Vision quality of elderly Oklahomans.

The purposes of this study are to determine if age related visual changes are affecting the ability of older adults to perform everyday tasks, to identify histories of eye diseases/eye surgeries, and to document eye care practices. Our sample was obtained from the Third Age Life Center at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The survey was mailed to 14,856 members; 848 (6%) surveys were returned. Over 84% of the respondents have never been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy. Sixty percent rated their health and vision quality as good. Females expressed more vision problems than males. Advanced age (75 years or older) did increase likelihood of experiencing eye diseases and vision difficulties. The majority of respondents in this study appear to be experiencing healthy vision with minimal age-related changes and have not been diagnosed with the eye diseases characteristic of this age group. Evidence of regular eye examinations was reported, with 33% of the respondents reporting having eye exams once a year and 33% twice a year.

Life stresses of the free black community as represented by the First African Baptist Church, Philadelphia, 1823-1841.

The congregation of the Reverend Henry Simmons (First African Baptist Church at 8th & Vine, Philadelphia) from 1823 to 1841 used a cemetery rediscovered through subway expansion which was carefully excavated by M. Parrington and S. Pinter in 1983-1984; currently 75 adults were available for study. As an overall health indicator, longevity at 38.9 years (N = 39) female and 44.8 (N = 36) male indicates more stress on females. Probable causes of stress are inadequate nutrition for the performance of arduous labor, pregnancy, and childrearing, unsanitary living conditions, limited exposure to sun, and extensive exposure to infectious diseases. Nutritional indicators of stature, dental lesions, skull base height, and pelvic brim index scarcely advance over 1790-1820 Catoctin Furnace, Maryland, slaves' indicators. Disease evidence includes limb-distorting rickets in one child who died at age 8, anemia, and arthritis; but the incidence of arthritis was less than at Catoctin. Genetic traits are chiefly African. Family links show in details: os acromiale in about 30%. This plus less violence (fewer fractures) suggests community strength developing.

What shall we do with Norman? An experiment in communal discernment.

We were a group of Christian friends searching for affirmations that lay at the heart of our faith and reached to the limits of our existence and moral authority. As we have reflected on our role in deciding whether and to what extent we could assist in allowing our terminally ill friend, seventy-nine-year-old, Norman to die, we were deeply troubled by the moral ambiguity of our involvement. Through a careful process of authority through communal discernment, our responsibility for Norman became clear: we were to assist him in living the life he embraced in baptism -- a life which included a destiny that was conformed to the crucified and risen one. That was not the destiny we chose for Norman; it was the destiny he owned. We recognized with Norman that our lives are not our own to be guided by autonomy and liberty, but rather to be lived for the glory of Jesus the Christ.

Extensive and differential platinum chemotherapy mutagenesis in livers of children.

Childhood cancer survivors often experience late adverse effects that may be linked to chemotherapy mutagenesis. We studied chemotherapy mutagenesis in normal pediatric tissues using duplex sequencing (NanoSeq) to enable the detection of mutations from single DNA molecules. We found that platinum chemotherapeutics increased the mutation burdens of normal pediatric tissues to levels seen in adults. In the liver, platinum agents imparted a tissue-specific mutational signature that was absent from other tissues. Gene-focused duplex sequencing revealed that chemotherapy mutagenesis generates a great diversity of nonsynonymous variants, some of which may have functional potential, such as leukemogenic variants in blood. Our findings demonstrate extensive chemotherapy mutagenesis in normal tissues of children, which may provide a plausible link between chemotherapy exposure and adverse effects in later life.

[Anemia in cancer patients before treatment].

Thirty per cent of cancer patients suffer from anemia before any treatment. This anemia is caused by haematopoiesis troubles related to cytokines production and by endogenous erythropoietin deficiency. Clinically, its symptoms, including fatigue, spoils patients'quality of life. Known as a prognostic factor for several cancers, anemia also lowers radiotherapy or chemotherapy efficiency by tumor hypoxia. Recombinant EPO restores normal haemoglobin level, quality of life and treatment efficiency.

Johann Baptist von Schweitzer: the queer Marx loved to hate.

Despite his conviction on a morals charge involving a boy, the early German Social Democrat Johann Baptist von Schweitzer went on to have a successful political career. His life furnishes the context to present remarks by his political opponents Marx and Engels, which reveal their deep-seated homophobia. It is pointed out that this has been glossed over by the translations of the recently published Marx/Engels Collected Works. Some remarks on boy-love and anarchism are appended.

Religious sentiment in church affiliates and nonaffiliates.

The Religious Life Inventory was administered to 454 college students, members of one of three religious denominations (Catholic, Methodist, Baptist) or a member of no church (nonaffiliate). An evaluation of the four groups on 3 scales showed nonaffiliates scored less external in religious sentiment than affiliates, Baptists scored higher on internal religious sentiment than nonaffiliates, and no differences among groups were found for interactional religious sentiment.

Simulated livestock dynamics--effects of pastoral offtake practices and drift on cattle wealth.

Pastoral cattle herds were simulated to demonstrate a species-independent package (DADAS) for the analysis and simulation of livestock dynamics. A cow culling age of 11 years was expected to maximise offtake rate and to stabilise the cattle population. This threshold was derived by the deterministic module of the package used. A closer look at six offtake patterns using the stochastic module of the simulation program revealed that those who cull cows at an age limit would fare less well than those who cull cows only when sterile. Within each offtake pattern the cumulative effects of chance fluctuations in sex-ratio of calves, mortality, sterility, age at first calving and calving interval resulted in cattle wealth indicators varying widely between replicate herds. The example shows that livestock dynamics simulation on personal computers is feasible for planning, teaching and research purposes.

The symbolism of salt in paintings.

Many artists have used the symbol of salt in both religious and profane works, yet very few studies have explored the symbolism of salt as used in works of art. In this study, Panofsky's method has been adopted to evaluate works of art through an organic process articulated into three stages: (1) pre-iconographic, (2) iconographic and (3) iconological. The method was used for (a) religious paintings of the Old and New Testaments and (b) mythological and profane themes. Various salt-cellars were also studied. In particular, the paper examines the following themes: Isaac blessing Jacob, the return of Esau, Samuel consecrating David, the Last Supper, the suppers at Emmaus and at the house of Simon, the birth of St. John the Baptist, the Baptism of Constantine, the prodigal son, Bacchus-Apollo, the nuptial banquet of Love and Psyche, the death of the Cavalier of Celano, the king drinks, the landlord's visit, 'Phitopolis faisant servir des mets en or au roi Pithès', certain still life paintings and various salt-cellars including those of Cellini and Giulio Romano. The paper discusses the works of many artists including Raphael, Leonardo and his school (Boltraffio, Giampietrino, d'Oggiono, Solario), Hendricksz, Corenzio, Jean-Baptiste and Philippe de Champaigne, Damaskinos, Tintoretto, Titian, Romanino, Rubens, Bellini, Bloemaert, Veronese, Sustris, Just of Ghent, Jan Van Hemessen, Poussin, Loir, Giotto, Jordaens, Brueghel and Mimmo Paladino with his enchanted mountain. From the data examined it emerged that salt is a primary iconological presence in various works of art.

Psychotherapy with gay/lesbian couples and their children in "stepfamilies": a challenge for marriage and family therapists.

As increasing numbers of gay/lesbian parents and their children enter into "stepfamily-like" relationships with a gay partner, they are beginning to seek therapy for difficulties peculiar to stepfamily living involving two same-sex partners. This paper focuses on the difficulties experienced by gay parents and children in a step-relationship, and seeks to sensitize mental health professionals to issues specific to intervention with such families. Effective therapy with these families requires that therapists be sensitive to their personal biases and prejudices with regard to gay men and women in general and as parents, and be aware that such attitudes can intrude and negatively affect the therapeutic process and its outcomes. Guidelines for therapy are offered.
