous metastases is best explained by a limited growth potential of the tumor cells. In case of a large primary tumor--especially in flat bones--with soft tissue invasion or in the presence of tumor emboli an aggressive surgical approach is suggested. When lung metastases have developed their surgical removal is recommended to hopefully prolong live expectancy or even to obtain a curative effect.

Tissues of 38 varieties of human skeletal tumors were studied by a complex of biochemical assays. It was found that such biochemical parameter as concentration of connective tissue components points to the degree of malignancy. The peculiarities of biochemical characteristics of skeletal tumors are of importance in differential diagnosis and may be used in the examination of tissue specimens obtained by biopsy or during surgery.
The value of computed tomography in the diagnosis and management of lesions of the musculoskeletal system is being determined. Illustrative cases including a lipoma of the thigh, osteochondroma of the hip, simple cyst of the ilium, recurrent liposarcoma of the lumbar spine, desmoid tumor in the gluteal region, and postoperative interspace infection of the lumbar spine are presented to indicate the potential value of this procedure in the diagnosis and planning of treatment of musculoskeletal lesions.
We report three cases of para-articular chondroma and osteochondroma in the region of infrapatellar fat pad. All three lesions were resected and examined histologically. Two of them were primarily cartilaginous with a lobular pattern internally, and one uniformly osseous with peripheral cartilage. We conclude that these lesions are not the same. The former should be designated para-articular chondroma after Jaffe and the latter, osteochondroma.

SV40 footprints were investigated by PCR in normal human tissues and tumours of different histotypes, followed by Southern blot hybridization with a specific internal oligoprobe for SV40 DNA. Specific SV40 amplification products were detected at high prevalence in primary human brain tumours: 83% of choroid plexus papillomas, 75% ependymomas, 47% astrocytomas and 37% glioblastomas. SV40 footprints were also revealed in primary bone tumours: 35% osteosarcomas and Ewing's tumours. Positive normal tissue samples ranged from 45% of sperm fluids to 8% of brain tissue. Normal bone tissue specimens were SV40 negative. These results indicate that SV40 is associated with human brain and bone neoplasms, whereas normal bone and brain tissues were either SV40 negative or positive at low grade. SV40 footprints were found in other normal samples such as PBC, B- and T-lymphocytes and sperm fluids, indicating that SV40 is latent in these cells. Therefore, these cells may be vectors of SV40 in other host tissues and may spread SV40 infection by blood transfusion and sexual transmission in the human population.
Musculoskeletal neoplasms are rare, and both the medical history and complaints of the patients are usually uncharacteristic and of limited information. After a clinical evaluation and biplane conventional radiography, the clinician must classify the patient as having a nonprogressive or progressive primary benign, primary malignant, or metastatic bone tumor. In the case of a probably benign, nonprogressive bone tumor, the patient has to be observed continuously or an additional biopsy should be performed. In the case of a probably malignant lesion, the patient should be referred for further staging and treatment to an orthopedic oncologist. Conventional biplane radiography, scintiscan, computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are indispensable in staging and treatment planning for patients with musculoskeletal tumors. For limb salvage procedures, delineation of the tumor from adjacent tissue structures is crucial. Hence, MRI of the entire anatomic structure involved, together with adjacent joints, is of the utmost importance, both in the coronal and axial planes. The significance of MRI in clinical follow-up depends on keeping the sequences and imaging planes used constant. Differentiating pseudotumors from true neoplasms still poses a challenge. The cellular pattern and matrix characteristics of a lesion cannot definitely be identified as neoplastic even with application of all imaging modalities including MRI. Information on epidemiology, clinical picture, radiology, and histology of the lesion is necessary to draw a firm conclusion. Biopsy is still the first choice in making the diagnosis.
The giant-cell tumor in temporo-mandibular joint region and of temporal bone in 38 years old woman was described. The CO60 therapy was recommended with any success in tumor regression.
Thirty-three patients treated for tumors of the foot and ankle at one cancer institution over a 14-year period were reviewed. There were 15 females and 18 males, with an age range of 1 to 64 years (average 22.6 years). Twenty-one tumors were benign, 11 were malignant, and 1 tumor had metastasized. The most common diagnoses were: fibromatosis (10), aneurysmal bone cyst (4), synovial sarcoma (4), chondrosarcoma (3), and other (12). Surgical procedures included: wide resection (14), local resection (8), curettage and cryosurgery (7), and below-knee amputation (4). Follow-up from surgery was 1 to 13 years (average 7.2 years). There were no local recurrences. Functional results were good-to-excellent in 82% (27/33) of patients. Fifty-five percent (18/33) of the patients were full weightbearing and enjoyed unlimited activity.
