Aggressive periodontal destruction and herpes zoster in a suspected AIDS patient.

An unusual case of spontaneous and rapidly destructive lesions involving the periodontal structures is described in a 54 year old, bi-sexual patients suspected of having AIDS. Concomitant with the periodontal breakdown, the patient developed a severe case of Herpes Zoster involving the area of the face innervated by the 5th cranial nerve. The dermal lesions involved the face, nose, eyes and scalp. Similar lesions were noted on the gingival and palatal mucosa on the same side of the jaw as the skin lesions. The differences between this type of periodontal destruction and more conventional forms of periodontitis are discussed.

Periodontal splinting of anterior teeth.

Periodontal splinting is a misunderstood art form. Although the techniques require a high degree of clinical skill and diagnostic expertise, they save a significant number of teeth. This article provides step-by-step techniques for periodontal splinting using composite, intracoronal wire, extracoronal mesh, metal reinforcement and crown and bridge.

[Influence of surface conditions on the results of Periotest value. An in vitro and in vivo study].

In several experiments it was examined, whether slight deviations from the using reglementation for the PERIOTEST-device alter the measurement results. Tilting of the handpiece against ground or variation of the distance between handpiece and the surface of the tooth within the suggested intervals did not alter the PERIOTEST-value. If the measurement was done more incisal then specified, the PERIOTEST-value increased, if the measurement was done more cervical, the value decreased. Tilting the handpiece against the tooth surface within +/- 8 degrees in horizontal and +/- 6 degrees in vertical direction gave only little effect on the PERIOTEST-value on clinical firm upper front teeth.

The team approach to intermaxillary fixation.

A series of lawsuits for negligence was filed against a dentist who failed to consult with the family physician and other health-care providers before instituting intermaxillary fixation for the control of obesity. Additional allegations were lack of informed consent and lack of proper care. This article presents the case report, with emphasis on its physical, emotional, and legal outcome.

Extraction versus periodontal-orthodontic treatment: a case report.

This paper reports the management of a patient with severe localized periodontitis accompanied by drifting and extrusion of a central incisor. Although the traditional treatment approach to this condition often includes extraction and prosthetic replacement, the approach presented here provides an alternative to extraction by combining periodontal and orthodontic treatment.

Multiple therapy approach to juvenile periodontitis: a case report.

Various therapeutic techniques for the treatment of juvenile periodontitis are reported in the literature, with occasional contradictory results. One of the reasons for the contradictory results may be differences in patient selection and/or response to treatment. The following report describes the results of various treatment modalities, in different sites in the same individual, on localized juvenile periodontitis.

Effects of interdental osteotomies on the periodontal and osseous supporting tissues.

The effects of 40 interdental osteotomies on surrounding osseous and periodontal structures were evaluated clinically and radiographically. No statistically significant changes were noted in any of the clinical parameters except gingival height, which decreased slightly in the maxilla and increased in the mandible. These changes were found to be statistically significant, but not clinically significant, and are most likely explained by the direction of movement of the bony segment. Radiographic evaluations revealed no statistically significant changes other than an increase in interdental width in both the maxillary and mandibular sites. These measurements were made at the root level, and, although the crowns were moved closer, the roots may actually have flared apart because the anterior segment was tipped to upright the incisors. The lack of change in the other radiographic parameters indicated that there was no loss of alveolar bone support.

Effect of the major connector on abutment tooth and denture base movement: an in vitro study.

This in vitro study investigated the effect of the major connector on distal abutment tooth and denture base movements when loads were applied to a partial denture with extracoronal attachments. A brass mechanism was constructed for load application, and the abutment and base movements were measured in three planes using a kinesiograph. It was determined that cutting the major connector affected the degree of abutment tooth movement but not the direction. After cutting the major connector, the base movement increased in all three planes with the different forces applied. The direction of the base movement changes only in the buccolingual plane.
