TALON--the first five years.

The South Central Regional Medical Library Program, Region IX in the national network of medical libraries, was one of the last to be organized and funded. The particular makeup of this organization has permitted a good deal of flexibility in the identification and implementation of various types of network services and activities. The following is a brief account of some of these network functions during the first five years relating the successes and failures in network strategies and describing the further evolution of programs and refinement of a regional plan which will advance network services.

Audiovisual materials: a survey of bibliographic controls in distributors' catalogs.

The current pattern of bibliographic control in audio-visual distributors' catalogs is described. Eight bibliographic control elements are defined, and the criteria for evaluating the occurrence of these elements in sixty-four sample catalogs are specified. When the distributors are grouped according to category, such as educational or commercial, the pattern of bibliographic control has three distinct clusters of elements. When the distributors are grouped by the number of titles handled, there is no clear pattern. The implications of these patterns are discussed in terms of practical library reference services. A solution to the problem of bibliographic control of health science audiovisual materials is proposed.

Completeness of catalogs of autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and X-linked phenotypes.

The completeness of McKusick's catalogs of Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM) as to the number of phenotypes included was studied by estimating the degree of concordance with the Dutch Gene Catalog of the Department of Medical Genetics of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. On a total of 355 Mendelian phenotypes described in persons living in The Netherlands or originating from this country, there were nine disease entities which were not present in MIM. As judged from this comparison MIM attains 97.5% completeness (95% CI: 95.3-98.7%). Similar comparisons with data from other countries are needed before a final conclusion can be reached. Corresponding contributors in different countries or linguistic areas might further improve MIM's completeness.

An online tests catalog for clinical laboratories.

An attempt to integrate an online catalog for clinical laboratory tests in a university hospital medical computing environment is presented here. The need for such a catalog is evident, due to the dynamic changes in the area, new tests, and new test methods. Physicians are able to access the catalog through department terminals. The catalog has been designed and implemented as a relational database, including seven tables. Context-sensitive help screens are available at any step, as well as specific instructions for each laboratory.

A list of nuclear medicine radionuclides and potential contaminants for operators of in-vivo counters.

Operators of in-vivo counters often encounter unusual photopeaks, some of which may be attributed to nuclear medicine radiopharmaceuticals recently received by the subject. This article lists the most common radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine, their common uses, their half-lives and principal decay energies, and the half-lives and decay energies of any contaminants or daughter products they may contain. The purpose is to help the in-vivo counter operator track down and eliminate causes of such unusual photopeaks.
