Nurses employed in a variety of positions can benefit from knowledge generated by studies other than clinical nursing research. If the study contributes primarily to nursing and if the study provides the candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate research competence, this author supports accepting dissertation topics in nursing administration and nursing education, as well as clinical nursing practice.
The titles of a substantial sample of articles related to speech pathology and audiology over a period of 21 years were catalogued under one or more of 10 categories, e.g., normal audition, defective phonation, and the like. The titles of theses and dissertations in this field of six universities of Ohio over the same period were also catalogued. The articles appeared in 17 journals. The journals were treated as seven groups of "related" journals. The total output of journals was stable over the period studied; a "group" of journals tended to be consistent with itself over successive 3-year periods; the seven groups of journals tended to be unique, and not to replicate each other. The topics treated in the journals were accepted as a criterion for contemporaneousness. The student output of the universities varied in contemporaneousness from one school to another, ranging upward to r = 0.98 (10 categories). The overall correlation between the student and the journal outputs was r = 0.79.
A computerized search was performed, and a bibliography was prepared on the subject of biofeedback covering the years from 1964 to 1985. Growth curves were produced for various publication media. The search produced references to 2,431 journal articles, 102 books, 79 popular magazine articles, and 551 doctoral dissertations. The journal articles were sorted according to the country of publication, language, and primary topic of the journal. Citations were found from 35 countries, written in 18 languages. All the media studied showed a period of rapid growth during the early to middle 1970s, but there was a tendency for leveling off or slight decline during the early 1980s. Publication of articles in medical journals has shown the greatest growth, and more articles are published yearly in medical journals than in journals of any other discipline or all specialty journals combined. Publication in psychological journals has shown a decline since 1977. Dental, nursing, and educational journals have shown a low rate of publication of biofeedback articles, indicating little or no growth.
Based on the importance of document files and first-hand bibliographic sources for studying the history, we have recently investigated the chapter of Doctoral Thesis and Reports on anesthetic topics since we believe that these are fundamental to gain insight into the knowledge of our history. This investigation was planned to find such documents by reviewing the data of several Spanish archives and libraries. We collected 80 works: 14 Reports and 66 Doctoral Theses performed during a period of 95 years (heuristic limits 1847-1942). These papers were classified in several subgroups according to the subjects they deal with: 21 works on inhalation anesthesia, 7 on intravenous general anesthesia, 20 on spinal anesthesia, 10 on locoregional, 7 on anesthesia and metabolism, 12 on obstetric anesthesia, and 3 works on varied anesthesia issues. Analysis of these documents revealed that the authors (physicians and Spanish medical corporations) undertook an accurate consideration of the more relevant scientific subjects at the time of their investigation. We conclude that the works analyzed in the present study represented the beginning of the Spanish investigation on anesthesia. Further investigations may contribute to enrich our historiography.
Compared clinical psychologists (N = 270) with high and low publication rates through questionnaire responses. Highs report dissertation experiences more positively influenced their research motivation. Although the most influential professor in both groups was typically clinical, more highs found the professor emphasized another orientation, particularly empirical research, over clinical expertise. Highs report more time available, collaboration opportunities, and organizational acceptance for their research. Both groups favor empirical methods, although highs and lows agree that a small proportion of psychological research makes a significant contribution. Individual preferences probably interact with situational characteristics, both in training and work settings, to determine research activity.

There are eight institutions offering a total of 10 masters courses in nursing in Brazil. The Nursing School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (EERP-USP) offers a doctoral course in nursing. The school has been recognized as an Investigation Reference Center for Latin America by the WHO. The purpose of the study was to determine how health education has been studied in the production of graduates at the Nursing School of Ribeirão Preto, USP. The study field consisted of 87 thesis and dissertations produced since the inception of the graduate course (1977-1987). Studies in the educational function category represented 20% (18) of the sample. Among them six studies envolved the situation of nursing student education, 10 patient/client education, and two education of the nursing staff. The results showed the learning process is not covered the learning process. The findings suggested future studies will move from the 'diagnosis' of information needs to analysis of changes.
In celebration of the centenary of August Müller's pioneering work on contact lenses, we present, for the first time, a full translation into English of Part III of his inaugural dissertation. Müller describes his attempts to correct his own -14.00 diopters of myopia with "cornea-lenses," which were essentially glass scleral lenses. His inability to tolerate lens wear for more than half an hour was probably due to a) limbal pressure as a result of the primary optic diameter being too small, and b) the use of water to occupy the space between the lens and cornea, which would have induced severe corneal edema. Many of the observations and recommendations embodied in Müller's thesis, such as the importance of a good fit, adequate tear flow and rounded edges, are still relevant to contact lens practice today.
The International Union of Immunological Societies, recognizing the need for internationally acceptable standards for the PhD degree in immunology, commissioned the IUIS Education Committee to prepare recommendations on the subject. This document, the result of a two-year study of PhD programs in many countries, presents these recommendations.

To succeed in academia, nursing faculty members must devote the first 5 years following the dissertation to achieving a standard to tenure characteristic of the profession. Most institutions in the country adhere to the American Association of University Professors' guidelines for tenure. These guidelines mandate excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. A fourth characteristic, leadership, is increasingly considered in tenure decisions. The expectations of an academic career in nursing serve as the foundation for a framework to evaluate the likelihood of success in a particular setting. A detailed 5-year plan for achieving tenure is proposed.
Progress in the discipline of nursing is predicated on the development of a community of scholars who have passion for substance. Nurse educators are challenged to develop programs and environments that stimulate and nurture scholarship. However, doctoral education that enhances scholarship encompasses more than coursework. Strategies for the development of scholarly doctoral education are discussed in this article.

Studies involving personality and situational variables were surveyed. Studies permitting determination of main effects and interactions involving these variables have increased since 1950. In one comparison, situational main effects were significant in 65.5% of the cases, whereas the figure was 31% for individual difference variables and 59.9% for interactions. In another comparison, 35% of situational main effects accounted for more than 10% of the variance, compared with 29% for personality indexes; 19% of the situational variable effects accounted for more than 20% of the variance, compared with 14% of the personality main effects. Low percentages of variance were accounted for by all variables investigated: situational, personality, demographic, and interactions among these variables.
