[Angiomyoma. A pathologo-anatomic analysis of 229 cases].

An analysis was made of 229 cases of angiomyoma retrieved from the authors' own files. Studies were aimed at histological features, morphological variability, tumour localisation as well as at distribution by sexes and age groups. The angiomyoma cases were subdivided by histological features into solid forms (18 per cent), venous forms (38 per cent), combinations (43 per cent), and cavernous variants (two cases only). That subdivision was based on variable relationships between smooth muscles, on the one hand, and vascular cavities of different shapes, on the other. Angiomyoma was found to occur in high incidence in the fourth to sixth decennium of age, with clearly recordable predilection for females, and localized in 40 per cent of all cases in the region of the lower leg. Noteworthy peculiarities included predominance of male patients with combined or mixed angiomyoma with cavernous components or with solely cavernous forms and preference of the venous subtype for the head-neck region. The morphological structure of angiomyoma is discussed in some detail and is interpreted as a correlate of an organoid mixed tumour with muscular and vascular components. It is against this background that the term of "angiomyoma" is definitely preferred to "vascular leiomyoma".

Lack of CD34 positive stromal cells within angiomyomas (vascular leiomyomas).

AIMS: To investigate the role of CD34 positive stromal cells in the morphogenesis and tumour growth regulation of angiomyomas (vascular leiomyomas). METHODS: Histochemical analysis using monoclonal antibodies to CD34 and CD31 was performed in 10 angiomyomas and their adjacent soft tissue. RESULTS: CD34 positive stromal cells were not seen within the tumour tissue; the thick walled vessels within the tumours lacked CD34 positive stromal cells. In contrast, bundles of CD34 positive stromal cells were detected at the tumour border of all of the angiomyomas and in the adventitial tissue of the surrounding normal vessels. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of CD34 positive stromal cells within an angiomyoma is associated with the characteristic morphology of an angiomyoma.

Glossal angiomyoma: imaging findings and endovascular treatment.

BACKGROUND: An angiomyoma is an uncommon, benign tumor characterized by numerous vascular channels intermixed with bundles of smooth muscle cells. Oral manifestations are quite rare. We describe for the first time the CT, MRI, and angiographic imaging features and successful preoperative endovascular embolization of an angiomyoma of the tongue. The pathologic findings before and after embolization are also described. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 25-year-old man was seen with a rapidly enlarging tongue mass. Imaging studies revealed the extent and hypervascular nature of this tumor. The diagnosis of angiomyoma was confirmed by histologic examination. Preoperative embolization proved to be helpful in the surgical management of this lesion. CONCLUSIONS: Angiomyoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any well-circumscribed, hypervascular, soft tissue tumor in the mouth. In addition, endovascular embolization may be a useful adjunct that facilitates resection.

An angiomyoma with t(X;10)(q22;q23.2).

A t(X;10)(q22;q23.2) translocation was detected as the only chromosomal aberration in primary short-term cultured cells from an angiomyoma of a 58-year-old woman; 6p, 13q, and 21q rearrangements have been previously demonstrated by others in two cases of angiomyoma. This type of translocation has not been reported in other benign tumors including leiomyomas and angiomyomas, although it has been detected in an ependymoma. This is thought to be a third case of angiomyoma showing karyotypic abnormalities.

Myxoid angiomyoma of the hard palate: a case report.

Angiomyomas are found with some frequency in the female genital tract. They can also appear in both sexes in the gastrointestinal tract and in the skin. The oral cavity is an unusual site for an angiomyoma. In this article, we describe the case of a 74-year-old woman who came to us with a nodule at the palatal midline. Following surgical excision of the growth and stent placement over the wound site, a biopsy analysis was performed. Histology of the removed tissue revealed an unusual variant of an angiomyoma: a myxoid angiomyoma.

Angiomyoma of the mandible: a case report.

A rare case of intrabony angiomyoma affecting the mandible is presented. The patient was 25 years old male who complained of swelling and pain in the posterior segment of his lower jaw. Histopathologically diagnosed angiomyoma is discussed with emphasis on the pathogenesis in the present case. Literature concerning the lesion is reviewed. In the present paper we report a case of angiomyoma affecting the mandible. Angiomyomas are also known as vascular leiomyomas which commonly occur in the wrist and ankle region. They are painful tumours as was also evident in our case. These tumours are characterized histopathologically by convuluted thick walled vessels associated with bundles of well differentiated smooth muscle elements. They rarely affect the oral cavity. Therefore our case is one of the few cases affecting the oral cavity as reported earlier. Tumours of the smooth muscle cells which form involuntary muscle are known as leiomyomas. These commonly affect the alimentary tract. They are rarely found to affect the oral cavity.

[Angiomyoma of the retropharyngeal space].

We report the case of a 65-year-old male patient with an angiomyoma of the retropharyngeal space. Angiomyoma is a tumour that arises from the smooth muscle in the wall of blood vessels. It is a relatively rare tumour of the head and neck, mostly in deep locations. This one is the second reported angiomyoma of the retropharyngeal space. Although image examinations and fine needle aspiration (FNA) did point to a vascular tumour, the diagnosis of this lesion is made by on excisional biopsy and histological staining with vimentin, desmin, actin or myosin. The treatment is excision of the tumour and recurrence is exceptional.

Hepatic angiomyoma: CT and MRI findings.

Angiomyoma is a benign tumor that arises from soft muscular tissue within the blood vessel wall. This lesion has been found in different organs. The preferential location of these tumors is the lower extremity. We describe the rare case of a hepatic angiomyoma and present the radiologic findings of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Angiomyoma of the retropharyngeal space.

We encountered a 59-year-old man with angiomyoma of the retropharyngeal space. He had been referred to our hospital because of a six-month history of a sensation of a narrowed pharynx. A smooth-surfaced tumour arising from the posterior wall in the hypopharynx was observed by indirect laryngoscopy. Radiographical imaging revealed a solitary tumour with homogenous contents in the retropharyngeal space. The tumour was successfully removed via a lateral pharyngotomy approach under general anaesthesia. Histopathologically, the tumour was composed of numerous veins with thick muscular walls. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an angiomyoma arising in the retropharyngeal space.

Angiomyoma of the palate--a case report.

Leiomyomas are rare tumors of the palate amongst which angiomyomas are the commonest sub-type. Recurrence is rare and prognosis is excellent. Only a few case reports are available in literature. We report a case of angiomyoma of the palate presenting as an encapsulated swelling in the roof of the mouth.

Gaze-evoked amaurosis heralding orbital angiomyoma. Case report.

The unusual case of a patient presenting with gaze-evoked amaurosis as an early and isolated sign of orbital angiomyoma is reported. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance of the orbits need to be expeditiously performed in patients with gaze-evoked amaurosis in order to identify or rule out the possible presence of an underlying tumor.

[Angiomyoma of the hand: a post-traumatic tumor?].

A 69-year-old woman presented with a tumor of the lateral aspect of the proximal phalanx of the little finger of the right hand. The finger was injured by a ring during a handshake. Excision and histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of angio-myoma, a benign vascular tumor originating from the smooth muscle cells of arterial or venous walls. Angiomyomas belong to the family of leiomyomas and rare, small tumors (less than one centimeter), preferentially occurring in women between the ages of 40 and 60 years. They may be painful. Only one case of sarcomatous degeneration has been described in the literature. Trauma has never been previously reported as a cause of angio-myoma, but in this case the traumatic origin of the tumor was not in doubt.

Benign angiomyoma of the uterus with unusual macroscopic appearance.

Benign mixed uterine tumors are very rare. We present a case of angiomyoma of the uterus with unusual gross appearance and diffuse polypoid growth on the uterine serosal surface. We could not find a macroscopic picture like this described in the literature.

Angiomyoma of the temporal region.

A case of angiomyoma of the temporal region is presented. Judging from the number of reported cases this is an uncommon site for the tumour to occur. The clinical and histopathological features of smooth muscle tumours of the superficial tissues of the head and neck are reviewed.

Angiomyoma of the palate.

Oral tumors of smooth muscle origin are rare. Most oral leiomyomas are believed to be derived from vascular smooth muscle. The leiomyomas are divided into angiomyomas and leiomyomas depending on the degree of vascularity. Differentiation must be made from neurofibromas and other spindle cell tumors, as well as leiomyosarcomas.
