Pyromania and the primal scene: a psychoanalytic comment on the work of Yukio Mishima.

In the writings of the Japanese novelist, Yukio Mishima, primal scene experiences and derivative expressions of them recur persistently. The element of fire figures prominently in connection with the wish to wreak vengeance on the persons originally observed in the act of intercourse. As a destructive, attention-compelling spectacle, fire is a particularly suitable vehicle for this purpose. In Mishima's works, revenge takes the form of retaliation in kind: parental figures, or their surrogates, are put into the position of having to observe the child, or substitutes for him, in the act of sexual infidelity. These observations as well as clinical reports in the literature suggest some insights into fantasies of pyromania. They also make possible certain speculations concerning Misima's turbulent life and dramatic suicide.

Pharmacologic basis and treatment of cigarette smoking.

Data are reviewed which support the contention of the American Psychiatric Association and the U.S. Public Health Service that cigarette smokers may become addicted to nicotine. Available data indicate that 1) tobacco use shares many factors in common with previously studied forms of drug abuse--most notably, narcotic addiction, 2) the rate and pattern of cigarette smoking are partially determined by nicotine dose level, and 3) nicotine meets established criteria for a prototypic drug of abuse. These findings have implications for the understanding and treatment not only of cigarette smoking but of other forms of drug abuse and psychiatric disorders in which tobacco use is a cofactor.

Case report of an obsessive-compulsive personality: a precurser to accident proneness.

The social/physiological/psychological review of an aircraft accident involving input of incorrect controls and low-altitude ejection of a student naval aviator enlightened the investigators as to maybe a not-so-uncommon problem--accident proneness resulting from an obsessive-compulsive nonpsychotic personality. Review of the pilot's history reflected a perfectionist attitude since childhood with continuous associated near-serious accidents. Flight training revealed occurrences of over-correction, channelized attention, and denial of errors. With the demands of Naval Aviation that spurs the growth of the perfectionist, normal/abnormal parameters of obsession-compulsion as they present themselves must be cautiously examined.
