The H-2 A Temporary Agricultural Workers Program, which supplies seasonal labor essential to U.S. food security, has grown over 230% in the past decade but is excluded from the National Agricultural Workers Survey. Although safety training is federally mandated and H-2 A workers are eligible for Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace coverage, compliance and healthcare access among these workers remain poorly documented. The aim of this pilot study was to assess workplace safety training, heat acclimatization practices, health insurance awareness and enrollment, and healthcare utilization among H-2 A workers in Georgia. In summer 2024, bilingual research assistants orally administered a cross-sectional Spanish-language survey to 51 H-2 A workers at a South Georgia laundromat, in partnership with the Latino Community Fund Georgia. The survey assessed demographics, occupational characteristics, safety training, heat acclimatization, health insurance awareness and enrollment, and healthcare utilization. Findings are self-reported. Among participants, 41% reported not receiving federally mandated pesticide safety training, and 59% received heat illness prevention training. Heat acclimatization was inadequate for 53% (29% received none). Additionally, 53% did not know the nearest hospital, 43% reported having health insurance, and 25% were unsure of their health insurance status. Overall, 71% had never visited a doctor's office, and of 22 insured workers, only 1 (2%) had used benefits this season. Substantial gaps in workplace safety training, heat acclimatization, and healthcare access were observed in this pilot study, consistent with prior evidence of persistent disparities in this population. Community-based outreach, bilingual health navigation, and market-based labor accountability models warrant further investigation to improve protections for H-2 A workers.
The energy cost of agricultural and standard activities and the daily energy expenditure of male agricultural workers were measured during different seasons in Iranian villages to assess the validity of past and present Food and Agricultural Organization recommended energy allowances for that population. Studies included low income farmers in a village representative of those around the central desert where harvesting takes place under conditions of extreme summer heat. Measurements were also made during the Moslem fasting period when no food may be eaten between dawn and dusk. Energy cost of typical activities was measured by indirect calorimetry using the Max-Planck respirometer and daily energy expenditure was assessed using these figures combined with a diary of activities throughout the 24-hr period. Results of individual activity values are compared with other published figures. Comparison of daily energy expenditure of fasting subjects and nonfasting after Ramazan showed no significant difference. No significant difference was found between values of standardized activities at high summer temperatures and moderate temperatures. Mean values of daily energy expenditure during winter when activity is low are around 2600 kcal/day and for the other seasons of high activity 3400 kcal/day. These figures suggest that past and present Food and Agricultural Organization standards are low for this population.
Five-hundred-and-eighty-eight cattle and agricultural workers were surveyed. One-hundred-and-fifty of them were randomly selected, and they underwent leukograms and absolute eosinophil counts for enabling the study of their hematologic state. A 55% positivity rate was obtained among patients studied through the toxoplasmin intradermoreaction technique from Czechoslovakia. Historical and morphologic aspects, biological characteristics, evolutive cycle, pathologic characteristics, clinical manifestations, as well as the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii are reviewed.
UNLABELLED: The general state of health of native Brazilian agricultural workers - a total of 750 people from 3 different plantations in the States of Paraná and Saso Paulo - was examined. The main interest of this study war centred on infectious and parasitic diseases, nutritional conditions as well as social, intellectual factors. OBSERVATIONS: Apart from the high number of cases of helminthiasis, amounting to 80%, the general state of health of the examined subjects was found to be good - indeed better than that of a hypothetical, comparable group of Europeans. Except for the Chagas' disease, by which 5% of the test subjects were afflicted, infectious diseases posed no serious problems. There was no case of malnutrition. The relatively lower intellectual level can not be attributed to any heriditary factor, and could definitely be improved by proper schooling. Corrective measures: Chagas: Since brick houses have replaced the wooden ones for several years, new infections are unlikely. Helminthiasis: In addition to the anthelminthic treatment, sanitary prophylactic measures should be taken. Social-intellectual factors: The following points should be emphasized: elementary schooling on the plantations; teaching at intermediary level; sewing and cooking courses; general hygience.
The authors report on the frequency (as determined by the double diffusion test according to Ouchterlony) of circulating precipitating antibodies against thermophil actinomycetes of the genus Micropolyspora faeni in 1666 blood samples from 1376 agricultural workers. These workers belonged to the main professional categories in two districts of the German Democratic Republic and were examined by members of the Research Group on Occupational Medicine in Agriculture of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University during the years 1972-1975. 290 workers were examined twice or three times in a longitudinal study. Positive serological findings were obtained from 5.1% of the subjects under investigation. There were no statistically significant differences with regard to occupational category, sex, age, and season. Nevertheless, there were marked regional differences. The results obtained show that there is no need for special medical supervision of the agricultural workers with regard to thoracic actinomycosis (farmers' lung). Further examinations are of course necessary in case of suspected or clinically manifest affection.

The effect of a gluttony diet in healthy subjects was studied over an observation period of 12 months. Twenty-six agricultural workers, all of them Yemenite Jews, received a high-caloric, high-fat diet, and the changes in serum cholesterol (CH), high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and body weight were assessed. Yemenite Jews as a group are characterized by low serum CH levels and by a low incidence of coronary artery disease. For a period of 7 months the subjects received a diet of 4553 cal/day, more than double their original "Yemenite diet". After this time they resumed their customary low-caloric diet for 3 months, and thereafter for another 2 months they continued with the high-caloric food regimen. The high-caloric, high-fat diet resulted in the expected increase of serum CH. A similar increase of high-density lipoprotein-CH was found. Serum triglyceride levels changed inversely to those of CH. It is suggested that the altered relation of calories derived from carbohydrates to those derived from fats brought about the decrease of triglycerides, and this irrespective of the increased intake of carbohydrates and fats. The rather small gain of body weight over the trial period--despite the doubled caloric intake--is similar to other studies that showed that the ability of normal individuals to gain weight through overeating varies considerably.
