In this investigation the indirect fluorescent antibody technique was used to titrate antibodies in bovine sera to parainfluenza 3, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus and bovine viral diarrhea virus. These results were compared to those determined on the same samples by hemagglutination inhibition for parainfluenza 3 virus and serum neutralization for bovine virus diarrhea and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. The results of the serological methods agreed closely. The indirect fluorescent antibody technique is a rapid and sensitive method for detecting antibodies and the procedure lends itself to use in diagnostic laboratories. In addition to the above viruses the presence or absence of antibodies to bovine coronavirus and bovine adenovirus 3 were determined by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique in thoracic fluids from 100 aborted fetuses and 50 nonaborted fetuses. Results on these samples were not compared to hemagglutination inhibition or serum neutralization as the condition of fluid samples from aborted fetuses renders interpretation of such tests unreliable. Antibodies to one or more viruses were detected in 30 of the 100 aborted fetuses and in seven of the 50 nonaborted fetuses. Antibodies to more than one agent were detected in eleven of the 100 aborted and in one of the 50 nonaborted fetuses. Reasons for this occurrence and application of the test in determination of causes of abortion are discussed.
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is the most prevalent pathogen in cattle and causes significant economic losses due to its severe clinical manifestations. It belongs to the family Flaviviridae and is distributed in species A, B, and H within the genus Pestivirus. The objective of this study was to detect and characterize BVDV using molecular techniques (RT-PCR) in semen and aborted fetuses samples that were sent to the CEDIVEP (Veterinary Diagnostic Center of Paraguay) laboratory. Seventy-three samples of semen from bulls were analyzed, and 54.7% of the samples were positive for Pestivirus A. The presence of Pestivirus A and H was detected in 2/8 spontaneously aborted fetuses. The genotypes of four individual samples of type A and four samples of type H organs were confirmed by partial sequencing of the 5-UTR region. The presence of BVDV was confirmed by molecular techniques for the first time in our country through its detection in different types of samples, as well as the presence of two genotypes. This suggests that the circulation of this virus can cause significant losses in cattle production in Paraguay.
Leptospires were demonstrated in five aborted fetuses and in a premature calf. Evidence is presented to indicate that a member of the Hebdomadis serogroup was the causative agent.
Confirmation of cytogenetically abnormal fetuses following saline abortion has been shown to be possible with the placenta as the source of viable fetal cells. The method is described in detail. In one third of cultures, only female cells were present. Differentiation between maternal and female fetal tissue when no numerical or structural cytogenetic disorder is present requires detailed analysis of fluorescently stained chromosomes for polymorphisms.
A well expressed correlation was found to exist between the immunofluorescence and the histologic methods in the demonstration of IBR-IPV infection of fetuses and placentae in 75 cases of spontaneous undiagnosed abortions. If those that were positive by the immunofluorescence method were 100 per cent as many as 87 per cent of them showed coincidence with the results obtained by the histologic method. The isolation of the virus of IBR-IPV coincided in 44 per cent of the cases only. Clearest specific fluorescence, established most frequently, was demonstrated in the kidneys of the fetuses. It was found that contrast staining with Evans blue effectively inhibited the unspecific fluorescence. Exceptions in this respect were observed with some preparations of liver, lung, and placental tissues, where there were cells of unspecific fluorescence, which, by its character and localization differed essentially from the fluorescence that was specific for IBR-IPV. It is assumed that the immunofluorescence method performed at contrast staining with Evans blue makes possible the fast and precise diagnosis of IBR-IPV.

Partial trisomy 18 is described in a two month old female with severe mental, motor and growth retardation, associated with multiple congenital anomalies characteristic of complete trisomy 18. Trisomy for almost all of 18q resulted from adjacent I segregation of a paternally inherited translocation t(13; 18)(q32:q11). The balanced translocation was observed in three generations of the family. Partial trisomy 18q identical to that observed in the proband was found in a subsequent miscarriage.
Among 57 spontaneously aborted fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) ranging from 30 to 180 mm, 5 were found to have cardiovascular malformations. The number of cases with cardiovascular malformations (numerator) and the number of observed fetuses (denominator) classified according to their CRL were as follows: CRL 30-49 mm, 1/9 (persistent left superior vena cava); 50-69 mm, 4/11 (one case each of membranous VSD with aberrant right subclavian artery, high muscular VSD, pulmonary stenosis with muscular VSD and overriding aorta, right aortic arch with membranous VSD); 70-99 mm, 0/7; 100-139 mm, 0/16; 140-180 mm, 0/14. The above results clearly show a high prevalence of cardiovascular malformations in spontaneously aborted fetuses with a CRL of less than 70 mm. The practicability and potential value of microdissection of small fetuses are stressed.
Antibodies to Leptospira serotypes were detected in sera from 15 (6.9 per cent) of 218 aborted fetuses, but were not detected in the sera from 196 non-aborted fetuses. Fourteen (6.4 per cent) sera from the aborted fetuses had antibodies to strains belonging to the Hebdomadis serogroup and 1 (0.5 per cent) had antibodies to a strain belonging to the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup. These antibodies were predominantly immunoglobulin M whereas in the dams, antibodies belonged to both immunoglobulin M and G classes.

The second case of bovine abortion caused by Torulopsis glabrata observed in examining more than 5000 fetuses is reported. The yeast was cultured from fetal abomasal content and fetal lung; attempts to isolate viruses and bacteria were unsuccessful. The yeast was seen in association with diffuse fetal pneumonia characterized by presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages within bronchioles, alveolar lumina and alveolar septa. Macrophages containing many yeast cells were observed within bronchioles.

Five adenoviral strains, typed as adenovirus type 1, were isolated from aborted cattle foetuses, taken from farms with abortions in cows. The viruses were isolated from kidneys, lungs and livers of the foetuses. They were isolated from the kidney most frequenty (three strains). Intranuclear basophilic inclusions in the alveolar epithelium of the lungs and in the tubular epithelium of the kidneys have been established in the histological investigations of the internal organs of the foetuses. The isolation of adenoviruses from foetuses has been discussed as an infectious process, emerging as a result of a transplacental infection.
