RegRand: statistical software for the multiple-baseline design.

RegRand (Version 1.0) is Macintosh-based software that enables a researcher to conduct a non-parametric statistical analysis of the data from Koehler and Levin's (1998) recently described regulated randomization single-case multiple-baseline design. Regulated randomization design and analysis principles are reviewed in relation to an educational research application and a step-by-step illustration of them in relation to the RegRand program is presented.

Fluorescent dual colour 2D-protein gel electrophoresis for rapid detection of differences in protein pattern with standard image analysis software.

The use of two different fluorescent dyes in two-dimensional (2D) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was recently described and termed difference gel electrophoresis (DIGE). Thereby differences between protein samples could be accomplished by fluorescently tagging the samples with different dyes as well as co-separation and visualisation in a single gel. We adapted this method to the ampholyte technique, using newly available fluorescent dyes and three common image software systems for analysis. Working with protein lysates from tumour cell lines with defined added proteins we found that the technique is reproducible, sensitive and fast, because it circumvents the necessity of matching several 2D gels. This is mainly due to the fact that the generated images from the two different fluorescent channels could be superimposed by standard image analysis, so that changes in the protein pattern could be easily detected either by a different colour or by comparing grey values of corresponding spots. This method will be especially helpful in comparing proteins from normal and tumour tissue to highlight changes in genesis and progression in cancer.

[Construction of a bed management system using widely available software: departmental information integration including the department of radiological technology].

In recent years, the distribution of medical information through Internet technology has been increasingly promoted as a result of the December 2001 initiative of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare known as "the grand design for the application of welfare and medical care information technology in the field of health." In June 1999, we developed a bed management system that uses a local area network (LAN). The ultimate goals of this systems configuration were the development of an order-entry system, an electronic health-record system, and improved information sharing. The system, which was created by employing widely used software, rationalized daily work by integrating patient information, hospitalization information, radiological examination reservation information, physiological examination reservation information, and rehabilitation reservation information. The radiological examination reservation information system that our radiology department uses is one of these systems. Electronic preservation of the reservation list is carried out in the radiology department, and information on examinations is input. The resulting full-scale order-entry system was introduced in July 2002, and it has improved the sharing of information among staff members.

Analysing audio-recorded data: using computer software applications.

Conventional methods of qualitative data analysis require transcription of audio-recorded data prior to conduct of the coding and analysis process. In this paper Alison Hutchinson describes and illustrates an innovative method of data analysis that comprises the use of audio-editing software to save selected audio bytes from digital audio recordings of meetings. The use of a database to code and manage the linked audio files and generate detailed and summary reports, including reporting of code frequencies according to participant code and/or meeting, is also highlighted. The advantage of using this approach in the analysis of audio-recorded data is that the process may be undertaken in the medium in which the data were collected. Though time-consuming, this process negates the need for expensive and time intensive transcription of recorded data.

Software. It's worthless without the vendor's commitment to performance.

When a home health agency purchases software, it also buys a five-year relationship with the vendor for maintenance support and services. It is paramount for the home care agency to examine key attributes of the vendor, including its financial stability, market presence, profile of other clients, installation schedule, customer support services, and willingness to enhance products.

Distributive and clinical activity measurement using spreadsheet software.

Documentation of distributive and clinical activities is an important factor in maintaining and expanding pharmacy services. In order to illustrate the impact of pharmacists' efforts on risk management and the reduction of drug costs, the pharmacy must effectively monitor workload. This report describes a method to identify and estimate time required for both distributive and clinical functions. Tabulation of the distributive work units is automated through the hospital billing system. Clinical monitors are dependent on manual documentation by decentralized clinical pharmacists. The clinical coordinator and the pharmacy director review the documented clinical monitors to insure compliance and standardization. Productivity and workload calculations are performed automatically via the spreadsheet software once all the distributive and clinical units are entered. Identifying clinical functions and measuring the associated workload has aided in justifying new positions. Future considerations include calculating the impact of clinical services on revenues, expenses, and staffing.

Product matrix: materiel management information systems. A look into the 90s: software catches up with hardware.

As always, you'll have to fight for the dollars to buy systems, competing with departments who produce revenue. Financial managers and hospital boards respond most favorably to a good return on investment (ROI) presentation. Join forces with your software vendor of choice and give your board the best ROI argument they'll hear this year. Keep two things in mind: 1) today's innovations, particularly in reducing inventory, interfacing and lower hardware costs will help you make your case and 2) make sure the system is growing consistent with the industry to ensure you won't be asking for a similar purchase three years from now.

Evaluation of drug-food/nutrient interactions microcomputer software programs.

Eight drug-food/nutrient interaction microcomputer software programs were evaluated and compared using specific criteria defined for these programs. This article summarizes and compares the features, ratings, advantages, and disadvantages of each program. There are no excellent drug-food/nutrient interactions programs. Three programs performed equally well and should be considered. These are Medicom Micro, Drug Therapy Screening System and RxTriage.

Software upgrade can end with hard landing.

A hospital's plan to switch over to the latest version of software for its information systems often can result in a nasty surprise--the facility's hardware isn't up to the task, and the solution will cost a bundle, often hundreds of thousands of dollars. Providing your vendor with thorough and precise data can help avoid such pitfalls.

Drug interaction microcomputer software evaluation: drug interaction facts on disk.

Drug Interaction Facts on Disk (DIF) was evaluated using general and specific criteria. The installation process, ease of learning and use, the user documentation, and the technical support were rated excellent. The scope of coverage, the quality of the clinical documentation, and overall clinical performance were also excellent. The frequency of updates is good. The program's clinical performance was compared to RxTriage and Drug Therapy Screening System using five recently reported drug interactions. The ability to screen for selected drug-food/nutrient interactions was also evaluated. Drug Interaction Facts is rated to be one of the better bargains in drug interaction software programs.

Use of database management software in a management information system.

If information is to play a useful role in the decision making process, an organization must design a system for capturing, organizing and presenting information from daily activities to its managers. Use of relational database management software to design a custom application as part of a management information system is both practical and cost effective. Designing a database management application is very challenging but well worth the effort, asserts the author of this case study.
