Need for reform in health professions accrediting.

At least 50 vocational or professional groups, exclusive of specialties within categories, now provide a health service. Many have established accrediting procedures for maintaining educational standards, and the number is increasing. So great is the demand from the accrediting bodies that universities and academic health centers find that the cost in terms of money, time, and duplication of effort has become exhorbitant, and thereby a major problem in the management of educational institutions. The duplication of effort leads to fragmentation of the entire accrediting process, and this, in turn, fosters inadequate sharing of health professions educational experiences. A model is presented that would lessen the burden of accrediting on educational institutions and simultaneously permit testing of the feasibility of a multiprofessional accrediting mechanism.

Occupational Health/Safety Program Accreditation Commission.

This presents a brief history of programs for accrediting occupational health activities with discussion of weaknesses and strengths. The relatively short life of the Occupational Health/Safety Program Accreditation Commission is reviewed with emphasis on its charge, goals and accomplishments. The mechanisms for accreditating Occupational Health and Safety Programs is described and some reasons for seeking accreditation are given.

Safety and environmental factors in accreditation of facilities.

The standards developed in 1972 by the Accreditation Council for Psychiatric Facilities of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals cover 28 components of mental health programs, including the environment and patient safety. The author discusses the standards related to those two areas as they are set forth in the council's Accreditation Manual for Psychiatric Facilities, and he describes the difficulties psychiatric hospitals have faced in complying with them.

Critical issues in the JCAH accreditation program for community mental health services.

Since its introduction in 1976, the accreditation program for community mental health centers and services has been the focus of considerable comment, both positive and negative. Much of the criticism of the program derives from its theoretical framework, the Balanced Service System, with its unfamiliar service structure and terminology. The author, who played a leading role in developing the accreditation program, discusses the major concerns of the critics and the program revisions that have been made to deal with them while retaining the benefits of the BSS model. He emphasizes the importance of the model in providing a way to uniformly review the widely varying program and administrative configurations that operate as community mental health service programs.

Community mental health accreditation: a pilot study.

The Balanced Services System is the conceptual framework for the newly initiated community mental health accreditation program sponsored by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH). The program design and performance of CMH systems are reviewed and judged according to a series of evaluation criteria that prescribe the desired operating state for each functional area in the center.

Accreditation of occupational health programs: development and validation of criteria.

Defined standards and a mechanism for evaluation of performance can help promote new and improve existing occupational health programs. Criteria must be based on sound principles, be comprehensive, discriminating and attainable. They should apply to small and large establishments with varying hazards. A successful program requires a multi-disciplinary effort involving physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, health physicists, safety professionals, managers, technicians and labor. Assessment by on-site peer review is necessary. The criteria and process for their use must be accepted by the professions, labor and management. The Occupational Health/Safety Programs Accreditation Commission plans to use the document entitled Standards, Interpretations and Audit Criteria for Performance of Occupational Health Programs in its accreditation activities. The development and validation of this document and its use are described.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals--twenty-five years of promoting improved health care services.

A brief history of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH), as well as its structure, purpose and activities, is presented. The procedure for developing JCAH standards for health care facilities is discussed. Also presented are the survey and accreditation processes. It is concluded that as long as the United States values its tradition of voluntarism and believes in positive motivation, the JCAH will be an effective influence on improved health care services.

A serological survey of accredited breeding colonies in the United Kingdom for common rodent viruses.

This paper reports the results of a general survey, the first in the United Kingdom, carried out on accredited breeding colonies of mice, rats and guinea-pigs over a period of a year. While the results show the potential usefulness of a viral accreditation grading scheme, they also show that contamination of breeding colonies with inapparent viral infections is widespread. This situation can only be improved by the continuous monitoring of animal stocks for rodent viruses, with the aim of improving the standard of animals available for research and for pharmacological, toxicological and routine diagnostic procedures.
