The effects of fitspiration TikTok content on body image and mood among young adult women in the U.S.

Fitspiration is an appearance-based form of media that promotes physical fitness and dieting. While not true of all fitspiration media, some forms promote these ideals through visuals of toned, athletic bodies that have become increasingly prevalent on the short-form video platform, TikTok. Although often framed as health-promoting, fitspiration exposure has been associated with upward appearance comparison (i.e., comparison with people perceived as more attractive) and negative effects on body image and mood. The present study investigated the effects of short-form video-based fitspiration on social comparison, appearance importance, appearance anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and negative affect. Using an experimental design, 150 undergraduate women (Mage = 19.28) in the United States were randomly assigned to view a five-minute TikTok compilation of either animal (n = 75) or fitspiration videos (n = 75). Participants completed baseline measures prior to viewing and state-level measures after completing their video set. Results indicated that, relative to control, viewing fitspiration content led to greater social comparison, appearance concerns, feelings of being fat, and sadness. Baseline appearance concerns and depressive symptoms significantly moderated group differences in responses, such that negative fitspiration effects on state-level appearance concerns were found among individuals high but not low in baseline appearance concerns and among individuals low but not high in baseline depressive symptoms. These findings contribute to the growing literature on fitspiration by demonstrating the immediate psychological effects of this content in short-form videos and highlighting the importance of considering individual differences in vulnerability.

[Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Histochemical observations and hormone therapy (author's transl)].

There were carried out substrate- and enzymhistochemical reactions of the typical nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in 6 cases. In the environs of the vessels there were mainly neutral mucopolysaccharides, in the left intercellular substance and in the fibroblasts and most cells acid carbohydrates were found. The protein reactions pointed out a conspicouos strong contents of alkaline proteins in fibroblasts, mast cells and vessel environs. In the mast cells and fibroblasts tryptophan was found plentifully, in fibroblasts and vessel environs a lot of tyrosin was provable. The alakline phosphatase was traceable in fibroblasts and mast cells with great intensity. Strong reactivities of the acid phosphatases in all of the cells of the tissue refer to intensive lysosomal activities and considerable secretion transactions. The reaction of LDH as a representative of energy metabolism settles down in all of the cells and vessel environs in a strong way. The histochemical examination of a preparation of the naso-pharyngeal angiofibroma after hormone therapy showed a falling out of all the enzyme activities. The reduction of the acid phosphatases seems to be of special importance. Substrathistochemically there weren't any clear modifications concerning quality and quantity. A comparatively examined separation of an ordinary fibroma of the nasopharynx indicated similar enzymhistochemical pictures disregard the intensive reaction of the unspecific esterase, which doesn't appear concerning the nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. The carbohydrate reactions demonstrated some differences to the typical nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

The value of a psychiatric service within the venereal disease clinic.

A significant proportion of attenders at venereal diseases clinics can be regarded as potential psychiatric patients. However, there have been few reports on the value of readily available psychiatric advice at such clinics. The findings during a three-month period when a psychiatrist attended a venereal disease clinic are described. Twenty-two patients were referred for psychiatric assessment. Of the 20 who kept their appointment, 18 were diagnosed as mentally ill or as having a personality disorder. Of these two were already under psychiatric care, but 11 had never previously sought psychiatric assistance. The major sources of common venereological and psychiatric concern appeared to be among the promiscuous and the hypochondriacal patients. The former consisted of persons with personality disorders who were thought unlikely to respond to psychiatric treatment; but some of the latter improved after treatment with pimozide. Some patients defaulted and not all who persevered were helped. Nevertheless the results of a questionnnaire showed that the staff considered there was an important place for a psychiatrist within their clinic.

Soft-tissue calcification in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Calcification of soft tissues is known to occur frequently in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and dermatomyositis. To our knowledge, only seven case reports have appeared concerning this abnormality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We describe four patients with well-documented SLE who developed calcification in subcutaneous tissue, muscle, or periarticular structures. The pattern and localization of the calcification can mimic those seen in other disorders.

This is the way it was in the 1970s.

Although regulatory, economic, and other concerns appear to have taken center stage in the health care field in the past decade, the real work of healing and comforting the sick goes on.

[Leiomyomatosis of the anal canal].

The solitary occurrence of a leiomyoma in the anal channel is rarely observed. Still more infrequently is the multiple appearance of such tumours in the anal channel which is to be named leiomyomatosis. On the basis of an own observation concerning the appearance of a relapsing leiomyomatosis of the anal channel in a 66-year-old woman is reported, which hitherto has not yet been described in literature. The clinical and morphological problems of this disease are discussed.

Fibrinoid necrosis and downward motion of colloid bodies in lichen planus (apoptosis).

Fibrinoid necrosis which in previous investigations was demonstrated in the epithelial cells of the skin and of the liver in certain disorders, may also appear in the colloid bodies in lichen planus. Trichrome stainings were positive for fibrinoid, staining reactions with haematoxylin variants indicated the presence of keratin and precursors, and investigations in Wood's light permitted conclusions concerning the appearance of mixed proteins, of which keratofibrinoid seems to be the most important. Circulatory disturbances are emphasized as having an important role. The colloid bodies are extruded from the epidermis, according to the observations of Kerr et al., following the rules of apoptosis.

Schizophrenics' mutual glance patterns.

The schizophrenic patient is often quite incommunicative about his current or past interpersonal relationships. Many workers feel that interviews with the schizophrenic's parents are also unreliable means of getting direct verbal information. Such pessimism is based on their experience that parents of schizophrenics often distort or delete information because of a concern with appearances, an inability to communicate adequately, or an investment in maintaining the patient status of their offspring. Difficulty in getting verbal data limits the therapist's understanding of the schizophrenic and his relationship with people. Observation of implicit communications through gestural interaction provides an important alternate means of getting information about interpersonal relationships which does not necessarily require the cooperation of the patient or his parents. As research in gestural communication improves, it should be possible to attempt a more detailed investigation of the interaction between the schizophrenic patients and others. Through the use of gestural or other implicitly communicative indices, such qualities as seductiveness, hostility, dependency, dominance, and others may ultimately prove to be measurable. Research has demonstrated that gestural behavior as a means of imlicit communication is indicative, in a gross sense, of the quality of interaction between people (Ekman, 1965; Exline and Winter, 1965). This study is concerned with mutual glances--moments in which two people look directly at each other at the same time so that their eyes meet.

EEG-responses caused by environmental noise during sleep their relationships to exogenic and endogenic influences.

At a certain level of intensity acoustical stimuli occurring during the night lead to sleep disorders. Whereas presumed after-effects (decrease of performance, functional and organic diseases) can as yet not be related to noise, it is evident that the primary effects which can be recorded immediately after stimulus onset are caused by noise. Because of the small number of experimental trials carried out in different investigations, the results of each single paper can only be tentative. Therefore--concerning awakening reactions and less than a change of at least one sleep stage--the data from publications of comparable method and evaluation have been summarised. With these data all calculations have been repeated. The results and influence of several exogenic and endogenic factos are demonstrated. Becuase of the different methods used only 10 out of 60 publications have been used. In spite of this restriction of data, at least as far as trends are concerned, they appear to be consistent; numerical results should at this stage only be regarded as tentative.

[Determination of CPK isoenzymes by column chromatography (author's transl)].

The AA. have carried out in patients affected by proved myocardial infarct, by other cardiac diseases and by muscular dystrophy the following enzymes determinations: total CPK, total LDH, SGOT, SGPT, HBDH, CPK isoenzymes by column chromatography (Mercer's method) and LDH isoenzymes either by column chromatography (Mercer's method) and by electrophoretic separation. Some results concerning the appearance of the CK-MB isoenzymes during the acute period of the myocardial infarction are described.

Pelvic endometriosis as demonstrated by gray scale ultrasound.

Six cases of pelvic endometriosis are discussed and their ultrasonic appearances presented. The literature is reviewed concerning the ultrasonic appearance of pelvic endometriosis. The clinical significance of endometriosis in the differential diagnosis of females with pelvic pain is stressed. In this series endometriosis could not be differentiated from cystic lesions of the ovaries and from pelvic inflammatory disease ultrasonically. Other confirmatory measures or studies such as laparoscopy and biopsy were usually needed.

Reflections on the current status of the national sickle cell disease program in the United States.

Some clouds of concern now appear on the horizon for the national sickle cell disease program. There is flagging general attention by the black population and a dilution of interest in and visibility of the sickle cell problem brought about by political maneuvering to bring the program under the legislative umbrella of many other genetic diseases (which occur predominantly in Caucasians). In addition, the federal program has recently phased-out six comprehensive sickle cell centers and imposed budgetary cutbacks in the remaining centers. The victims of this disease, the black population in general, and the researchers and investigators who seek ways to bring this disease under control need reassurance from the current national administration that the sickle cell program will not be permitted to die a slow death from financial attrition, attenuation of interest, and skillful neglect leading to the phasing-out of another "minority project." The national sickle cell program, in the relatively short span of six years, has made significant and notable progress not only in research endeavor but also in improved patient care and community-wide education. In this context, certainly, the positive aspects of the national sickle cell disease program continue to far outweigh any negative ones.(1)

Ultrastructure of neuromelanin granules in dog substantia nigra at different ages.

The Authors study through ultrastructural observations the sequence of processes concerning the appearance and the depositing of the neuromelanic pigment in the neurons of dog mesencephalic substantia nigra nucleus at different ages. The results are as follows: in the one year old dog, in a low percentage of lysosome-like oval organelles, few masses, strongly electron-dense, appear on the matrix. In the five year old dog, these masses are deposited and increased in quantity inside many more organelles. In the specimens extracted from older dogs, these organelles, characterized moreover by the presence of lipidic globules, merging in groups, became larger and more irregular. The Authors discuss the results obtained with the ultrastructural observation, compared with those obtained with the optical methods.
