The transformation of the agricultural population and the urbanisation process in China.

"Nine causes for the occurrence of surplus agricultural labour with the modernisation of agriculture have been identified. Several solutions to this problem are presented. Urbanisation of the agricultural population in a way suited to China's characteristics is necessary, important and possible." An example of labor saving through mechanization in Heilongjiang province is presented.

Decree No. 966, 30 April 1988.

This Decree provides that the Executive Organ in the El Salvador Sector of Public Works is the body that will determine whether land is urban rather than nonurban and thus not subject to agrarian reform. Decisions of this body are to be final and cannot be modified by legal, judicial, or administrative order.

On rural urbanization in China.

The author reviews "the debate regarding rural urbanization in the Chinese literature and the political factions that support different positions. He also introduces us to the complexity of defining ¿urbanization' in a Chinese context. He cautions us in the use of the common but important yardsticks for measuring basic data, such as growth in the officially registered urban population or an increase in the number of rurally registered people who change to nonagricultural registration status, that is, urban-registered status (nong zhuan fei)." A comparison of urbanization in different prosperous areas is made.

The impact of China's rural industrialization upon the urbanization of population and its theoretical significance.

The author examines the impact of industrialization on urbanization and the rural structure in China. "The development of rural industries and industrialization of rural areas are the most feasible and effective ways to help in the transference of rural population and...urbanization. The growth of rural industries will help expand and re-direct rural labor from agricultural resources to non-agricultural resources, to the processing of farm produce and by-products, to pre- and pro-production services for agriculture and to cooperation with urban industries... The results will include the expansion of laboring fields, a more elaborate social division of labor, changes in social, economic and employment structures as well as an increase in employment opportunities...."
