Porcine SPDYA2 (RINGO A2) stimulates CDC2 activity and accelerates meiotic maturation of porcine oocytes.

RINGO, a protein with no homology to cyclin B, has been reported to be involved in activation of CDC2 and regulation of meiotic maturation in Xenopus oocytes. Although the presence of homologues of RINGO families, which are known as SPDY families, has been reported in mammals, their roles in meiotic maturation of mammalian oocytes have never been examined. In the present study, the effects of SPDY on meiotic maturation of porcine oocytes were examined. At first, Xenopus RINGO (xRINGO) mRNA was injected into immature porcine oocytes and found to significantly accelerate CDC2 activation and meiotic resumption. The CCNB (also known as cyclin B) synthesis was prematurely started at 12 h of culture, whereas it started at 18 h in normal oocytes. We next cloned RINGO A2 homologue in pig (pigSPDYA2) from total RNA of immature porcine oocytes by RT-PCR and obtained full-length cDNA that was more than 85% and 40% homologous with mammalian SPDYA2 and xRINGO, respectively. Acceleration effects similar to those by xRINGO were observed in CDC2 activation, meiotic resumption, and the start of CCNB synthesis in pigSPDYA2 mRNA-injected porcine oocytes. In clear contrast with the effects of xRINGO, which was accumulated abnormally in porcine oocytes and arrested them in the first meiotic metaphase (M1), pigSPDYA2 accelerated the meiotic progression, with about half of pigSPDYA2 mRNA-injected oocytes completing meiotic maturation within 30 h. These results suggest that pigSPDYA2 has important roles on meiotic maturation of porcine oocytes and that the rapid degradation of SPDY was necessary for the normal maturation of oocytes.

Acceleration of puberty in female mice by a chemosignal from pregnant and lactating females: circadian rhythm effects.

Two experiments were designed to test whether the urinary chemosignal excreted by pregnant and lactating female mice that accelerates puberty in young females is affected by circadian rhythms. The experiments also measured the possible influence of circadian rhythms on the response of the young recipient females. For urine from both pregnant and lactating females there was no difference in the effectiveness for accelerating puberty in urine collected during all 24 h. However, pregnancy urine used for treatment at 1800 and 0000 h, and lactation urine used for treatment at 1800, 0000 and 0600 h, all resulted in significantly earlier mean ages for puberty than pregnancy urine treatment at 0600 or 1200 h, or lactation urine treatment at 1200 h. There was also a significant interaction between the time of urine collection and the time of urine treatment for each urine source; urine was generally more effective in accelerating sexual development when used for treating young females at the same hour at which it had been collected, or at the time interval(s) just before or after the time at which it had been collected.

Acceleration of oviductal transport of oocytes induced by estradiol in cycling rats is mediated by nongenomic stimulation of protein phosphorylation in the oviduct.

In order to explore nongenomic actions of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in the oviduct, we determined the effect of E2 and P4 on oviductal protein phosphorylation. Rats on Day 1 of the cycle (C1) or pregnancy (P1) were treated with E2, P4, or E2 + P4, and 0.5 h or 2.5 h later their oviducts were incubated in medium with 32P-orthophosphate for 2 h. Oviducts were homogenized and proteins were separated by SDS-PAGE. Following autoradiography, protein bands were quantitated by densitometry. The phosphorylation of some proteins was increased by hormonal treatments, exhibiting steroid specificity and different individual time courses. Possible mediation of the E2 effect by mRNA synthesis or protein kinases A (PK-A) or C (PK-C) was then examined. Rats on C1 treated with E2 also received an intrabursal (i.b.) injection of alpha-amanitin (Am), or the PK inhibitors H-89 or GF 109203X, and 0.5 h later their oviducts were incubated as above plus the corresponding inhibitors in the medium. Increased incorporation of 32P into total oviductal protein induced by E2 was unchanged by Am, whereas it was completely suppressed by PK inhibitors. Local administration of H-89 was utilized to determine whether or not E2-induced egg transport acceleration requires protein phosphorylation. Rats on C1 or P1 were treated with E2 s.c. and H-89 i.b. The number and distribution of eggs in the genital tract assessed 24 h later showed that H-89 blocked the E2-induced oviductal egg loss in cyclic rats and had no effect in mated rats. It is concluded that E2 and P4 change the pattern of oviductal protein phosphorylation. Estradiol increases oviductal protein phosphorylation in cyclic rats due to a nongenomic action mediated by PK-A and PK-C. In the absence of mating, this action is essential for its oviductal transport accelerating effect. Mating changes the mechanism of action of E2 in the oviduct by waiving this nongenomic action as a requirement for E2-induced embryo transport acceleration.

Heparanase accelerates wound angiogenesis and wound healing in mouse and rat models.

Orchestration of the rapid formation and reorganization of new tissue observed in wound healing involves not only cells and polypeptides but also the extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironment. The ability of heparan sulfate (HS) to interact with major components of the ECM suggests a key role for HS in maintaining the structural integrity of the ECM. Heparanase, an endoglycosidase-degrading HS in the ECM and cell surface, is involved in the enzymatic machinery that enables cellular invasion and release of HS-bound polypeptides residing in the ECM. Bioavailabilty and activation of multitude mediators capable of promoting cell migration, proliferation, and neovascularization are of particular importance in the complex setting of wound healing. We provide evidence that heparanase is normally expressed in skin and in the wound granulation tissue. Heparanase stimulated keratinocyte cell migration and wound closure in vitro. Topical application of recombinant heparanase significantly accelerated wound healing in a flap/punch model and markedly improved flap survival. These heparanase effects were associated with enhanced wound epithelialization and blood vessel maturation. Similarly, a marked elevation in wound angiogenesis, evaluated by MRI analysis and histological analyses, was observed in heparanase-overexpressing transgenic mice. This effect was blocked by a novel, newly developed, heparanase-inhibiting glycol-split fragment of heparin. These results clearly indicate that elevation of heparanase levels in healing wounds markedly accelerates tissue repair and skin survival that are mediated primarily by an enhanced angiogenic response.-Zcharia, E., Zilka, R., Yaar, A., Yacoby-Zeevi, O., Zetser, A., Metzger, S., Sarid, R., Naggi, A., Casu, B., Ilan, N., Vlodavsky, I., Abramovitch, R. Uninterrupted moderately accelerated radiotherapy in the treatment of unresectable/advanced head and neck cancer: one institution's experience and a comparative review.

Conventional radiotherapy alone in treatment of unresectable or locally advanced head and neck cancer has poor results. To improve outcome without significant increase in acute and late morbidity, we began a moderately accelerated hyperfractionation radiation therapy protocol without breaks for treatment of unresectable/advanced head and neck malignancies. From August 1984 to June 1995, 48 patients with unresectable or advanced carcinoma of the head and neck were treated using a protocol of accelerated hyperfractionation radiation therapy at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Los Angeles. Patients were treated twice a day using 150 cGy per fraction, 4 days per week, to a final dose of 60 Gy. Two patients were excluded from this analysis because they did not complete treatment. With a median follow-up of 33 months, 31 (67%) patients have had disease recurrence, 30 (65%) of whom had a locoregional component to their failures. At the last follow-up, 12 patients (26%) were alive with no evidence of disease, 30 patients had died of disease, and 4 had died of intercurrent disease without recurrence. Nine (19%) patients required treatment interruptions averaging 8 days in duration. This accelerated regimen resulted in outcomes similar to those with conventional radiotherapy, most likely because of a conservative total dose. Further refinement of fractionation schedules with potential incorporation of chemotherapy must be investigated.

Duodenal ulcer. Discovery of a new mechanism and development of angiogenic therapy that accelerates healing.

The complete purification of the first angiogenic molecule, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), was carried out in the authors' laboratory in 1983. Application of this peptide to chronic wounds enhances angiogenesis and accelerates wound healing. The authors showed that an acid-stable form of bFGF (i.e., bFGF-CS23) could be administered orally to rats with duodenal ulcers. The peptide promoted a ninefold increase of angiogenesis in the ulcer bed and accelerated ulcer healing more potently than cimetidine. Basic fibroblast growth factor did not reduce gastric acid. The authors now show that bFGF exists as a naturally occurring peptide in rat and human gastric and duodenal mucosa. This endogenous bFGF is present also in the bed of chronic ulcers in rats. Sucralfate binds bFGF and protects it from acid degradation. The sucralfate is angiogenic, based on its affinity for bFGF. When sucralfate is administered orally to rats, it significantly elevates the level of bFGF in the ulcer bed. Cimetidine, by its capacity to reduce gastric acid, also elevates bFGF in the ulcer bed. A hypothetical model is proposed in which prevention of ulcer formation or accelerated healing of ulcers by conventional therapies may be FGF dependent. Acid-stable bFGF-CS23 may be considered as a form of replacement therapy in the treatment of duodenal ulcers.

Recombinant human growth hormone accelerates wound healing in children with large cutaneous burns.

OBJECTIVE: Two forms of recombinant growth hormone that accelerate the healing of skin graft donor sites in severely burned children were evaluated. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Growth hormone has been shown to reduce wound healing times in burned pediatric patients. Through genetic engineering, several different forms have been synthesized; however, not all are marketed currently. Two forms of growth hormone were used in these studies, Protropin (Genentech, Inc., San Francisco, CA), a commercially available product that possesses a N-terminal methionine residue not found in the second form Nutropin (Genentech, Inc., San Francisco, CA), which, as yet, is not commercially available. Through the use of recombinant human growth hormone, rapid wound healing may reduce the hypermetabolic period, the risk of infection, and accelerate the healing of donor sites used for grafting onto burned areas. The two structurally different forms of growth hormone were tested for their efficacy in healing donor sites in severely burned children. METHODS: Forty-six children, with a > 40% total body surface area and > 20% total body surface area full-thickness burn were entered in a double-blind, randomized study to receive rhGH within 8 days of injury. Twenty received (0.2 mg/kg/day) Nutropin or placebo by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection beginning on the morning of the initial excision. Eighteen patients who failed the entry criteria for receiving Nutropin received Protropin therapeutically (0.2 mg/kg/day). Donor sites were harvested at 0.006 to 0.010 inches in depth and dressed with Scarlet Red impregnated fine mesh gauze (Sherwood Medical, St. Louis, MO). The initial donor site healing time, in days, was reached when the gauze could be removed without any trauma to the healed site. RESULTS: Donor sites in patients receiving Nutropin (n = 20) or Protropin (n = 18) healed at 6.8 +/- 1.5 and 6.0 +/- 1.5 (mean +/- SD) days, respectively, whereas those receiving placebo (n = 26) had a first donor site healing time of 8.5 +/- 2.3 days. Both groups receiving rhGH showed a significant reduction in donor site healing time compared with placebo at p < 0.01. When subgroups were compared, no difference in healing times could be shown with regards to age or time of admission after injury. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that both forms of rhGH are effective in reducing donor site healing time compared with placebo and suggest that accelerating wound healing is of clinical benefit because the patients' own skin becomes rapidly available for harvest and autografting. With this increase in the rate of wound healing, the total length of hospital stay can be reduced by more than 25%.

Status of accelerated fractionation radiotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Considerable interest has been shown in recent years about hyperfractionated and accelerated radiation therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. The first randomized trial showing an advantage for hyperfractionation in terms of tumor control was the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer 22791 trial. More recently, accelerated radiotherapy has been tested in many studies showing that high total doses of radiation could be delivered in overall treatment time shorter than conventional radiation therapy. The benefit of accelerated radiation therapy has been reported in some recently completed randomized trials, which suggests that rapid repopulation of surviving tumor cells during radiation therapy is a major determinant to obtain cure in this type of cancer.

Magnesium and manganese ions accelerate tissue factor-induced coagulation independently of factor IX.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of magnesium and manganese ions on tissue factor (TF)-induced coagulation and the possible role of factor IX therein. When magnesium chloride or manganese chloride were added in low concentrations to normal human plasma, the human (recombinant) TF-induced coagulation time was shortened. At higher concentrations, magnesium and manganese prolonged the TF-induced coagulation time. Maximum shortening of the coagulation time was obtained at a concentration of 0.5 mmol/l Mn or 2 mmol/l Mg in plasma. Shortening of the TF-induced coagulation time by magnesium and manganese was also observed in factor IX-deficient plasma. A comparison was made between TF preparations from human, rabbit, and bovine brain. The accelerating effect of magnesium was greater with human than with rabbit brain TF. Using bovine brain TF, the clotting time was not shortened by magnesium. Activated factor X-induced coagulation of normal plasma was not accelerated by magnesium. From these experiments, it is inferred that activation of factor X by factor VII-TF can be accelerated by magnesium and manganese ions independently of factor IX.

Thrombomodulin accelerates activated protein C production and inhibits thrombin generation in the plasma of disseminated intravascular coagulation patients.

Thrombomodulin (TM) has been under development as a medicine for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and is expected to exhibit strong anticoagulant activity by inhibiting thrombin generation via the acceleration of protein C activation. In the present study, we examined the pharmacological action of TM in plasma obtained from DIC patients. TM was found to inhibit thrombin generation and accelerate activated protein C (APC) production at 0.3-30 TM units/ml in plasma obtained from DIC patients irrespective of their underlying disorders. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the inhibition of thrombin generation and the amount of APC produced. Thrombin generation was inhibited by over 50% when the plasma level of APC was increased by more than 0.2 microg/ml. These results indicate that TM inhibits thrombin generation in plasma obtained from DIC patients by accelerating APC production. Moreover, the results imply that the thrombin generation test may be a good method to speculate the efficacy of TM on every patient before the administration of TM.

The effect of linear contrast flow acceleration on catheter tip recoil in selective arteriography.

We investigated the effect of the device known as the linear accelerator flow control (linear-rise) available on some angiographic power injectors used for delivering contrast medium. Its influence on catheter tip recoil during selective arteriography was evaluated in two glass models, which simulated assessment of catheter position in visceral and cerebral arterial branches. Contrast medium was injected over a clinical range with and without the linear flow accelerator in operation. Biplane high speed video recordings simultaneously referenced time in thousandths of seconds and the catheter position. The linear flow accelerator failed to prevent, but did delay, catheter tip recoil in proportion to the prolongation of contrast medium injection time. These laboratory results conformed with the findings of catheter behavior during similar experiments in animals undergoing arteriography.

Non-invasive ultrasonic study of maximal aortic blood acceleration in patients with borderline and sustained essential hypertension.

Using a pulsed Doppler method to evaluate the aortic velocity curve transcutaneously, the maximal aortic blood acceleration was evaluated in normal subjects and in age-matched patients with borderline and sustained essential hypertension. Maximal aortic blood acceleration was significantly elevated in patients with borderline hypertension and remained within the normal range in patients with sustained hypertension. Since maximal aortic blood acceleration is relatively insensitive to preload and afterload, these findings might give indirect information on the contractile state of the myocardium in patients with hypertension.

Dietary fiber, psyllium, attenuates salt-accelerated hypertension in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

OBJECTIVE: Although dietary fiber, psyllium seed husk (psyllium), is known to reduce blood glucose and lipid levels, the effect of psyllium on blood pressure elevation induced by salt ingestion has not been tested in human and rats. We observed the effect of psyllium on salt-accelerated hypertension in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). METHODS: Forty male SHRSP (6 weeks of age) were divided into four groups: a plain laboratory diet (PL) group, groups receiving the PL diet substituted with 3% or 10% of psyllium, and a group fed the PL with 10% of cellulose. All those groups were given 0.5% salt water for drinking during the experiment. Urine and feces were collected during 24 hours with a metabolic cage on the 22nd and 29th days of experiment, and sodium and potassium were determined. On the 30th day of the experiment, five rats in each group were killed and heart weight was measured. RESULTS: Salt-accelerated hypertension was significantly attenuated in the SHRSP fed with 3% and 10% psyllium diets compared to those fed the PL and 10% cellulose diets (15th, 22nd, 29th day; 10% psyllium versus PL or 10% cellulose, P < 0.05, 29th day; 3% psyllium versus PL or 10% cellulose, P < 0.05). Ventricular weight was decreased in rats fed 3% or 10% psyllium diets. The amount of sodium, the amount of sodium/the intake of sodium and the sodium/potassium ratio in the feces were significantly increased in the groups on 3% and 10% psyllium diets both on the 22nd and 29th days of experiment compared with those on PL and 10% cellulose diets. CONCLUSIONS: The psyllium diet attenuated the salt-accelerated hypertension in SHRSP by a possible mechanism of increased fecal excretion of sodium absorbed into the psyllium.

Non-invasive low-intensity pulsed ultrasound accelerates bone healing in the rabbit.

The effect of ultrasound (US) on the rate of fibula osteotomy healing in 139 mature New Zealand white rabbits was assessed in this study. Bilateral midshaft fibular osteotomies were made using a 1-mm Gigli saw. US was noninvasively applied to one limb for 20 minutes daily, while the contralateral limb served as a control. A 2.5-cm PZT transducer was applied to both limbs, with the treated limb receiving a 200-microseconds burst of 1.5-MHz sine waves repeated at 1.0 kHz. The incident intensity was approximately 30 mW/cm2. Animals were killed at intervals between 14 and 28 days. Maximum strength increases (significant to p less than or equal to 0.01) ranged from 40 to 85% from postoperative day 14 to 23. On day 28, no significant difference in ultimate strength was noted. From day 17 through day 28, all US-treated fractures were as strong as intact bones (p less than or equal to 0.005). On the other hand, the ultimate strength of the control osteotomies attained intact values only by day 28. These results indicate that biomechanical healing is accelerated by a factor of nearly 1.7. This occurs with an overall acceleration of the healing curve in this fresh fracture model. If noninvasive low-intensity pulsed sine wave ultrasound can significantly accelerate bone repair in clinical application with an in-home treatment of 20 minutes daily, then US may be a useful adjunct for fracture care with a concomitant impact on patient morbidity.

Propranolol diminishes cardiac hypertrophy but does not abolish acceleration of the ischemic contracture in hyperthyroid hearts.

This study was undertaken to define the contributions of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and increased adrenergic activity to the acceleration of ischemic contracture (IC) that occurs in chronic hyperthyroid rat heart. Acute and chronic hyperthyroidism (THYR) were induced by thyroxine administration for 2 and 14 days, respectively, and normal animals (NORM) served as controls. Isolated hearts were perfused in a Langendorff mode. NORM alpha acute, n = 6; THYR alpha acute, n = 8; and THYR alpha, n = 13; and NORM alpha, n = 13 were subjected to 20-min zero-flow global ischemia (I) and 45-min reperfusion (R). Additional THYR and NORM hearts treated with propranolol (prop) were subjected to 30-min I; THYR beta prop, n = 6 and NORM beta prop, n = 8, and THYR beta, n = 6, NORM beta, n = 8 served as controls. Acceleration of IC was measured by the time to peak contracture (Tmax). Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) was assessed by the ratio of left ventricular weight in milligrams (LVW) to animal body weight (BW) in grams. Cardiac hypertrophy developed in chronic but not acute hyperthyroidism. Propranolol reduced the extent of LVH. Contracture occurred earlier in chronic than in acute hyperthyroid and normal hearts. Propranolol did not alter contracture. In conclusion, IC is accelerated by thyroxine administration, and this is probably not due to LVH or increased beta-adrenergic activity. Propranolol diminishes LVH in hyperthyroidism.

Ultrasound accelerates functional recovery after peripheral nerve damage.

OBJECTIVE: Axonal injury in the peripheral nervous system is common, and often it is associated with severe long-term personal and societal costs. The objective of this study is to use an animal model to demonstrate that transcutaneous ultrasound can accelerate recovery from an axonotmetic injury. METHODS: The sciatic nerve of adult male Lewis rats was crushed in the right midthigh to cause complete distal degeneration of axons yet maintain continuity of the nerve. Beginning 3 days after surgery, various transcutaneous ultrasound treatments or sham treatments were applied 3 days per week for 30 days to the crush site of rats that were randomly assigned to two groups. In the preliminary experiments, there were three animals in each ultrasound group and two control animals. In the final experiment, there were 22 animals in the ultrasound group and 20 animals in the control group. Recovery was assessed by use of a toe spread assay to quantify a return to normal foot function in the injured leg. Equipment included a hand-held transducer that emitted continuous-wave ultrasound. The most successful ultrasound protocol had a spatial peak, time-averaged intensity of 0.25 W/cm2 operated at 2.25 MHz for 1 minute per application. RESULTS: Rats subjected to the most successful ultrasound protocol showed a statistically significant acceleration of foot function recovery starting 14 days after injury versus 18 days for the control group. Full recovery by the ultrasound group occurred before full recovery by the control group. CONCLUSION: Transcutaneous ultrasound applied to an animal model of axonotmetic injury accelerated recovery. Future studies should focus on identification of the mechanism(s) by which ultrasound creates this effect, as a prelude to optimization of the protocol, demonstration of its safety, and its eventual application to humans.

The occurrence of simultaneous fetal heart rate accelerations in twins during nonstress testing.

A prospective study was performed of 152 pairs of nonstress tests (NSTs) obtained simultaneously from both members of 52 twin gestations. Fifty-seven percent of the total fetal heart rate (FHR) accelerations occurred simultaneously in both twins. Between twins, the incidence of simultaneously occurring FHR accelerations was independent of gestational age, growth discordancy, or the type of placenta. For each twin, the number of FHR accelerations remained constant with increasing gestational age. These results may suggest that tactile communication exists in utero between twins.

Combined magnetic fields accelerate and increase spine fusion: a double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study.

STUDY DESIGN: The clinical study conducted was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined magnetic fields on the healing of primary noninstrumented posterolateral lumbar spine fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Combined magnetic fields, a new type of biophysical stimulus, have been shown to act by stimulating endogenous production of growth factors that regulate the healing process. This is the first placebo-controlled study to assess the effect of an electromagnetic stimulus on primary noninstrumented posterolateral lumbar spine fusion surgery as well as the first evaluation of combined magnetic fields as an adjunctive stimulus to lumbar spine fusion. METHODS: This multicenter investigational study was conducted at 10 clinical sites under an Investigational Device Exemption from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Eligible patients had one-level or two-level fusions (between L3 and S1) without instrumentation, either with autograft alone or in combination with allograft. The combined magnetic field device used a single posterior coil, centered over the fusion site, with one 30-minute treatment per day for 9 months. Randomization was stratified by site and number of levels fused. Evaluation was performed 3, 6, and 9 months after surgery and 3 months after the end of treatment. The primary endpoint was assessment of fusion at 9 months, based on radiographic evaluation by a blinded panel consisting of the treating physician, a musculoskeletal radiologist, and a spine surgeon. RESULTS: Of 243 enrolled patients, 201 were available for evaluation. Among all patients with active devices, 64% healed at 9 months compared with 43% of patients with placebo devices: a significant difference (P = 0.003 by Fisher's exact test). Stratification by gender showed fusion in 67% of women with active devices, compared with 35% of those with placebo devices (P = 0.001 by Fisher's exact test). By contrast, there was not a statistically significant effect of the active device in this male study population. In the overall population of 201 patients, repeated measures analyses of fusion outcomes (by generalized estimating equations) showed a main effect of treatment, favoring the active treatment (P = 0.030). In a model with main effect and a time by treatment interaction, the latter was significant (P = 0.024), indicating acceleration of healing. Performed in the full sample of 243 patients, results of the intent-to-treat analysis were qualitatively the same as in the evaluable sample of 201 patients. DISCUSSION: This investigational study demonstrates that combined magnetic field treatment of 30 min/d increases the probability of successful spine fusion, and statistical analysis using the generalized estimating equations model suggests an acceleration of the healing process. This is the first randomized clinical trial of noninstrumented primary posterolateral lumbar spine fusion, with evaluation by a blinded, unbiased panel. This is the first double-blind study performed to date assessing noninstrumented fusion outcome with extremely critical radiographic criteria. The lower overall fusion rates in this study are attributed to the high-risk patient group with an average age of 57 years, the use of noninstrumented technique with posterolateral fusion only, and the reliance on extremely critical radiographic and clinical criteria and blinded panel for fusion assessment without surgical confirmation. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the adjunctive use of the combined magnetic field device was statistically beneficial in the overall patient population, as has been shown in previous studies of adjunctive bone growth stimulation for spine fusion. For the first time, stratification of fusion success data by gender demonstrated that the female study population responded positively to the adjunctive combined magnetic field treatment, with no statistically significant effect observed in the male study population. Adjunctive use of the combined magnetic field device significantly increased the 9-month success of radiographic spinal fusion and showed an acceleration of the healing process.
