Developmental aspects of aging in women. A comparative study of dreams.

Changes with age in the nature of women's inner experience were investigated through a comparison of the manifest dreams of a group of older women (ages 40 to 85 years) with the dreams from two groups of younger women (ages 18 to 26 and 16 to 17 years). The major comparative findings include a narrowing down of internal personal investments, a decrease in concerns about aggression, a decrease in the dreamer's sense of herself as pivotal, and, strikingly, an augmented amount of internally represented robust and locomotor activity for the older women. These results seem to correspond with other reports in the literature on the experience of aging women.

The relationship between contraceptives, sexual practices, and cervical human papillomavirus infection among a college population.

Four hundred and sixty-five college women were evaluated to determine if specific variables of social and sexual behavior correlated with the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in the genital tract, and if these associations differed between women who were HPV DNA positive, HPV DNA positive/clinically (cytologically) negative, or who reported previous HPV-related disease by a history of an abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) smear or genital warts. HPV positive women had more sexual partners in the recent past, more sexual episodes per month, and used spermacides less commonly than controls. Similarly, self-reporters were more likely to have more lifetime sexual partners and earlier age of onset for sexual activity. Cytologically negative HPV positive women were distinguished only by more sexual episodes per month and sexual partners in the past year (borderline significance). Alcohol use was significantly more frequent in all groups, underscoring this variable as a risk factor for both HPV DNA positivity and related disease in young women. Potential explanations for differences between women with clinically and non-clinically related HPV positivity are discussed, with emphasis on the need for followup studies to determine if an epidemiologically distinct subset of HPV DNA positive but clinically negative women are at risk for subsequent cervical disease.

Personality characteristics of men with liberal sex-role attitudes.

The present study was conducted to provide some initial information on the personality attributes of men oriented toward liberal sex-role views. Fifty-one male college students were given the Attitudes Toward Women Scale and divided into conservative, moderate, and liberal groups. Personality differences among the groups were assessed by comparing scores on nine scales from the Adjective Check List. Findings for liberal men were found to parallel results reported for liberal women on some personality dimensions and complement them on others. As with liberal women, liberal men were found to be more spontaneous, action oriented, risk taking, individualistic, and unconventional than the other male groups. There were also some indications of less self-control. Sex-role attitudes and heterosexuality were curvillinearly related. In direct opposition to results for liberal women, male liberals evidenced the least need for achievement and dominance.

Sexual behavior and guilt among women: a cross-generational comparison.

This paper reports the results of a study of the relationship between guilt and sexual behavior among 45 married women. The age breakdown of the subjects included 60 and above, 40 to 50, and 20 to 30, with 15 women included in each age category. A negative relationship was found between the age of subjects and the extent of sexual behavior while a positive relationship existed between age and sexual guilt. The younger women's sexual behavior scores were higher than both the middle and older (statistically significant) women. Scores indicated less guilt associated with sexual behavior for the younger women than for the middle-aged and older (statistically significant) women.

Discrepancies between men and women in reporting number of sexual partners: a summary from four countries.

Men and women in national surveys from four countries, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Norway, give mutually inconsistent reports of numbers of opposite-gender sexual partners. In all cases the number of female partners reported by men exceeds the number of male partners reported by women. Gender difference in reporting bias seems to be the most plausible explanation for the discrepancies.

Sexual behaviour in Zulu men and women with genital ulcer disease.

OBJECTIVE--To investigate patterns of sexual behaviour in men and women with genital ulcer disease (GUD) and their relevance to HIV-1 transmission. METHODS--A sexual behaviour questionnaire was administered by the same interviewer to all participants who were also entered into a study of the microbial aetiology of GUD. SETTING--City Health Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa. PARTICIPANTS--100 Zulu men and 100 Zulu women. RESULTS--36 (%) of men and 36 (%) of women had continued with sexual intercourse despite GUD. Patients with donovanosis and secondary syphilis were more likely than those with other causes of GUD to have intercourse despite ulcers. During swab collection bleeding was observed from ulcers in 59 women and 26 men. Prostitutes were not identified and were rarely named as source contacts. Men had more sexual partners (190) than women (122) during the previous three months. Condom use was minimal. Men who migrated between urban and rural areas appeared to have the most sexual partners. Urban women had more partners than women from rural areas. CONCLUSIONS--Men and women with GUD are practising riskful sexual behaviour and could benefit from behaviour modification programmes. In this community men who travel between urban and rural areas and who present late with GUD that bleeds easily are probably the most important high-frequency HIV transmitter core group. A significant potential risk of blood to blood contact during sexual intercourse exists in patients with GUD.

Overview: research on the psychology of women. I. Gender differences and sexual and reproductive life.

There has been a recent and rapid increase in research literature pertaining to women; this revolution in women's studies may be currently unequaled in any other field related to psychiatry. In this first part of a two-part article the author briefly discusses the social and intellectual contexts of research in this area. She reviews recent research on gender differences in behavior and on women's sexual and reproductive lives, including various aspects of the menstrual cycle, menopause, diseases of the reproductive organs, coitus, rape, childbirth, lactation, and fertility control. The second part will cover research on women in families, communities, work, and psychotherapy; and it will attempt to assess limitations of present knowledge and the anticipated directions and impact of future research.

The women's liberation movement: its impact on marriage.

The author discusses marriages in which a basically insecure husband plays a god-like role and his wife, who initially worshipped him, matures and finds her situation depressing and degrading. With support from the women's liberation movement, many women have found the courage and conviction to challenge such situations. The challenges often bring the husbands' repressed feelings of inadequacy to the surface, which leads to increased turmoil and finally to requests for professional help, first by the wife and later by her husband. During counseling both become more open and develop as individuals. As a result their marriage improves.

Correlates of females' sexual fantasies.

The intent of the study was to obtain data on the incidence of female sexual fantasy and on the relationship of background, personality, and attitudinal factors to the quantity of sexual fantasies. The participants were 102 university women students between the ages of 19 and 45 yr. An original Female Sexual Fantasy Questionnaire, a short form of the Attitude Toward Women Scale, the 16 PF, and the background variables of age, sexual experience, marital status, and religion provided data for the analysis. Conclusions were that 99% of the women engaged in sexual fantasy at least occasionally and that age, sexual experience, anxiety, independence, and liberal attitudes toward women are all related to frequency of sexual fantasy.

[Women: psychopathology and cultural malaise].

An account of the incidence of mental health and disease criteria in feminine psychopathology is presented as well as a consideration on the increasing medicalization and psychiatrization of women's demand for sanitary help. Symptoms should not be understood separately from the discontent relevant to the place femininity is given in society--hence women's subjective suffering. Observes Freud that, as a child bearer, a woman is more involved with sexual functions--thus placing her at the pulsional pole of culture which reduces a propitiatory space for sublimation processes. Correlatively, Freud sees women as victims of the worst social repression process: women being forbidden to think. Even though discontent, and psychic pain cannot be avoided inasmuch as civilization imposes certain restrictions necessarily, there is, however, an excess of pain related to the feminine position. No cure will be possible if women fail to restore their own place as subjects of their own desire, whose alienation is shown through symptoms.
