Arterial plasma immunoreactivity of endogenous human alpha-atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) underwent mean 54%, 28% and 40% extraction during one passage through the circulation in the kidney (n = 12), liver-intestine (n = 14) and lower limb (n = 8), respectively, in supine fasting subjects with no detectable disease or subjects with cardiovascular or hepatic disorders of minor degree undergoing a haemodynamic investigation. No extraction was identified across the lungs as evaluated by the same concentration of ANP in pulmonary and femoral arteries (n = 7). The concentration of ANP in a superficial arm vein relative to the femoral artery varied considerably and extractions from 0% up to 58% were identified (mean 18%). The results suggest a high degree of, but only to some extent selective, extraction of ANP, which may account for its proposed short plasma half-life. Due to the different concentrations of ANP in various vascular beds, sampling site should be thoroughly specified.

A pharmacological formulation derived from bovine blood was studied for species-specific substances, the problem being the low-molecular weight of its components. A detection of the species specificity for bovines was possible exclusively by the use of monovalent bovine-specific blood group sera. All other sera showed cross-reactions. Inhibition tests and blood-group-specific bovine test sera enabled us to identify the species specificity of bovines in the drug concentrate at dilutions up to 1/1,000 which are used as the basis for the production of the medication. The requirement of the German authorities (BGA) to examine the specificity of the identity in the medication can therefore be met by this immunobiological method.

Source water samples and outlet water samples from different treatment processes of the Beijing Ninth Water Works were concentrated in situ with XAD-2 filled columns. GC-MS analysis and toxic assessment including acute toxicity evaluation by luminescent bacterium bioassay(Q67 strains) and mutagenicity assessment by Ames test(TA98 and TA100 strains with and without S9 addition) were conducted on these samples. The results showed that prechlorination caused the direct and indirect frame shift mutagenicity as well as indirect base pair substitute mutagenicity. Addition of coagulant may increase the base pair substitute mutagenic effects greatly. Sand and coal filtration and granular activated carbon filtration could effectively remove most of the formed mutagens. The rechlorination do not obviously increase the mutagenic effects. No mutagenic effect was observed in tap water. Acute toxicity showed the same variation with that of mutagenicity during the treatment processes. Sample from flocculation treatment process was found to be the most toxic sample. Results of GC-MS analysis showed that water in this plant was not contaminated by PCB. Concentrations of toluene, naphthalene and phenol increased in flocculation treatment process and in tap water. However, the concentrations of these substances were at the level of microgram/L, therefore, were not high enough to cause mutagenicity.
