Effects of nitrogen allocation and photosynthetic proteins response in peanut leaves on photosynthesis under conditions of water scarcity and nitrogen deficiency.

Leaf nitrogen allocation and photosynthetic proteins response can affect net photosynthetic rate (Pn), ultimately influencing crop yield under diverse environmental stresses. However, the internal relationship between Pn with leaf nitrogen allocation and photosynthetic proteins response under nitrogen or water scarcity in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) remains elusive. Here, comprehensive physiological property and proteomic analyses of peanut were conducted, revealing that both nitrogen and water scarcity remarkably impeded leaf growth and reduced Pn. Nitrogen deficiency significantly reduced the total nitrogen content per unit leaf area (Narea), chlorophyll content, and Pn, whereas drought stress caused a greater decline in photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). The allocation of leaf nitrogen to photosynthetic components, including the carboxylation system and electron transport system in leaves, was significantly reduced when subjected to individual or combined deficiency. Proteomic analyses exhibited that several key photosynthetic proteins underwent a decrease under both single and combined water and nitrogen deficiency conditions. Thereby, Pn may decline due to the disruption of nitrogen allocation and down-regulated expression of photosynthetic proteins under these stress conditions. Our findings establish a benchmark for future research exploring the roles of leaf nitrogen allocation and photosynthetic proteins in the plant's response to nitrogen or water deficiency.

[Relation of left and right axillary temperature with Yin-Yang and its guiding action on diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion].

Body temperature is one of the four physical signs and clinically, the axillary temperature is the most commonly used as the index of body temperature. The study on relation of the difference of the left and right axillary temperature with constitution types and diagnosis of diseases proves that the temperature of the left and right axillary is correlated with excess and insufficiency of Yin and Yang, namely, higher left axillary temperature is recognized as Yin-deficiency and Yang-excess, and higher right axillary temperature as Yang-deficiency and Yin-excess, and this can guide clinical syndrome differentiation treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion and individual diagnostic and therapeutic program can be established based on this.

[Relation of T-lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex groups of patients with chronic aplastic anemia].

The T-lymphocyte subsets of 38 patients with chronic aplastic anemia (CAA) were measured by monoclonal antibody (McAb) and ABC method and the relationship of T-lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex groups by traditional Chinese medicine theory were also analysed. It was shown that the T subsets of patients with CAA have remarkable changes: Ts (41.3 +/- 11.2%) increased more than the control (22.9 +/- 4.5%), Th/Ts decreased significantly more than the normal control (0.98 +/- 0.38 to 1.59 +/- 0.38). From the group of deficiency of both vital energy and blood to the group of deficiency of Kidney-yang to the group of deficiency of Kidney-Yin to the group of deficiency of both Kidney-Yang and Kidney-Yin, the Th lymphocyte gradually decreased, Ts lymphocyte successfully increased (from 33.8 +/- 7.9% to 57.7 +/- 7.5%), Th/Ts ratio declined (from 1.29 +/- 0.36 to 0.57 +/- 0.19). The Th/Ts ratio of the latter two groups decreased more than the former two groups (P less than 0.01). These results indicated that the T lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex group of patients with CAA were closely related and when deficient Yang affects Yin the immunologic function of body has a more obvious change. This revealed the connotation of Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang on the immuno-regulating cells (T lymphocyte subsets) level.

Complexities in ETS-domain transcription factor function and regulation: lessons from the TCF (ternary complex factor) subfamily. The Colworth Medal Lecture.

The ETS-domain transcription factor family can be divided into a series of subfamilies. Elk-1 represents the founding member of the ternary complex factor (TCF) subfamily. By focusing on the TCF subfamily, we can demonstrate the complexities that exist in the function and regulation of ETS-domain transcription factors. This article focuses on Elk-1 in detail and summarizes the functions of other TCFs. The key themes covered include the domain structure of the TCFs, the mechanisms of complex formation with serum response factor, regulation of TCFs by mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades, and transcriptional regulatory properties of the TCFs. Finally, the emerging role of the TCFs in vivo is discussed. A picture is developing indicating that, while these proteins exhibit significant sequence and functional conservation, key differences in their structure and regulation are being identified which may relate to unique functions of these proteins in vivo.

Psychology and Chinese medicine: exploring the mental, emotional and spiritual disharmonies of the Kidney energy system.

Drawing on his perspective as psychiatrist and longtime practitioner of Chinese medicine (CM), the author introduces his interpretation of the energy concepts of CM as they pertain to the psychology of man. This discussion focuses on the Water Element and Kidney energy system which are associated with supervision the genetic and intrauterine developmental phases of evolution. A faltering of these energies is associated with both pervasive and subtle neurological disorders and a predisposition to the most severe psychological disturbances. The manifestations and consequences are examined with case studies.

[Progress on the research of prevention and treatment of female climacteric syndrome by traditional Chinese medicine].

Perimenopause syndrome, referred also to climacteric syndrome, results from the changing of relationship among hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary during women's aging process. Those changes take place first in overy, then in hypothalmus and pituitary, which are reflected as the functional changes in endocrinological and central nervous system, accompanied with a series of psychological symptoms. 90% of women with perimenopause syndrome show clinical symptoms. The clinical prevention and treatment of female climacteric syndrome by traditional Chinese medicine: traditional Chinese medicine attributes the various symptoms of female climacteric syndrome to a variety of syndromes of Chinese medicine, e. g. gradual consumption of kidney-Qi, emptiness of the Ren and Chong channels, gradual exhaustion of Tienqui, breakdown of Yin-Yang equilibrium in the body, disorders of Zang-Fu, Qi and blood. The treatment based on syndrome differentiation, modification of prescription according to the symptoms, special prescription and simple recipe and acupuncture were employed in treating Yin-deficiency of the kidney, Yang-deficiency of the kidney, Yin and Yang-deficiency of the kidney, breakdown of the normal physiological coordination between the heart and the kidney, deficiency of liver-Yin and kidney-Yin, insufficiency of both the spleen and the kidney, deficiency of Qi and blood in the heart and spleen, stagnation of the liver-Qi and deficiency of the spleen, stagnation of the liver-Qi, phlegm stagnancy and the upward invasion of heat-phlegm. The traditional Chinese medicinal had a satisfactory global regulating effect on the nervous system and immune- regulating network with multifunction and unique advantage, e.g. its regulating effect on FSH, LH, E2, 5-HT, 5-HIAA, free radical and adtonomic nervous system. Experimental studies have also been conducted, e. g. There were also systematic studies of the simple Chinese drugs' pharmacodynamics and drugs forms of prepared drugs. In the health care of female climacteric syndrome the traditional Chinese medicine has also its own features and advantages.

[Experimental study on the treatment of hypertension with combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine].

In order to study the connection of diastolic activity of smooth muscles of blood vessels with development of hypertension, plasma cAMP, cGMP, TXB2, 6-K-PGF1 alpha, ANP, SP were determined with radioimmunoassay, of 173 hypertension patients with Liver Yang exuberance (LYE) 91 cases, and Yin deficiency and Yang exuberance (YDYE) 82 cases. In addition, 228 health subjects served as control. The results showed that the levels of cAMP, cGMP and TXB2 in both LYE and YDYE groups were higher than those in the control group, but the levels of ANP, SP and cAMP/cGMP ratio in LYE and YDYE groups were lower than those in the control. As to the level of 6-K-PGF1 alpha, no significant variance was found between these groups. After TCM-WM treatment, the levels of cAMP, cGMP and TXB2 in LYE and YDYE groups got down, as compared with those in the control, adversely the levels of ANP, SP and 6-K-PGF1 alpha in LYE and YDYE groups turned up significantly. However the cAMP/cGMP ratio had no remarkable change between these groups. The linear regression analyses between the diastolic pressure and ANP or SP both proved negative correlation (r = -0.36, P less than 0.05; r = -0.35, P less than 0.05). The findings indicated that the TCM-WM treatment was the most effective among the therapies employed in the study, and that this therapy affected the diastolic activity of smooth muscles by modulating the above factors existing in the nervous and endocrine systems of the patients with hypertension.

[Expression of bcl-2 gene in spleen deficiency syndrome in colorectal carcinoma and the regulatory effect of Jianpikangfu decoction].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome in colorectal carcinoma and bcl-2 gene expression, and observe the regulatory effect of Jianpikangfu decoction. METHODS: Forty-five advanced colorectal carcinoma patients with spleen deficiency were randomized into Jianpikangfu decoction treatment group with also symptomatic treatment with western medicine and control group in which the patients were given expectant treatment with western medicine. The activity of salivary amylase and bcl-2 expression in the tumor tissues were detected before and after the treatment. RESULTS: Jianpikangfu decoction in combination with western medicine treatment produced more obvious inhibition of reduction in salivary amylase activity than exclusive western medicine treatment (t=7.822, P<0.01), and significantly lowered the positivity rate of bcl-2 expression (chi2=4.286, P<0.05) in the tumor tissues, which, however, displayed no obvious changes in response to exclusive western medicine treatment. CONCLUSION: Jianpikangfu decoction can inhibit the decrease in salivary amylase activity and regulate bcl-2 gene expression in colorectal carcinoma patients with spleen deficiency syndrome.

Acupuncture treatment for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy--a case series.

Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) occurs in 10 to 20% of cancer patients treated with neurotoxic chemotherapy. A mixture of sensory, sensorimotor and autonomic nervous system dysfunction can occur, resulting in deterioration in function and worsened quality of life. A major feature is discomfort and pain. Early termination of treatment and dose reduction of chemotherapy may be necessary. The clinical course is variable and depends on the chemotherapy agents and their cumulative dose. Although symptoms can resolve completely, in most patients CIPN is either only partially reversible or completely irreversible. Current management for CIPN is symptomatic using membrane stabilising medications and antidepressants. The use of nerve growth factors is still experimental. Dysaesthesia and pain involving the feet and hands are described in both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western biomedicine. In TCM, the pathogenesis is related to the inability to direct Qi and Blood to the extremities, and is associated with Qi, Blood, Yang and Kidney deficiencies. Acupuncture is moderately effective in treating diabetic neuropathy. However, to date, there is no report of the usefulness of acupuncture for CIPN. We report the result of a pilot prospective case series of five patients treated with an acupuncture protocol that aims to correct Qi, Blood and Yang deficiencies and directs Qi and Blood to the extremities, with the goal of improving the symptoms of CIPN. The responses were encouraging, and cannot be easily explained by the known neurophysiological mechanisms of acupuncture.

[A preliminary study on hemodynamic changes of the heart-asthenia syndrome].

In this paper, hemodynamic changes of 254 subjects were observed by using impedance cardiogram in a double-blind control method. The subjects were divided into 5 groups: heart-asthenia syndrome (98 cases), lung-asthenia syndrome (23 cases), spleen-asthenia syndrome (23 cases), kidney-asthenia syndrome (10 cases) and normal group (100 cases). The results showed that hemodynamic abnormalities occurred in the patients with heart-asthenia syndrome only, the changed regularities were that deficiency of both vital energy and Yin greater than deficiency of heart-Yang greater than deficiency of heart-energy greater than deficiency of heart-Yin. When stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), cardiac index (CI), stroke volume index (SVI), heather index (HI), vascular compliance (C) and ejection fraction (EF) were decreased and total peripheral resistance (TPR) and systolic time interval (STI) were increased, the signs and heart-asthenia syndrome could be found in clinical practice. In conclusion, the above parameters had certain diagnostic value for heart-asthenia syndrome and could be subjective quantitative indices for evaluating effects of treating the heart-asthenia syndrome.

[Immunohistochemical study on the enteroendocrine cells of the small intestine in experimental spleen deficiency syndrome in rats].

50 adult Wistar male rats were used and divided into 4 groups, i.e. normal control group, experimental Spleen Deficiency group induced by rhubarb, spontaneous recovery group and therapeutic group treated with Chinese recipe (Si Jun Zi decoction). All the animals of the 4 groups were killed simultaneously, and the jejunum and ileum were removed and processed for demonstration of gastrin cells and 5-HT cells according to immunohistochemical PAP technique. In addition, HE stained samples were prepared. The immunoreactivities of the two types of enteroendocrine cells were observed and semiquantitative estimation were performed under light microscopy. In addition, the immunoreactivities of 5-HT cells in normal control and experimental Spleen Deficiency group were measured by microspectrocytophotometer (MPV 2, Leitz). All the data were treated statistically. This study revealed that there were no obvious histological changes in the mucosa among the 4 groups. In the jejunum, the percentage of gastrin cells(+) in experimental Spleen Deficiency group was more than that of the normal control group, while the percentage of gastrin cells( ) was less than that of the normal control group. As compared with spontaneous recovery group, it showed contrary to the above result in the therapeutic group. No gastrin cells were found in the ileum in all the 4 groups. the percentage of 5-HT cells did not show significant changes in the jejunum and ileum among the 4 groups. But immuno-reactivity in the 5-HT cell was less than that of the normal control group in the jejunum of the Spleen Deficiency group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Levels of sexual hormones in relation with syndrome-differentiation of TCM in patients of chronic renal failure.

Determinations of plasma levels of sexual hormones in 43 male patients of chronic renal failure showed that the content of testosterone (T) decreased markedly, while estradiol (E2) and E2/T ratio were obviously higher than in normal subjects, with no significant correlation between the levels of these sexual hormones and renal function. According to syndrome-differentiation of TCM, 17 of the 43 cases belonged to deficiency of Kidney-yang, and the other 26 cases deficiency of Kidney-yin. In the patients with deficiency of Kidney-yang, the E2 level was not increased, but the T content decreased to make the E2/T ratio apparently elevated; whereas in the patients with deficiency of Kidney-yin, both E2 and E2/T were elevated. The level of E2 in deficiency of Kidney-yin was markedly higher than that in deficiency of Kidney-yang. The results indicated that patients of chronic renal failure of the type of deficiency of Kidney-yang differed in syndrome as well as in levels of the sexual hormones from the type of deficiency of Kidney-yin; however, the sexual hormones were not correlated with the renal functions in the two types of patients.
